Barking MEC U-Boats U18B 404,U23B 281,U18B 400 in Southern NH 08/03/1990

CRANK UP THE VOLUME! A Maine Central U-boat lash-up (U18B 404, U23B 281, U18B 400 in Harvest Gold!) takes SENE east thru southern New Hampshire on 08/03/1990...those V-8 FDL's sound pretty cool. They have an 8 cylinder FDL, and yeah they sound really cool. They would shoot flames out of the stack if the throttle was advanced hard. Recently I watched a video of an ALCO C415, they were the only units built with an 8 cylinder 251 and they sound awesome too. Craig

I love that "hunting" idle starting about 1:03 or so. Somehow it almost sounds like it is snoring....fast asleep, awaiting its next assignment. I think I could listen to that for hours.

I agree, it is a very appealing sound. The 7fdl is very similar to the Alco 251 prime mover. The Alcos have that same "hunting" sound as you had so nicely stated.

Terrific to look back and see the U boats U18B’s after they had a few years on them. I saw them brand new in Cumberland Mills then stopped watching Trains for a few years because I got married! Those U boats didn’t last long 😓😢. Dangerous dismount and re mount during moving train! Hope he remained safe from RR injuries doing that!🙏

The Big G units are cool but you cant beat that original paint Baby Boats were unique and the coolest of U BOATS!! Another nice catch

Those U18s had an exhaust sound all their own, and somewhat sounded like the old Baldwin diesels.

Hi Craig, this is one of my favorite spots to railfan there was so much action here back then and at night one of Newfields Cops and I would watch the crew changes ! He was a big railfan and if you now Newfields ""nothing happens"" at night and very boring for the Police ! Lol I didn't make this trip with Moose but its a great time piece. I hope you put more of these out ,there is "so many" great old engines and places long gone to see !!! Thanks Craig, Ronnie Its funny to see "jointed rail" everywhere !!!!

The U18 series must have had the smallest FDL engine, they have an unique sound, I never heard before. They sound very different from the usual 12 and 16 cylinder versions. I know what the smallest baby GE's sound is like, (U10B), but they have a caterpillar engine?

They must have looked REALLY sharp in the MEC gold and green. Hate Guilford, but the paint job was tolerable, -- but nothing as compared to the schemes they replaced.

Can someone tell me why in almost all these vids they never sound their horns at crossings? That's awfully dangerous

drby0788 I hear what your saying, but at the beginning where they cross this is the small town of Newfields,NH at Swamscott St. and then turns left there on Railroad Ave. that parallels the tracks for a 1/4 mile before the siding or Rockinghan Jct. It is of the beaten path there and "everyone" on that street knows of the trains. At that time before the crossing whole freights would tie up at the siding for crew changes day and night and the freights would also switch out cars at the siding at the Jct. and at times there would be long freights backing all the way down to this crossing blocking the street a lot. I live in Exeter,NH and this is just 5 miles away and to this day I still railfan here but of course with this awful economy the (especially the last six years !!) the action isn't as heavy.
