Great place, great sign! That steak sandwich with marinara used to be pretty common in the Capital Region back in the day, but you don't see it much anymore (the Philly Cheese Steak kind of took over). But, when I was a kid, places around the Albany area always did it. In the early 90s, I worked at Sammy's Pizza in Latham (which, looking back, I can honestly say rocked every pizza in the region) and we used to crank out those steak subs with marinara all night long. Ours had mozzarella on it, though.

There’s nothing wrong with eating food like this every once in a while, especially from a family run establishment. I don't go there often, but Morrettes is definitely a Schenectady staple. You're not wrong that the people in Morrettes are old. You know you're from Schenectady when you are familiar with the guy walking down the street with the trash. You drive down Erie Blvd enough, and you notice he hustles down that street literally every single day and he's hard to miss.

I LOVE going to local places like Morrette's! When I'm traveling I always look for these little places because the big chains suck usually. One big sandwich chain I do like and will hit on a trip is Firehouse Subs. They have perfected making things the same everytime, no matter where you get it....think McDonald's but for actual good sandwiches. Marinara on a steak sandwich....not something I would have expected.

Schenectady has so many great family owned restaurants that have been around long time. If you want to explore outside Pizza a lot of good corner spots that have great food and if you're in the area I would highly suggest talking to some locals and hitting up some of these places.

I always use a knife and fork at Morette's. And get it with sautéed peppers, onions,, mushrooms, cheese and sauce. It's a big mess otherwise, especially with one hand lol. And don't forget the fresh-cut fries!
