Actually, Barney was a tragic figure: living in a room says it all. For all the mythic America Better in The Old days, the show did subtle job of hinting at the Mayberry undercurrent of issues. I saw this episode as a boy, and man, I almost cried for Barney. Ya, I loved the show (just when Barney was in it. After he left, I did not enjoy the show, and stopped watching it).
