Vettel at his peak during the peak of the 2009-13 rule set in the Red Bull RB9 a legendary combination. The RB9 was the culmination of Red Bull Racing's relentless pursuit of perfection, building on the lessons learned from the problematic RB8. While the RB8 had struggled due to controversial FIA rule changes regarding exhaust exits, the RB9 ironed out these issues and transformed into a well-balanced, high-performance machine. The architecture of the RB9 remained largely consistent with its predecessor, retaining the same high-rake concept that had become a hallmark of Red Bull's design philosophy. This high-rake setup-where the car's rear end was significantly higher than the front-was increasingly taken advantage of in the seasons leading up to 2013. It allowed Red Bull to optimize aerodynamics, particularly the flow of air under the car, generating a significant aerodynamic advantage by maximizing downforce at the rear and enhancing the car's overall stability and grip. This concept was so effective that it became a defining feature of Red Bull’s cars and continued to be a key factor in their success even in the hybrid era that followed. The RB8 had initially been designed to use ducts to recreate the exhaust-blown aero effect that had been so successful for Red Bull in previous seasons. However, after the FIA clarified the rules and deemed these ducts illegal, Red Bull shifted their approach. They introduced the Coanda-effect exhaust system on the RB8, but it didn’t work as expected at first. The system was supposed to direct exhaust gases to energize the rear brake duct winglets and diffuser sides, but early versions of the exhaust didn't deliver the desired results. It wasn’t until a significant bodywork upgrade during the 2012 European Grand Prix in Valencia, along with the addition of a resonator to the exhaust, that the Coanda effect finally started to work as intended. This upgrade allowed the exhaust gases to flow in a more efficient and controlled manner, enhancing downforce and helping the car perform better. For the RB9, Red Bull took the lessons learned from the RB8 and refined the Coanda exhaust system further. The exhaust was more effective and provided Vettel with a car that responded even better to his driving style. In addition, the sidepod undercut was intentionally profiled to mimic the effect of ducts, creating a vortex that acted as if the car still had ducts, further enhancing downforce and managing airflow in a way that gave Red Bull a significant edge. While Vettel's dominance and Red Bull's success with the RB9 were undeniable, there was an important caveat to his nine consecutive wins in 2013. After the summer break, Red Bull pushed forward with continued development of the RB9, ensuring they stayed ahead of their rivals. In contrast, Mercedes, whose W04 was on average pace the closest competitor to the RB9 that season, shifted their focus toward the development of their 2014 car, the W05, which would be built to comply with the new hybrid engine regulations. Mercedes' decision to prioritize the W05 meant that their efforts to develop the W04 plateaued, allowing Red Bull and Vettel to maintain their advantage during the latter part of the season. In Vettel’s hands, the RB9 was unstoppable. His ability to extract the maximum from the car’s unique aerodynamic features, combined with his brilliant racecraft, made for a combination that resulted in one of the most dominant periods in Formula 1 history as he won 9 races in a row.
