Bars & girls are back in Udon Thani | Living in Udon Thani Thailand

I was stationed at Udorn Airbase at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Big changes there since then. I have returned to Thailand since then. But only to Pattaya and Phuket. On my next visit, I want to revisit Udorn Thani. Do you happen to know if there is still a military base South of the town?

There is John. Now called Wing 23 and still an active airbase for the Thai air force. There is also an ex US base called Ramasun Station a little further south on highway 2. Was used as a radar centre listening to Chinese and Vietnamese coms during the conflict. Let me know when you are in town. @@scottgeen3062 Yes. I believe that your Mom is correct. The USA has occasionally done some good things, along with some atrocious things. The WW 2 generation was the best, perhaps in the history of my country. I have had the honor of meeting some of those dear veterans. One of them fought in a battle on Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. He fought side by side with soldiers from New Zealand. Quite a guy! But that’s not me. I’m more of a lover than a fighter. I would have nothing to do with the US Marines! Unless of course, my homeland was directly threatened. WW 2 was very different from our unneeded invasion of Vietnam.

I like Udon, last visit was in 2013 on my 50th Birthady, some good bars and restaurants and friendly girls that don't pressure you too much. I lived in Namsom for a couple of years about a 90 minute drive away, I would often stay at Top Mansion as it was so cheap but clean and comfortable and had a car park. I would start the night in the Irish Clock as the girls and food were lovely, then end up in Day & night. If my Mrs was away I'd go to Udon for a bit of R&R and stay at @home so if she called me and asked where I am I could tell her I was @home.

I haven't been to Thailand for twelve years now. I seem to remember the price was 350 to 400 a night. Things have changed a lot in that soi since I was last there. Pooky you speak amazing English. It amazes me to see everyone mingling without a mask. COVID numbers are raging here in USA. Bars & restaurants are closed. Open only for take-out. I don’t blame Thailand for restricting all flights.

Just a few cases from some military guys returning to the country but they were detected at the border and are now in quarantine John. Other than that, the country is clear. Down to quick, decisive positive action as well as a relatively compliant population has helped keep things under control. 58 deaths. 1 is too many but when you consider that the population is around the same as the UK, I think Thailand did well.

In the beginning there where Millions chinees toerist there. BUT what Thailand did was desinfect the complete country, from buildings, doorhandels from cars on the street, to schools, trains, metro, busses, taxi , EVERYTHING with big spraycanons and small sprayers for inside. Handgel for the shops for everybody bedfore enter a building or shop. Now its clear. But europe and usa gouvernment DID NOTHING.

A Thailand vlogger that actually knows how to put on a respectable shirt............gets my vote. Top Mansion used to be THE place, and is still an excellent deal, and most importantly has covered parking. The same applies here, get a room on the Day and Night side, but not near the road. That way the whole building will shield you from the massive noise coming from the nightclub in the Central outside parking lot, that place has caused problems for many years, and still the damn place stays open, huge bass noise until 3am. Maybe COVID has closed it down, THAT would be good news.

Not sure that I agree with you Jeremy. Day and Night is the heart of Soi Samphan and I'm not a drinker. There are plenty of places where the noise does not affect you. Glad you liked the shirt. More often than not Gant, but I think this was Superdry 😁

Stayed at the Irish Clock several times when Steve George and Mali ran it back in the day. Good hosts. Enjoyed a short stroll across the railway tracks to Nong Bua park for morning exercise from here. Don't remember Day and Night ever being that busy. Occasional visit to Nutty Park area but usually ended up at a place called Mr. Tong's or the local disco Tawan daeng.

My neighbour is a Provincial Official who was away last week for meetings with Officials from Bangkok in regards to their plans for opening up the country. All I can say is going to be a long time yet before they open up to general tourists. He said they will take it one country at a time and it will be done very slowly.

I stayed at Joe's ruysuk hotel and pool for 12 days when I visited, was laid back there even when a pool party was on it was cool and relaxed atmosphere, the girl I went there to meet was called pookie too, the walking street market on Saturday was amazing especially when the lights came on, I'm desperate to go back

Corvid-19 put a stop to that and the tickets are still paid for and awaiting a date when we can go and come back, for a couple of week holiday, without having to quarantine 2 weeks on arrival in Birmingham and another 2 weeks on arrival back in Bangkok. We were hoping for Christmas but it's looking more likely to be March / April 2021.

When you have time can you review the massage shops on Nong Prajak Lake near the big duck !!!!!! This place was suggested after i said the massage parlours in soi Sampan are pretty ropey campared to Pattaya .

The best Italian restaurant is down at the end of the street to the left. The Irish pub was my go to spot for Western food and I stayed there a couple nights. So many memories of that place. I got sick and went to the Bangkok Hospital and it was only like 35 USD including the medication. This was back in 2015 and I'm so disappointed I never made it back there and now the scamdemic has thrown a spanner in the works for awhile. Oh well great memories thanks for the video.

Nice video, good to see everything opening up again, UD town looks great. I liked the little coffee shop Eat Happy, nice to see little family places like that still going, i always try to support the small family run places. The UK is currently talking to the Thai Government about an "air bridge " to Bangkok, but it seems that will not happen before September as there is still a lot of Covid-19 over here. I think Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea etc will be welcome back before Europe. Which means I am stuck here in UK and cannot get back to Udon for a while longer, my girlfriend wants me back to help her choose two Buffalo's, i told her choose two that look like me so you will not miss me so much....lol

The authorities have done an incredible job of dealing with this (take a look at the numbers in other parts of the world) and are continuing to deal with the situation as best they can. Love the annual fair at Tung Si Muang from Dec 1 till 10th every year. Those were good old times. If you have time please do review of Don Bosco School.

Wow! I'm really surprised by the amount of small girly bars catering to the falang crowd. I mistakenly envisioned Udon Thani to have maybe one of those bars, if that. Not a bad place if was 25 years younger. Mind you, now I prefer the town/village where you're living, and not the heart of the city. There are some very nice condos within a few minutes walk of the city centre and railway station. called Lumpini Condos Scott. Don't quote me on it but I believe they cost around 10,000 per month. A good friend of mine who is a professional footballer was living there with his wife and young daughter and loved the place. Nice roof gardens with swimming pools.
