I'm usually stuck at work during the day.... I did not realize that aside from shooting these reviews at the buttcrack of dawn, you actually release them at that time too. Man, Imma have to come back and watch this after lunch. Edit: Worth coming back with some caffeine and food in me. And I dig the idea of the rise of high-end all American blends. It could also serve to really help bring definition to the regional styles (desert/Texas, PNW, Great Lakes, California, Colorado/Rockies, etc.) Imagine a flight with a Texas, a Washington/Oregon, a San Diego, a New York, and a blend of all those together.

Harvest Spirits is a farm distillery out Valatie(Va-lay-shuh), NY on an apple farm 20 minutes south of Albany. They produce a single malt whiskey, 3 brandies, 2 applejacks, two vodkas, and a gin.

I am trying this while watching this video. I've had it in the back of my cabinet for years because I really really disliked it at first. I had a really bad rubbery note. Could not get past it. Now smelling it again and cucumber water is such a good call by Rex, I think it tricked my brain to get past the rubbery alcohol note. It may have saved me from giving it away or a drain pour.

"hold on. hold on. the people watching know. you know. go ahead" Daniel: "I thought you were talkink about the light floral part of cucumber water..." Rex imagines sitting on Daniel's chest and throttling him. Daniel to himself: He won't theottle me. I'm his main mooch pipeline." Rex to himself: I can't throttle Daniel. He's my main mooch pipeline." Daniel should bottle and sell his ability to zone out a conversation to Doctors Fauchi and Birx.

Great show, as always. but I have a question regarding taste/pallet. Can a person's pallet change after a long course of time? I'm re-entering the world of whiskey after over a decade and bought a bottle of Jack Daniel's NO.7 as it has been my go-to whiskey before. however, it tastes nothing like i remember from back in the days. Could it be that my taste pallet have changed or the flavor of JD is different from before?

John Emerald distillery in Alabama makes a single malt smoked with pecan and peach wood. It is aged in 5 gal virgin charred oak, so it's like a sweet scotch/bourbon hybrid thing. About$40-50 retail. In an earlier press release on Whiskey Wash, their single malt was supposed to be finished with Alabama Norton wine staves, but there is no mention of that on the Emerald website

I can tell you exactly what Daniel did with the wildflower thing because I do the same thing. He wasn't actively listening to Rex, and made an oops. But when he was called out on it, he replayed what Rex said in his brain and found an out. My ex wife was very talkative. I'm more the strong silent type. So I learned how to turn off active listening but still log the conversation temporarily. So when she confronted me with "you're not listening!" I'd recall exactly what was said.

Given that MGP is a huge distiller with large stocks of whiskey, and the others are mainly small distillers who probably can't spare too much of their product for blending, I'm going to guess that the majority of that blend is probably the MGP malt.

I've been curious. If you were to do distillations of 100% corn, rye, barely, and wheat. Then take those 100%'s and blend those into different percentages if it would come out similar to just distilling them together, or if it would be a horrible/amazing flavor. Maybe age some separate and blend after aging, and do a blend right after distilling then age.

Ok, the maturation and then blend would be Canadian. From what I read. But the distill each grain, then blend, then mature would be a little different then.

I know a few craft distilleries do blends of different finished whiskies, thought not necessarily single grain mashbills. Coppersea, here in New York has one called "Springtown Straight Whiskey", which is a blend of their 100% rye, bourbon (60% corn, 30% rye, 10% malted barley), and corn whiskey (80% corn, 20% malted barley).

A number of American craft distillers are less than a decade old, and some of them started out with clear spirits and rums for the first year or two. Single malts have generally followed the corn whiskeys and bourbons (the first bottle of Balcones single malt I was able to find was in 2012, which was maybe two or three years after then first bottled a product). While MGP's operation goes back to its days as part of Seagram's and they might have older aged distillate for sale, all the other components of this blend are probably 3 to 5 years old, tops. Texas, New Mexico and Arizona aging, remember, involves some sort of multiplication formula - like "dog years".
