A fascinating peek into Barnsley’s past by the local filmmaker and historian Dave Cherry.
Eric and Pat Gillott were emptying a house, on Norcroft Avenue, in Ward Green' and stumbled upon a pile of old cine films. The lady Doris Sharp was Pat's cousin and had passed away.
They took the Standard 8 films to Dave Cherry to digitise and he has stumbled across remarkable footage of a bygone age.
There are scenes of the town centre with a series of Mayor’s parades and Worsbrough Mill before the modernisation.
With Dave, Pat and Eric do the commentary on the film.

Worsbro Common Super Stars at 30 in the film was the junior school. Remember being in the parade myself about 1984. It was something so special! The school won a first for one or two categories a lot of years.

Thanks for your kind comments Ben. I am always conscious of my speech. I used to have a terrible stammer that took years to conquer. As an old guitarist I would avoid talking on stage. I could only do it over music. Our dialect and speech pattern is Old English and rather comical. I thought I would be criticised but nobody yet seems to mind it. You stay safe in all this lot Dave Cherry

Thanks Dave for another old film that brought back memories of worsbro down the old three fields to the mill. I can remember Eric . Just think that not many of them truck firms exist anymore . That's when it was a mayor's parade. That picture of the mill was where Ashley Jackson painted one of his first pictures.

I seem to remember being told that Worsbrough was spelled Worsborough until recent times. There was an old sign just after the back of the park spelled with the extra o. I was told that the Emlmhurst who lived in the big house was an historian and had the spelling altered to reflect the pronunciation. Or have I dreamt it? Great film Dave, thanks for taking the trouble to process it.

Ah Graham that's why I said it. A lot of people put in the extra O. Did you know you have spelt Elmhirst wong? ha-it's easy done. I seem to remember studying the Civil War sieges in 1640. The place is spelt as it is now. They of course were part of the big land owning classes and were on the Royalist side. Cheers for your interest Dave.

Where the horses are is back Eldon Street, where that water wall is now and entrance to Civic Hall, which at that time would be the artists entrance aka stage door.
