Ive always wondered what would happen if you lined up 10 megaphones in a row and yell into them, today I put that idea to the test! That literal feedback loop was crazy loud!

@@Mikey-ym6ok 100 watt guitar amplifiers can easily trash your hearing. You should wear ear plugs if you're going to be close to them. The effect is less with some distance, but a long time period around them can out-weigh that.

No super shockwave. Well that was a disappointing episode of myth busters. Just to add insult to injury, when he said he'd destroy a wine glass with a megaphone I was expecting him to do it with a resonate frequency. Instead he dropped the megaphone on the glass.

3:12 Probably the reason that you got a louder sound with the megaphones in a loop was that they were all feedback-squealing at once, and so their combined sound was louder than hooking them together in a line and measuring just the front one's volume. :D

This is exactly what I expected, and, you're exactly right about why it isn't that much louder. The amplifiers clip. The first megaphone is pretty loud, but still coherent. the next megaphone is louder, but clipped.(saturation distortion) After that, the rest are just a square wave, at the fundamental frequency of your voice. The first 2 megaphones are loud, the rest of the 8, are maybe half again louder, than the first two. As for breaking the wine glass, the only way that would happen, is if the resonant frequency of the wine glass matched the resonant frequency of the horn. Otherwise, there just isn't enough amplifier power, to do it. you would have better luck, finding the right note on a trumpet, that matches the resonant frequency of the glass, even though, the amplifier in a megaphone is ~10 watts, and a person can barely blow more than 1/2 watt into a brass instrument, breaking glasses is all about resonance.

As an electrical engineer, I have to say that if one megaphone was capable of amplifying another it would be a clear indication that some components were heavily overspecified. You want everything at the limit of amplification with acceptable distortion. Anything beyond that is wasted expense.

It is saturation. They can only produce output so loud. Once it hits that level, no matter how loud your input is, output is going to remain same, but distorted (non linearity)

Shouting in someone's ear is 110 db. The loudest human voice recorded is 129 dB. (Jill Drake) Maybe plains make 120 db at takeoff, but a *plane* is closer to 150 dB at 25 meters. Any lower decibel readings were recorded at a distance of hundreds of feet. Why would it even be possible that you could make as much noise as a jet engine at takeoff? They are moving way more air than you could ever conceivably do.

Famix Still wouldn't work, they don't work that way, they take the input sound and output it at a set level. A loud sound going into. The megaphone will still only come out at the megaphones set volume.

For the record permanent hearing loss occurs at virtually all sound levels, it's just that it needs to be sustained for longer periods of time -or more frequent- for it to do the same damage as a louder sound.

The reason it doesn't get much louder is because the electronics in each megaphone compresses the sound and levels out the input from the microphone. That's why you can whisper into it and it's still amplified by the speaker. Conversely, loud shouting doesn't increase the volume much because that's brought to the same relative level or decibel range as the whisper. The same 144 year-old technology is used in traditional telephone receivers in order to amplify the sound. That's also what gives it its "squashed" megaphone sound. So since each megaphone is compressing the sound, when you talk into one and have that go to the next it's only going to compress the volume and output whatever maximum it's set to and so on and so forth. Each megaphone is going to physically block the sound somewhat. Any increase in volume is going to be from the sound bleeding from each megaphone, but the increase will be by diminishing results, not multiplicative.
