Baroness - Tourniquet [Official Music Video]
Bought an artificial heart and its broken,
It never started.
Please operator take it out of here.
Don’t let it be the death of me.
It filled my bloodstream up with poison and ashes,
Now I’m starving
Don’t ever let me go my sweet amphetamine,
Holding on, all alone.
Somebody throw me a tourniquet,
I’m open-hearted.
I took a shot in the dark and I’m wasted,
Start it all again.
I tried to save myself from a heart attack,
But I had it coming.
Another shot to my cardiac did not start it up.
Wake me up on the ocean floor.
A storm’s passing overhead,
Warning me to come ashore.
In the blink of an eye,
My heart still breaks,
My blood still waits,
I’ll never sleep alone.
I’ve got an artificial heart.
It beats but I can’t feel a thing.
It’s an unofficial part.
It bleeds but I’m already gone.
Better hurry up with the tourniquet,
‘Cuz I’m open hearted.
Please operator take it out of here,
And start it up.
I’ve got an artificial heart.
It beats but I can’t feel a thing.
It’s an unofficial part,
It bleeds but I’m already gone.

I absolutely love the fact that Baroness never conforms to a typical song structure... normally you get verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus... baroness might give you a five minute intro, two lines, and a three minute outro

Same with intronaut, you’ll get a long intro, they’ll sing a few lines, they’ll play for a couple minutes with no lyrics at all, then you MIGHT get something resembles a chorus, and then another couple minutes of music with no lyrics 😂😂

This album gets a lot of flag for it's sound, but I love that they dare to add a new colour to the palette of rock sound. Some of the parts on the album sound really broken and weird, and I think that they were having fun creating those sounds. With a master like Dave Fridmann on the dials, they knew what they were doing. The rock/metal world can be a conservative space, so thanks to Baroness for stretching the boundaries. Great song btw.! :)

In b4 someone says Baroness are not metal. I can tell you, I have friends who hate metal for whom this is still too heavy lol
@DarrelDressel75
@DarrelDressel75 5 жыл бұрын
@@GrymgaRPG I'm sure as far as the Recording Academy is concerned, they're plenty metal enough to qualify. Let's not forget that Jethro Tull beat out Metallica in 1989 for pretty much the same award. Since then "metal" has sprouted so many sub-categories that most self-described metalheads can barely keep up. If it isn't pop or hip hop and has any sort of distortion, it's metal by their standards as much as it might be to the dismay of those who actually understand the genre. As much as Baroness doesn't even try to sound like much of a pure metal band, they deserve the recognition because their existing sound wouldn't be anything if they didn't start out as a status quo metal act. If your friends who hate metal think that this is too heavy, then it's metal enough for them as well as you and me and a whole bunch of other people. Sorry for the cliched semantics angle re: "metal", but the RA owes them one and this band is on a transcendent level with their current sound. It would be an injustice if this doesn't earn them that award, and I don't care that it's the middle of June because this song is, in my opinion, better than anything else that's won so far. It's unfortunate that very few people will truly appreciate this masterpiece.

One of the most beautiful examples about something so ugly, the way the lyrics describe the incident is really powerful, I've never heard a song where such thought and love was put into the structure of this song. Baroness, hope to play with y'all soon🤘

This is THE SONG of the album and of Baroness for me, and it's curious how the mixing affair it's no longer a big deal after i've listened the album. I'm mean, i didn´t even noticed while i was listening the songs. +

There's nothing wrong with the mixing. The problem is that people have been spending $10 on earbuds and have been listening to extremely poorly mixed music for years and don't understand musical texture, dynamics, etc. Grab some decent speakers, calibrate them, sit in your listening spot and do some active listening. This is the first metal album in years where it matters. We have the usage of both vertical and horizontal space in the mix here - something you only get from proper speakers. Literally grab some decent panel speakers, with a sub, or some monitors and listen to music like you're supposed to. You don't need to spend a ton of money or spend shit on tube amps or gold cables. Invest about $300-500 in to your listening. You'll find that most albums are mixed like shit without much texture, difference between the sounds, etc. Compare this album to Empath by Devin Townsend and, if you listen with shit speakers you'll find the same thing going on. Same with Jacob Collier. Essentially, anything that doesn't use the LCR style of mixing, or, uses the cookie cutter "everyone play the same exact thing" with 4 takes used left and right to get the "big" sound, EQ'ing out specific frequencies and using plugins per each frequency set to sculpt the guitar tone to make it sound big instead of just using different textures from different instruments (not just different types of guitars). Anyway, 10/10 album so far.

@UCVni25iB3r0sWBll-kZPkeg It sounds like the drums have a little tube saturation, probably emulated, on them to me. Which, yeah, adds compression. The effect is prominent on the start and end of Throw Me an Anchor. I would actually argue that it's the rhythm buss that is set with a saturation, something like Saturator X (probably something a good bit better, tbh) and then automated to increase in saturation while the master fader pulls down. It's definitely not on the master buss as there are some really pristine and clear twinkly swirly things going on at the end of the song. That saturation on stuff has been going on since Green and Yellow. Can hear it on the vocals of some songs, drums on others, definitely on the bass on the album. It was there in Purple, too, primarily on the drums and bass. Here, it's used in all sorts of really neat and creative ways that add a ton of texture to the mix. I love it.

I think there's just a lot of information, a lot of ghostly frequencies, fuzz, texture, on top of deceptively complex rhythm. It's less about the mixing and your brain needing repeated listens to put it all together

Sebastian Elm being “muddy” is a general term used for just being recorded/edited poorly. When the drummer does fills, they aren’t very audibly distinguishable, just kind of blends together as loud. Kind of blends with another loud instrument in the background and creates a type of distortion known as clipping.
@OnionKid2
@OnionKid2 5 жыл бұрын
@@monkeymefire hate to be "that guy" but muddy is a different thing. The drums are very compressed and distorted and crispy, which is kind of the opposite of muddy. Clipping is a also a different thing, it doesn't happen by mixing muddy instruments with another loud instruments in the background.
