This method is applied to a dull edge due to the thick edge spine just behind the apex. 3V Bravo1 and 3V Gunny have a fat bevel geometry and won't take this method. They will need aggressive regrinding from a high line if you need a sharper edge on them.

I just got the bark river Aurora and am not very impressed with it. The quality of the blade geometry is very sloppy and unfinished. The straight part is uneven when you place the edge 90° to a flat surface you can see wavy light shining through. The straight edge portion has a geometry of 28° and the belly is 35° or more. I wasted a few days going from stroping to lower and lower grit stones trying to sharpen a brand new out of the box never used Aurora. Finally I saw this video and had already scratched up the new blade so I went ahead and did a full sharpening and re-grinding of the blade geometry. It worked! Thank you so much for your tutorial it helped me alot and finally i feel better about my purchase. Still, my Fallknivens A1X and S1X with their thicker blades(7mm and 6mm respectively) was perfectly contoured edges. In fact a brief stroping of the Xs and it is crazy sharp. I wanted a Bravo 1.25 in CPM-3V, not so sure now.

Dear Wakosan, How can I express the joy that I get from watching your videos! I have been hand sharpening for 40 years, yet I feel like I have so much more to learn. I am not complaining, in fact I love to learn new techniques and method, because it is about being at one with the steel, and when one realizes this, you become more natural at it. Thank you for your valuable time and devotion to the community, we can't thank you enough! Loved this latest video, thank you, and please, please, plea

I had docked my car in the ISUZU factory 3 days before it broke since the gear hadn't bitten sometimes. The repairman there had said the gearbox was partially broken but would work for a while. And after the accident the owner of the local repair garage drained the oil out of the gearbox and found many metal particles came out with the oil, and said that total replacement of the gearbox would be needed. Thanks.

Good video. 3v still kicks my butt trying to sharpen. This video would be great with a voice dubb over with Bravia or butthead. I’m not making fun it just popped in my head as I was having a little difficulty understanding with his accent and I got a laugh thinking of Beavis and butthead doing this video. As for sharpening hats off to you on a stellar job !!! Thanks

I have a few experiences on Hitachi steels. Hitachi white paper steel is similar to O1 and needs a large angle not to take edge problems. The super blue paper steel is very hard but sometimes takes chippy damages. The regular blue paper steel is well balanced like A2. All of Hitachi carbon steels are very easy to rust. Thanks.

Sandpapers do the same as Chosera stones. Sandpapers are easy to carry but make metal dust. I can use my both hands completely on the stones while sandpapers usually allow me to use only my right hand. To stabilize the sharpening angle waterstones have an advantage. In Scandi sharpening sandpapers are prone to making the bevel convex and the edge angle goes larger. Thanks.

I ever used Bark River green compound. It didn't make the edge any sharper after the black compound and I discarded it. Instead I took Bark River white compound which made the edge twice or more sharper. Thanks.

Less expensive stones comprise soft abrasive particles and cut slow. Expensive stones comprise hard abrasive particles like gem stones and cut fast. I only use Chosera stones which are expensive. You can get them from EdenWebshops in the UK. 3 stones of 400/800/2000 will be necessary to accomplish our sharpening. 600/2000 pair can do. But I like the sharpening feel of Chosera #800 stone very much. Thanks.

Dramatic difference! great work! My A2 is in the mail now. Is green compound not so good for it? I see you never use green compound but I don't know the differences. Maybe a video explaining?

That is the problem with 3V , it is difficult to sharpen in the field. Who wants to carry sandpaper or water stones or mouse pads and strops in the field. Not Me, I like AEB-L stainless steel , it holds a edge like 3V but it sharpens with ease , the best stainless steel I have used on a knife. Sharpens easy on a ceramic rod or DMT Diafold diamond pocket sharpener or similar pocket sharpeners. The problem with Bark river knives they are all Convex grinds, they should make knives in flat grinds , Saber grinds and true Scandi grinds like LT Wright knives . That is why I stay away from Bark river knives , I only own one a Bird and trout knife but that is it . My main field knives I trust are LT Wright for all purpose use.

Hi Master! I have serious problems getting my Aurora 3V sharp. Near the handle it shaves but near the tip it is just barely cutting paper. I have no chance with the black compound to get it any sharper - what do you suggest? I afraid scratching that beautiful blade when using sandpaper to grind it down a bit. Did you experience every BRK to have such bad geometry? Greetings, I'd appreciate a little hint or something... freaking out here.. won*t get sharp...

Which sand papers would you recommend to buy. 400, 800, 2000, 4000? I am currently using black, green and white compound to sharpen on leather. Is this enough?

Hello Wako, I like very much all your videos and I admire you especially for your knife knowledge and collection. I used to sharpen my knives with Gatco sharpening system. However I recently decided to start stropping my hunting knives with water sharpening stones.Could you please inform me what brand of sharpening stones is the best and what grades of roughness should I select ? Could you also tell me some web sites where I can buy good valued sharpening stones ? Thank you in advance. Sakis

I get all of my Chosera stones from a Japanese website. Its price is about 2/3 of American prices. Chosera is made in Japan. DMT Diamond stones are twice as pricey as in the US. Thanks.

If your knife has a micro bevel, it won't get sharp by stropping.

The edge angle close to the tip on the belly gets larger than on the straight portion in general. This thing happens more typically on narrower blades. If the angle on the tip side is as small as on the straight portion, the tip will go weak and can chip off even during regular use. 3V BR knives sometimes have a micro bevel. If your knife has it, it is getting larger to the tip in general. If so, you cannot get it sharp unless you get rid of it. Magnified observation is needed at first. Thanks.
