I generally recommend reactors NOT watch the actual videos for Tool, and instead just watch either a lyric video or have the lyrics available while viewing. The videos can be distracting from both the music and the lyrics, and sometimes have nothing at all to do w/the subject of the song. Like the other 2 Tool reactions you have, most of Tool's videos on their YT channel are still shots of the album cover rather than a video like this. It's a little grainy, but the live version of this song recorded at the Reading festival in 93 is really good and shows how accurately they sound compared to their albums. It's usually the version of this song I request from reactors. They recreate their album sound live like very few bands can these days. If you are looking for more Tool songs to react to I would recommend Vicarious, Push It (live version from the Salival album), 46 and 2, Aenema, Descending, Invincible to name just a few. This song is about the struggle with addiction, and was written with a friend of the band in mind who was also a musician who only felt they could be creative while on substances.

"how accurately they sound compared to their albums" ???? Maybe Maynard's voice is clear. The audio of the music sucks. I am glad they DIDN,T do the Reading version. I get your point not to watch the official video because of the distraction, but don't tell me you need to listen to the Reading version because of the good sound/audio.

@@ysinvangulik1004 This. I was about to hop into the comments to say, while I generally agree that Tool is fantastic live and usually better heard for the first time that way, that PARTICULAR video is just awful. It's grainy, messy, hard to follow, and people are usually distracted by Maynard's theatrics.

Justin makes great vids so I agree.

Tool isn't a bad for people that have to be spoonfed information or have their hands held to process information they do have the capacity to deduce for themselves. The videos are a showcase of Adam Jones' film and special effects work which is his actual "day job". People who don't "get it" pretty much immediately aren't GOING to "get it" at any point. So, don't recommend that people not react to the WHOLE of the art, recommend that they don't bother in the first place and to go crank some bullshit that requires zero thought or effort to listen to or understand. There are plenty of bands and artists and songs that sound exactly the same and have very easily digestible lyrics and music videos, and those are the ones people who can't "get" a Tool music video should look for so they know what to expect every time after they hear it or see it the first time. No forward movement. Forward movement intellectually is far too subversive

The drums. I love the syncopation between the hi-hat and bass drum on the main beat. This song and Three Of A Perfect Pair (King Crimson) are really good practice for hi-hat. Everything from Tool is amazing. Maynard is top five rock vocalist of all time. But you know how those lists go😅 ✌️

The song is about a friend of there's that has to be on something to be creative in his trade. So the friend is always high on something when he needs to be creative. Also is the justification for being under the influence.

How tool does their songs is the music is done then Maynard adds the lyrics which on how the music makes him feel first listen, then the video is made by Adam which is his take on Maynards reaction to the music.

No wrong answers. There’s the lyricists meaning, the bands meaning, and the listeners meaning. The video is mostly, if not all, Adams interpretation.

Weird that you found an edited version that TipperGore'd the lyrics, but has the real lyrics in the subtitles. Watching tool videos on a first listen is not recommended. They rarely are connected in any way to the neaning of the song.

The song leaves a lot of room for people to interpret it's meaning. For me it sounds like a person stuck in a warped world created by his addiction. You could say the video echoes this with its creepy set design. Addiction is the shadow "stalking" the singer. Offering false (empty) hope and "promises" . While at the same time causing the addict to be overwhelmed with self-loathing as if an invisible "finger" was pointing at him...accusing him of being worthless. The "Jesus" and "Mary" parts of the song may have something to do with seeking salvation or help. However the addict feels unable to find help. The part of him that had once felt optimistic and strong is left in the past and gone forever. So any "whistles" or "whispers" he once may have followed like a beacon to find a way out of his current predicament are gone...in the "past"... lost forever.

@w.geoffreyspaulding65886 күн бұрын
DONT EVER WATCH TOOL OFFICIAL VIDEOS! Especially not for a first listen to a song. They confuse…they distract you so that you don’t concentrate on the lyrics. Humans are visual creatures: if our brain has to choose between visual and audio, it will concentrate on the visual. That’s OK if the video complements the song, but in Tool’s case, the videos are WILD ……good but utterly distracting. Studio or live with Tool.
