My favorite Bart and Lisa moments are when Bart is the only one to understand Lisa's grief and he buys her Bleeding Gums Murphy's album for her. And then Lisa's understanding Bart's fears over selling his own soul, Lisa's buys back his soil. Two simple moments that show how much they care about each other, it also how much they understand each other.

A moment I love so much is after Lisa says Barts name for the first time and Bart run downstairs to tell his parents that ‘I’m her first word!’ (which is an adorable way to phrase it in itself) and Marge says ‘I’m not surprised, Lisa’s crazy about you! She thinks you hung the moon’ which is not a phrase I’ve heard anywhere else and it’s said so beautifully and just really reinforces that adoration Lisa has for Bart even has a baby that Bart then reciprocates. I think it’s not just that ‘Bart’ is Lisa’s first word because she’s heard it said a lot, but it’s her first word because she adores him. Great bit of parenting by Marge to make sure Bart knows that too.

So I have an idea for a Simpsons Video Essay: Something I've noticed about Marge in the early Simpsons episodes is that she often repressed a lot of her true feelings when it came to her own personal emotions. I think the best example is Fear of Flying where she had a nervous breakdown over her fear of flying (see what I did there?) and when she's making tons of food for the family as a coping mechanism she mutters to herself something like "Mother said don't complain. Be good. Smile, be polite" as she walks off. So maybe a deep dive into Marge's childhood and how it affected her and her parenting would be interesting to see. We don't get a lot of focus on Marge's childhood as we do Homer's so I think that would be neat to see.

The crying made my chest hurt more and made me get even snottier than I already was, but I couldn’t help it. I really missed my brother in those moments. I like Bart and Lisa's friendship, my only issue is I feel that the writers are waaaaaay more sympathetic to Lisa than they are to Bart. Like anytime Bart makes a sacrifice for Lisa its always something really personal and will change his life, whereas Lisa very rarely has to make the same level of Sacrifice for Bart
@CalmClamFam3 жыл бұрын
I think it still fits since older siblings sometimes sacrifice more personal things for their younger siblings without asking for anything in return. Older siblings can “grow up fast” when they take on the role of “protector” or “care taker”, because they want their younger siblings to have better life experiences. This naturally makes the younger sibling seem like they aren’t reciprocating the same personal sacrifices. As an older sibling, I always find myself spoiling my younger brother and sister by sharing my Netflix account, giving advice on taxes, buying random gifts, etc. I don’t really expect anything in return, because they are a great part of my life and I’m happy to help when I can.
@michaelfields39513 жыл бұрын
@@CalmClamFam I have no issue with elder siblings being given greater responsibility. I just don't want the writer to naturally give moral superiority to Lisa and to actually look at Lisa objectively and stop assuming that she's the "Good" kid and Barts the "Bad" kid . Like the writer repeatedly state Lisa is going to be successful and Bart is going to be a Failure and honest it gets a little annoying. Like I get that Lisa is Matt Groenings favourite but can we just throw Bart a bone and stop with the Lisa worship on the show

@@michaelfields3951 Yeah I understand what you mean. I don’t like when characters become a “punching bag” and writers underutilize a character’s strengths. It might be why the show is basically dead since they fail to evolve it to new heights and continue to repeat the same formula.

I've always loved seeing Bart and Lisa's relationship unfold the way it has over the years. Even when they're constantly getting on each other's nerves and making each other miserable, you know that they genuinely love one another. It honestly reminds me of my relationship with my own sister. There were times when I was truly terrible to her for no reason other than I found her annoying and aggravating. There were times when I even beat her up just for getting on my nerves. My dad put the fear of God into afterwards, and rightfully so, showing me how awful I was to her. He would always say, "You two are all you got." And you know, he was right. My sister and I are on much better terms now as adults, and she's honestly one of, if not the only person I feel I can really talk to about anything. I can see Bart feeling the same way at times. Although I relate to Lisa a lot more than any other character on The Simpsons, I genuinely see some of myself in Bart a lot of the time; especially when he's shown connecting with the people in his life in real, meaningful ways. He genuinely wants to connect with Homer, he doesn't want to hurt or disappoint Marge, he struggles with, but loves Lisa, and he's always good to Maggie. He's also really close with Abe. Even though it's a small, one off moment, one of my favorite bits of dialogue comes from that Easter episode where Bart is framed for egging the townspeople. Nobody believed him when he said he didn't do it. He then admits that he would lie to Homer, Marge, and Lisa in a heartbeat, but that he would never lie to Maggie. He then picks her, looks her in the eye, and tells her that he did not pull that prank. Maggie then nods confirming that Bart is telling the truth. It's a small moment, but I think it perfectly sums up Bart's feelings and attitude towards Maggie. And, I honestly think he would stand by his principle of never lying to her even as they grow older. Everything I just said can be seen on display in one of my all time favorite Simpsons episodes, "Barthood"; which Johnny showed clips of towards the end of the video. I just love seeing how Bart grows and changes while attempting to reconcile his relationships with the people in his family; particularly Homer and Lisa. The thing I love most about this episode is that it shows Bart having a positive future. After being set straight by Lisa, Bart goes on to open his own successful custom bike shop. He's doing something he loves, and he's on better terms with everyone now. There's also that version of Bart who became a successful operator of a legal marijuana store in the episode where Lisa became President years after refusing to go to college. That episode I liked because it did something really different with Lisa's character, and showed that she could turn out a success no matter what she does with her life. I also really appreciated how they handled her relationship with Marge. The fact that Bart was the one who played a part in helping them make a breakthrough also speaks to how much he had grown as well. I know that the flashforward episodes that show Lisa married to Milhouse, Bart divorced and working on his relationship with his sons, and Maggie being a world famous rock star like "Holidays of Future Past" are considered to take place in the definitive future of The Simpsons, but I honestly would love it if the series finale were to incorporate elements of "Holidays of Future Past" and "Barthood" just so we could see Bart in a better place in life, and the entire Simpsons family on good lasting terms with one another.

Bart and Lisa’s relationship was a lot like mine and my brother’s when we were growing up. It’s one of the reasons why I started watching this show when I was so young. It’s just such a realistic and wholesome representation of a sibling bond and I love it!

I think they removed "Stark Raving Dad" because Matt Groening and Al Jean think that there may have been a possibility that MJ used his appearance in this episode to help lure kids to his mansion. At least thats what I heard in @TheRealJims video on the episode

This is such a realistic portrayal of sibling relationships. They're very chaotic, but in the end love each other and have each other's backs.

You should check out Season 27, Episode 9 “Barthood” Provides a really interesting look at their sibling rivalry in an advancing timeline, from a few years before the simpsons primary time, all the way to Bart and Lisa’s early adulthood. I thought it really fleshed out their relationship, especially since it’s told entirely from Bart’s perspective as the ‘screwup.’ I think a lot of second-run siblings living in the shadow of more successful ones can really relate to Bart in this episode, and a lot of successful siblings can understand Lisa’s perspective even through the lens of Bart’s biases.

As someone who grew up with two siblings i can relate. We argued, we fought, we envied, we yelled and insulted each other. But what makes all of this irrelevant is that we deeply love each other no matter what comes. Since the moment each one of us looked into the light of the world with his older sibling hugging him, we all know that there are ones who will stay until death. Not like all the friends who come and go.

I always like the future episodes. The relationship that the two of then have still remains sort of childlike in my opinion, it matures sure, but bart still sees her as his little 8 year old sister that needs his shoulder to cry on sometimes and lisa still sees him as her older brother that would do anything for her. I also appreciate how, more than once, bart brings Marge and lisa together after a fight, especially in said future episodes. My favorite so far is the treehouse of horror episode in season 32. All he does is text Marge, but he also helps lisa realise that she has been there the whole time cheering her on. I dont have any siblings, but if I did I would hope that my relationship with them would be similar to bart and lisa, sure they tease each other, but you dont have to look hard to see they love each other too.

I really do appreciate the way their bond works. It's not perfect, but when one is in trouble, the other will do anything they can to help. I didn't have such bond with my sibling as a child, but when I grew up and didn't know where to look for support, we suddenly began to form a new bond with each other, the better one, the supportive one, throwing all of our past arguments and disagreements aside. I love my sibling a lot, they're much older than me, and they're a person that I value and trust the most in my life. I'm so glad to have such a precious person in my life.

My best Bart and Lisa scene is from one of the future episodes where Bart runs a art shop I believe and he closes it down and on one of the doors is a mural of Lisa

My fave episode has been Barthood and probably will be forever! Like I saw it on cable on one of the days they were doing a marathon and I remember watching it and it being like the first Simpsons episode I actually remember liking. I have a weird relationship with the Simpsons. My dad was super into it so I grew up watching it but like I never grew a love for it like my dad. I like maybe 1 in 10 episodes and those are all probably older episodes

I always loved that the Simpson's always had some form of sibling love written in, but one episode I would suggest to add to the list would be "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington," for Bart stating that Lisa would be the horse to bet on in the writing contest, and then their next interaction being Bart teasing Lisa about what bed she picked once she was a finalist (I mean who didn't have an older sibling that made them think their choice was the wrong one growing up?) And in the end, Bart stating that Lisa was his inspiration. Although most of these interactions are more throwaway than anything, it shows just what sibling love is. They are the worst enemies in your life at points, but at the end of the day, they're the ones you want in your corner when times get tough.

Their relationship reminds me of the relationship I have with my brother. We fought a lot and all but we love each other. It's also funny since we both are like Bart and Lisa. I'm the one who gets the grades and all and my brother is the trouble maker so have that, too.

What a spectacular writeup, I love your attention to “Lisa’s First Word” especially. In terms of episodes over the first eight seasons I feel like “Bart’s Girlfriend” also deserves a mention, when Bart falls for the reverend’s daughter Jessica and she turns out to be a mean little sneak who gets him in trouble and hurts him repeatedly while maintaining a good-girl act that everyone believes. Lisa’s devotion to Bart is obvious throughout the episode. As his only confidante she encourages him not to take the bad treatment and advises him to stop spending time with this girl who’s making him miserable, and he actually realizes it’s good advice and takes it. Then when Jessica frames Bart for stealing from the church collection plate and he still cares about her too much to give her away (plus realizes no one will believe him), Lisa volunteers to do the reading the next week just so she can get up in front of the congregation and publicly clear her brother’s name. What gets me about this episode is that it’s almost a reversal of the “Bart the General” situation in that Bart is the one who’s vulnerable because his feelings are messing with him, and Lisa is the one who comes in swinging to defend him from a bully. There’s a great exchange where he tells her Jessica’s hair smells like Froot Loops and she goes “Yeah? I eat Froot Loops for breakfast.” They really are each other’s protectors.

I always loved Bart and Lisa episodes one of my favorite from the HD era is 2010s Boy Meets Curl Lisa has a subplot and Bart helps her out of the trouble she's in. I also remember enjoying season 15s Milhouse dosen't live here any more that episode shows just how much Bart and Lisa mean to each other.

One of my personal favorite modern Simpsons episodes was when a group of girls invited Lisa over to a sleepover to bully her and Bart, after initially not doing anything because siblings, hears them bullying her over the phone and promptly comes over and puts horse glue in all their hair and rescues Lisa. It shows that while modern Simpsons may not be as good as the glory days occasionally the writers remember what made the classics amazing

Not going to lie, this video brought a tear to my eye, it's easy to forget how close they really are despite their occasional sibling rivalry But one of my favorite episodes to show their bond was "Milhouse doesn't live here anymore," where they realize they are best friends Just love their final moment together when Bart makes all those cards for her and reminds her that he still loves and values her

I actually really like this video. I just got into the Simpsons about 2 months ago, and this dynamic was something that really stood out especially in today's culture. For a lot of us who were older, we were basically forced to get along with our siblings. For better or for worse, we had to make it work. There were bad times. There were good times. But it taught a lot of compromise. And that sort of compromise is something I don't see a lot in modern culture. Not just among family, but among people in general. Folks are so easy to run off and do their own thing, or straight out ignore each other instead of trying to figure out "how to enjoy a random Saturday together with someone who's only similarity is proximity." I watch these earlier episodes of these two bonding, and I just can't fathom modern kids doing that with KZbin and cellphones. And while Bart and Lisa are still extremely different, they bond a lot over family, and their shared cartoon show. How many kids even watch the same shows today to have fun conversations with? As much as I loathed the ending of Game of Thrones, being able to talk to everyone about it is really a magical feeling. I don't want to be a grandpa Simpson and say times were better in the olden days, because I truly do feel that cellphones, KZbin, technology, and choices are better than not having those freedoms. I don't believe people should learn to compromise and get along, because they were forced together and no other choice. I want people who value things like family and friendship to actively chase those goals instead of ignoring them to browse their phone. And I'm just glad the Simpsons provides a window into a world that's an optional choice to take. That people can still find community and compassion within a family that's dysfunctional. And that there's more to life than just surfing the net all day. The options are out there. And the best part about television is that it shows them to us. Gives us inspiration to chase the dreams we want to have, and be the kind of people we want to be. And that's the kind of message Lisa Simpson would be proud of. Because after all, she is.. Lisa Simpson. (those earlier episodes were truly gold).

This video was so beautiful!! Thank you Johnny for making this video, I was crying the whole way through! Barthood is a great episode that shows Bart and Lisa's childhood through the lense of the movie Boyhood. And at the end, Bart and Lisa make up just like they always do. 🥰💜 Edit: this video also help me remember the times I shared with my older sister, where she is Bart and I am Lisa. And it's made me realize how we are like them. Thank you Johnny for helping me remember that. 💜💜💜
