Citizen "Enabler" team concept...food for thought. An infantryman can fight for about an hour... (Male, 18, healthy, experience shooting/hunting) Give him a rucksack, and he can walk for about ten miles... ( Supply Guy, experience backpacking/hunting) Give him 7 extra magazines to put in his ruck, and he can fight for about 2 hours... (Ammo Guy, experience gun store) Without water, he will die in less than 3 days... (Water Purification Specialist, experience public health) Without food, he will die in about 7 days (Cook, experience preparing meals outside/food truck/trailer/grill, etc.) Give him a truck, and he can cover hundreds of miles... (Mechanic, experience field recovery and repair) Pair up a carpenter, a generator tech, and some lights, and you have a building... Add water access and EMT/doctors, and you have the beginnings of a hospital... Add a refrigerated truck, and you have the beginnings of a casualty collection point/morgue. All of these things are Combat Multipliers All of these things are available within your local communities A good commander will have to find ways to keep his highly trained soldiers focused on combat tasks by ensuring that support tasks are provided on site. So if any community is seriously considering the task of building tactical capabilities beyond those provided by local police then they need to get busy building the network of local/support skills to enable a team to operate. Becuase the truth is that while the "operators" get all the glory... none of it happens without a lot of people pulling together to make things possible. As someone that has mechanical skills, “carpentry” skills (I build my own custom snake enclosures. PVC sheets plexi glass wired up the lighting and heating myself. Someone who also understands logistics, the need not just for water but purification and sustainment. 100% agree. Guns and gear are great. But people need other skills and supplies to survive.

Thoughts on a Medical Enabler To prevent the conversation from becoming equipment focused, I’ll throw out some tools that aid in a planning process so people can develop SOPs that will dictate the equipment requirements. For those that are reading this thread, here are a couple of definitions so you can follow along. CPR = Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. BLS = Basic Life Support. ALS = Advanced Life Support. ACLS = Advanced Cardiac Life Support. ATLS = Advanced Trauma Life Support. TCCC = Tactical Combat Casualty Care. NDC = Needle Decompression. TECC = Tactical Emergency Casualty Care. PFC = Prolonged Field Care. PCC = Prolonged Casualty Care. TQ = Tourniquet. Casualty Care Continuum Definitions. These are US military definitions, but can give non military types a framework to categorize levels of care within their own group. ROLE 1 - The first medical care military personnel receive is provided at Role 1 (JP 4-02 pg II-1) ROLE 1a - Point of Need/Carried/Ruck (JTS CPG ID:91 pg 8) ROLE 1b - Mission-specific transportation/Truck (JTS CPG ID:91 pg 8) ROLE 1c - Mission support site/House (JTS CPG ID:91 pg 8) ROLE 1d - Evacuation platform/Plane (as planned or available) (JTS CPG ID:91 pg 8) ROLE 2 - Provides advanced trauma management and emergency medical treatment, including continuation of resuscitation started in ROLE 1. (JP 4-02 pg II-2) ROLE 2 LM - Light Maneuver. Light and highly mobile MTF, can set up in fixed buildings or naval platforms. Able to conduct advanced resuscitation procedures up to damage control surgery. It will evacuate post-surgical cases ROLE 2 E or ROLE 3 before evacuation to ROLE 4. (JP 4-02 pg II-2) ROLE 2 E - Enhanced. Provides basic secondary health care built around primary surgery; ICU; ward beds; limited x-ray, laboratory, and dental support; Health Service Support; and PVNTMED. Able to stabilize post-surgical cases for evacuation to ROLE 4 without the requirement to first route through a higher ROLE 3 facility. (JP 4-02 pg II-3) ROLE 3 - Theater Hospitalization. MTF staffed and equipped to provide care to all categories of patients, to include resuscitation, initial wound surgery, and postoperative treatment. Expands the support provided at ROLE 2. (JP 4-02 pg II-3) ROLE 4 - Definitive Care. US-based hospitals and robust overseas MTFs. Represents the most definitive medical care available within the medical care system. (JP 4-02 pg II-3) Threw this post on a couple of other channels, figured I would also throw it on here. It might be worth considering casualty management as a team sport vs an individual event. Yes IFAK does have “individual” in it but if we take a step back and look at a fireteam or a squad as the unit of action with a specific mission in a specific environment, the requirements, assets, and risk assessments all change. IE 10 guys with 4 tourniquets each = 40 TQs. Now, assuming you have a group that did their due diligence and has solid intel, a good plan, sound tactics 40 TQs seems like a waste of space. So maybe now each guy only carries 2 TQs and now I have more capacity for ammo, batteries, and water. Stuff that actually wins fights. The other part of this equation is the medical plan. Maybe consider the Ruck, Truck, House, Plane concept to help guide Med Ops. Ruck = what the unit of action physical has on them IE IFAKs. Truck = if mechanized transports are available, preload with more advance medical/rescue equipment. House = pre determined casualty collection point that provides security and can be stocked with more advanced medical adjuncts to keep a casualty alive for longer. Plane = whatever transport you have to move a casualty away from the fight to definitive medical care, ideally has a team to manage the casualty during the movement. This is all just a long winded way to say, the contents of your IFAK should depend on your INDIVIDUAL situation and should be accounted for in the planning process. Thoughts on active shooter medical kits. Active shooter response kits are pretty simple. First, let’s identify some differences between an active shooter incident and military/guerrilla engagement. Military/guerrilla operations complement Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and Prolonged Casualty Care (PCC) because these processes take Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) into consideration and anticipate that some wound patterns will be mitigated ie plates will reduce the number of thoracic injuries thus the predominant injuries will be on areas the plates don’t cover (limbs). This has lead military medicine to have a huge focus on TQs. Active shooters typically focus on a victim population that won’t have anything to mitigate the effects of an attack. Because of this, we won’t see the same effectiveness that TQs have with the military. Not saying TQs aren’t a net positive, but the biggest skills that don’t get enough attention in an active shooter situation are the ability to triage and casualty movement. The other hard reality of active shooter incidents is that it is a giant unknown that makes preparation difficult. If you don’t have a way to move people that can be saved, that would be a priority to add to my active shooter kit. That is also making the assumption that you know where to move them. Over all just a bad reality.

Lived the life of an EOD Enabler to a number of ODAs. First Team Sergeant asked me the same question Eric! But, after asking me why I wasnt there to kick in doors and stack bodies? Of course that was his way of determining how focused I was on MY JOB! I said "hell no! Im here to supplement your Charlies and to do Technical Intelligence tasks for my TF! When the shooting starts, Ill help all I can, but Im no pipe swinger!" He liked that answer! Gotta stay focused on your job as an enabler!

Great episode. Good comms is crucial ro the mission. I was an RTO in a recon unit when I was stationed in Vicenza way back in the day. I carried a PRC-77 with an attached VINSON. Yea, I'm old as dirt, but I was hella good at my job. Comms have come a LONG way! Keep up the good work!

I’ve got an improvement on your buzz saw that I used a scout sniper (rip). I added high vis/reflective tape in about 1.5 inch wide strip on two chem sticks. I would prep one vis and one ir chem light per mission with the reflective tape. The tape catches light from the sun or moon and just adds another layer to catch someone’s eye. And an alternative method for link up if your chemlights have died. I would conceal the tape by wrapping the 550 around that section. 👍🏼

Haven't finished the video, but I think another thing that is often overlooked is your logistics and support. Do you have someone with machining capabilities to make weapons, reload ammo, make new drones, make mortars, or even IEDs. Can you distribute and isolate different parts of the supply chain so it can't all be comprimised at once. Coming from an EOD background, if you can remove manufacturing, then all you are left with is small arms and the ability to harass military (or harm civilians in the hopes that brings other people to your side like we often saw in the GWOT). A bit less of the people employing specialty items in combat and more of the people who make sure you have them before combat begins. Also people who know how to train K9s.

You discussed enablers for full blown Red dawn scenario. There is also possibility of being under opressive govt - occupation. Now someone who has certain authority for example someone who is given authority to decide whether business is essential and therefore worthy of a fuel ration. Or a doctor who can arrange treatment of a wounded fighter as a industrial accident. Happened a lot in occupied Europe during WW2

About gear. I don't know for a combat support guys like drone operator or CLS but for a non-combat specialist like the mechanic in scenario you mentioned there is NO NEED for specialized loadout 90%of the time. Just give him the most basic rifleman stuff. 1. You're either fighting or doing this non combat role. You secure the area and then mr. mechanic can take off his backpack and dig for the rights tools or even take a toolbox from one of the cars. It's not a 3 minute task that can be cut down to 2 minutes because you happen to have a ratchet with 13mm socket in convienient reach. It's more like 20 minute task made 30 minute because of some stubborn rusted bolt. 2. Theese people already have thier tools of the trade organized in efficient way. You're asking them to turn this upside down and start from the scratch. Changes should be minimal. 3. There is chance that this specialist has no proper tactical training and gear. He will have to make do with hand me down gear. You'll probably be lucky if you put together decent rifleman kit for him.
