Regarding planes - I'd go for a P Baron. As for Kim's hypoxia: I spent a 37.5 year career in critical care respiratory care and have tons of experience with O2 saturation and related issues. Here's the deal - people who don't understand oximetry tend to chase numbers and be too reliant on numbers alone. Saying that a sat of less t han 100% or 95% is dangerous simply is not true as stand-alone data. If you and I both had a saturation of 85% we'd be having this conversation. While it is true that females tend to be more sensitive to desaturation, there are other considerations. Individual's lungs have differing abilities to let gases transfer across the membranes in the alveoli - the air sacs in the lungs where actual gas exchange takes place. That's called lung diffusion capacity. Now age is a factor in diffusion capacity - the more age, and diffusion capacity decreases. But Kim is a young person. Her sensitivity to decreased O2 levels indicates to me a potential need for further investigation. Or saturation measures how well the hemoglobin in the blood is saturated with oxygen. If there is too little hemoglobin, the blood will transport less oxygen. So two things that can be checked with clinical tests are hemoglobin types and amounts, and the diffusion capacity of the lungs. There could be anemia - i.e. not as many red blood cells, and red blood cells are where the hemoglobin is. So they're essential for oxygen transport. Kim seems - at least referring to the video on Or problems - to be a bit on the hypersensitive side of things. It could be worth checking out with the doc. People who live at altitude - 5000 feet or more - have a compensation mechanism: their body produces more red blood cells. So they have a higher red blood cell count than "normal" people. That is nature's insurance that the body will ave adequate oxygen transport. So a problem with intolerance of slightly decreased levels of inhaled oxygen might indicate the need for having the body's capacity to handle oxygen gas exchange in the lungs and oxygen transport in the blood checked out. I'm not giving medical advice. Just relating experiences gained over years of work in the respiratory medicine field. I LOVE Barons - I think you would love a pressurized one.

As a P-Baron driver, it’s the way to go. It will fit in a standard t-hangar. (As you know living in Florida, hangar space is hard to come by). Flys like a King Air., AC & pressurization, and very fast…hard to beat until you move to a turbine.

I'd love to give you and Kim credit, KIm's bout with hypoxia was an eye opener, but I've learned my lesson the hard way too. I now have a demand conserver mounted in my plane and a boom canula on my headset. There are times you just end up higher than you intended or anticipated, like the ever present pop-up cumulus buildup in the afternoon in the tropical regions. It's better to be prepared and not need it than need it and not have it. Invariably I've had to ask for lower because I didn't bring my oxygen accessories, and ATC asks if I'm having problems with my pressurization. I wish I had pressurization to have problems with....

You're SO right at about 6:45 in the video. I could tell watching Kim in the video that the hypoxia had her completely confused to the point she really didn't understand what she was doing or should be doing. You're absolutely right - that 's what hypoxia does. In fact, what Kim experienced is one of the primary clinical signs of hypoxia; remember we used to have to be able to recognize those signs without pulse oximeters. You did the exact right thing - you got the O2 on her. Since it's a nasal cannula, the old adage to inhale deeply through the nose applies - that gets the lungs flushed with more oxygen quicker, and the symptoms subside. Alitude hypoxia is not something to take lightly when flying.
@wadesworld62502 жыл бұрын
While I've never experienced hypoxia, my wife had a medical condition which caused her to have extremely low hemoglobin, which I would imagine were similar effects to hypoxia. Her motor skills were affected, with her continually dropping things. She was confused on the drive to the doctor's office, asking why we were gong the wrong way when we were not. At the doctor's office she could not physically sign her name on the checkin sheet. Her signature was an illegible scribble that took up three lines on the sheet.
@billfarnham15922 жыл бұрын
@@wadesworld6250 If her hemoglobin was real low that results in hypoxia. Hypoxia is not defined by what you breathe but by oxygen in the blood and tissue. Low hemoglobin -> hypoxia. Absolutely.

You asked for ideas on a piston airplane. I used to own a Cessna 340 and it’s a great airplane, in my view. It’s cabin class, over 200 knots and up in the flight levels with pressurized comfort. No more climbing over the wing 😀
@HyperSpaceProphet2 жыл бұрын
Gotta second the 340A. Bigger cabin, no crawling over the wing, Ram engines give you 325+ HP a side, and they are easy to fly as a baron....(I learned twins on a baron 55 and find the 340 easier to fly, plus it is better on one engine). Once you own a pressurized aircraft you won't wanna go back. I get 215 KTAS for 18gph a side, so your fuel will be higher, but comparable to a PBaron with more cargo capacity. The 340 is not bad for shorter hops either compared to the 400 series or the turboprops. Plus you can go for over 4 hours with reserve, which gives you 800+ Nautical mile legs with a decent payload.
@gcaparent63092 жыл бұрын

If you want to stay with a piston twin, a late-model 58P Baron would be a natural transition and should fit the bill nicely. Assuming your mission isn't changing all that much and you just want more space and useful... I would go ahead and move to a pressurized something (helps or may even solve Kim's O2 issue). Not knowing if you're wanting to move into cabin class, I would move to the P-Baron (with winglets, just for the cool factor:))! If you're going to cabin class it up, a mint condition Duke with of course the cool factor! Cessna may be a bit cheaper in the annuals/TBO's but 30-40 GPH crosses brands either way. Never personally owned the Cessna brand though I know the 340 w/STOL is a great contender but the 414 and 421 are obviously tops in that brand. What ever you do, go FIKI! Good luck!

Another great video and explanation for hypoxia. After watching your video and a video from @socalflyingmonkey, I got a a mountain high on demand system similar to yours. My wife loves it, and I've started using it especially on long flights and at night. I feel much better when I land, and much more acute at night. As far as new twin... Isn't 310Pilot selling N771BC? It's already got a pretty sweet Avidyne setup. Just a thought.
@bootsbrigade73r2 жыл бұрын
In moving to a different plane, obviously it would need to be an upgrade. You've already done a TON of expensive work with 75W on avionics, engine monitor, and engines, so moving to another NA unpressurized light twin wouldn't make sense. It also doesn't seem like the mission is changing, so you don't just need more room or a bigger cabin. Anything bigger that isn't pressurized like a Navajo for insance, is still going to be somewhat similar in performance, so no need to go there. What would make sense would be a C340, or 58P, maybe a 414. Moving up to a 421 offers more space but again that doesn't seem to be an issue, and that step gives you the engines to consider, they're far more expensive geared 520s. Buddy of mine sucked a valve in one of his cylinders in a 414 and the engine was around $78k to overhaul. You've done your engines on 75W so you can compare that price. The biggest benefit based on just you and Kim flying most of your missions is the pressurization, which would really be the big reason to move up. An Aerostar as some have suggested could be an option too. Then you have to take into account the size of your hangar. Would a 340 with the tip tanks fit in it? A 414? Pretty sure a 58P would. Insurance will also want you to have time in whatever you buy, and you have time in a 58P, so that's a positive. The downsides to a 58P include the 10,000 hour life span of the plane, after which it's just parts, and it's somewhat of a runway hog compared to the 55. With the airplane market being what it is, you could probably get a good price for 75W, but then you have to buy another plane in this market...THEN you're starting all over with first annual to find all of the hidden gems of maintenance that haven't been fixed yet, and doing avionics upgrades if it needs that, or interior. My plane has been down for 5 months now doing the engines. People suggested I just sell it and start over, but I've done avionics, interior, engine monitor, now engines and props firewall forward. Even if I had the money to buy something pressurized, I have no desire personally to start over at the bottom of that airplane owner ladder. The Velocity might be cool, but you have to build it and that takes significant time. The Diamond twins are awesome, burn Jet-A so you don't have to deal with the leaded avgas stigma, but they're also $1.6m to buy new, and don't offer a performance increase (they're actually slower than 75W I believe.) Sorry for the long reply.
@greenthumb68752 жыл бұрын
Aerostar 702P, what do you think of those. Yeah 40 years after production but excellent service and support still available and price should be stable… non turbo priced 150,000 up to 700,000 for better than new. You had asked about a newer airplane, or maybe an older airplane. Rich, over at Flying with Rich, OCR Aviation, just posted a video on a Duke, which was brought up a number of times. Here's the link to the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpbTkmOtlLimp9k With the exception of one airplane, all the Dukes on Controller are less than $250,000. There is one that's listed at $350,000, but it has a Garmin G600 glass cockpit, and most of the Boundry Layer Research mods on it (as does the one flown by Rich). The most telling thing to me is that the Dukes have the TSIO-541 Lycoming, and if they don't have the latest version, you'll need to upgrade them. Furthermore, the Duke is the only airplane flying with these engines. They put out 380 horsepower, and at 16,000', you can probably look at 220+ knots, but Rich was saying 46-50gph. That's an awful lot of gas, and with prices at FXE of $6.76 a gallon, that would be $350/hr just in fuel costs alone! Duke, a nice airplane, but way too expensive for my blood, even if I was a millionaire (I wouldn't be one for long flying that!)

So I just looked at Controller and I was thinking maybe a B58 series Turbocharged possibly with A/C.. The other one I thought would be a Cessna 340 series...with A/C Prices close to B55 broadly speaking so selling 75 Whiskey for one of these maybe would be more practical $$ wise...far from an expert here but just thinkin...of course the throttle & prop controls on the 340 would be in the "wrong" spot...lol

IMHO Kim should make an appointment with a pulmonologist (lung dr) to check her hemoglobin and diffusion capacity.
