Mr. Stark, I have been a pool player for over 30 years, I have heard of snooker over the years but only recently have I truly began to study this fascinating sport. I must say that the manners and sportsmanship displayed by every person I have been exposed to so far, is way beyond that of any other sport I have ever seen. And I find you to be no exception. Over the past few days I have watched nearly 20 of your videos. You sir are a class act! You are inspiring to watch. And as much for your demeanor and class as for your obvious wealth of knowledge. I am 43 years old, and I assure you, I am not easily impressed. But you sir, are a credit to the sport and a true gentlemen. Hats off to you and God Bless. All My Best, J. Dallas Sword

John. Many thanks for your kind words. Snooker and pool are both demanding in cue delivery and control and I believe we can both learn from each other. I used to coach Karen Corr at snooker, she became ladies world champion but found it difficult to earn a living due to lack of interest in the ladies game. She moved to America, adapted her substantial snooker skills to pool and did very well.

This baulk alignment thing is so simple and yet..probably the most important aspect of anyones game. Really shocked me to see how badly aligned I was. I did find when straightened my cueing arm elbow into my body it felt uncomfortable but it was perfectly perpendicular from behind. How important is this arm when viewed from behind Barry. Its really improved my potting! Thanks Barry
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
Steve. It is generally considered an advantage to have everything in line but it is not essential. It is still possible to deliver the cue in a straight line and a lot of professionals do not comply to the text book theories. The fact that you have moved your elbow to a perpendicular position and now are potting balls more consistently is good, you went through the uncomfortable stage and obviously worked hard to get comfortable with the new position. However, this does not suit everyone and they have to adopt a more natural position, myself included. This is the true art of coaching, finding what works for the individual.

Thank you for this very informative video Mr. Stark. I have one question which is not related to the particular video. I've noticed that some players aim at a different part of the cue ball and strike at a different part. i've seen players aim very low but strike a little high. If you have covered this topic before please share the link. I have seen almost all of your video but was unable to find the answer to this.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
Ankit. Striking the cue ball in a different place to where they initially aim is not a deliberate ploy, its something that some players have unconsciously allowed to develop into their game. One of my pupils likes to address the cue ball at the bottom but actually strike it higher. He does this because he says it helps him to determine where the centre of the cue ball is. Like I often say, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."

Thank you Mr. Stark for the speedy response. I really appreciate all your effort in making the videos and answering the questions.

good afternoon Mr. Barry game snooker a little time and I already developed some techniques I have two tacos one big ferrule and the other is a slightly smaller ferrule, what's the difference?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Adao. The ferrule is the tubular element near the tip end of the cue. It is sometimes made from brass, stainless steel, plastic, ivory, or even silver but its purpose is to protect the cue at that end. It can be short or long in terms of its length, that is a matter of personal preference but its diameter is determined by the diameter of the cue at the tip end. The favoured diameter for snooker is between 9mm and 10mm.

Hi Barry,great videos.My son is 8 yo and is 4'7 tall (142cm). I am struggling to find him a decent snooker cue that would last him few years. He holds 48" cue right at the back and next size up seems to be 54". What cue length would you recommend for his size? Thanks
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
Simon. Its difficult to be precise without seeing the young man but if he is holding the 48" at the back then I don't think he will have any problems with the 54" under your guidance. The balance of the cue is important but where he holds the cue shouldn't upset this too much. However, knowing how quickly youngsters grow I would urge you to keep an eye on where he is holding the cue.
@FABNPG2 жыл бұрын
Dear Mr Stark, my son is in love with snooker and started regular practices at a very young age, at the academy, which is focused on kids and has lower and smaller (mostly 10ft) tables. I was told that lower tables are better for children, as they get used to correct posture from the start. Recently I came across discussion pointing that it doesn't matter and kids could start at normal table by using some kind of platform to make them "taller" or even without it. In my case it is irrelevent now, as my boy is almost 8 at the moment and quite tall for his age, and is ok with standard snooker table, but I wonder what is your perspective on this matter? Does it matter on which table the child begins his adventure with poting?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach2 жыл бұрын
FABNPG. I like to see children adopt a good position from the start, to this end I support a lower table or some sort of platform around the table to raise their height. I am not too worried about the playing area size at an early age because they will soon adapt to the full size.

Hi Barry. Should a beginner attempt position on the cue ball, or just attempt to pot the ball, and only worry about position once he improves?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
George. Beginners should be encouraged to work out were the cue ball is going early on their development. Start with simple straight pots and try to control the amount of forward momentum on the cue ball. Then give them slight angles on simple pots and allow them to learn were the cue ball will end up. Increase the angle slightly and again let them work out were the cue ball will go. Now do the same exercises but apply a little stun and let them see the differences that little bit of stun can make. All players want to learn to screw the ball back but be patient with this, learn to control stun first and screw will become a natural progression.

@Barry, how important is elbow position to have 90 degree for right hand. I'm just like this young man and my elbow is a bit off line (slightly to the left) but my cueing is straight. should I try to always keep my elbow exactly 90 degree behind the line ? or its fine to keep my natural arm position ? (I'm asking this because I got stuck in about 50 break maximum for a long time :( and I'm not sure what is wrong anymore )
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach3 жыл бұрын
AliReZa. The object is to cue straight, how a player does this varies between individuals. Trying to force your arm into an unnatural position will not work, you say you cue straight but are stuck around the fifty mark in your break building so to my mind you need to improve your cue ball control or shot selection or both. If you are missing shots that you really ought to be getting it may be that you are decelerating on the shot, if that is the case just try to put a LITTLE wrist into your cue action, this may help.

hello sir can you please guide me on how do i figure out where i need to hit object ball with the cue for it go into the pocket thanks
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
xBullet. If you are struggling with your aim please use the ghost ball method which is explained in detail in one of my videos. This will give you a constructive guide on where to aim. Please remember however, that most people miss because they do not deliver the cue where they are aiming and that is because their cue action needs work.

Barry can I ask if the potting angle changes depending on the pace of a shot? I did hear this and wondered if it is true?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
gmonkey. It seems I am your favourite grandad so I better try to answer your question. No it does not change is the short answer. Where this thought possibly comes from is that the the more pace a player uses the less likely he is to deliver the cue correctly and therefore makes a different contact on the object ball leading to a few possible mis-conceptions. Also on slow shots the potting angle can change slightly because a lot of players prefer to use side on angle pots. The end result of this is that because of friction between the two balls the object ball can be kicked slightly off its true directional line.

He sends his apologies, but hopes that in the meantime there are other experienced players/coaches out there in the community that may be able to offer a response to your question. Barry will be back responding to your comments as soon as time permits. Thank you for your support.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach7 жыл бұрын
Adnan. If I understand you correctly its the pressure of playing matches that affects your standard of play. You are not alone on this issue, many players can play well in practise but not in matches. My advise is in your practise establish a pre-shot routine, one that is comfortable for you and is effective. Then take that routine to your matches. Also practise diaphragmatic breathing to calm you down, it will help. Good luck.

@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
ben. The aim should start with the butt end of the cue, but when you get down to play a shot you are looking at the line of the shot so your butt end of the cue could be off line. Place your cue on the baulk line looking at the cue tip and where you are aiming. Then check that your cue butt is also on line by dropping the cue butt to the cushion rail and checking that is also on the baulk line. Believe me it is common for it not to be and this needs correcting.
