very cool, we started making our own in the bar because most premade grenadine is just disgusting and as you mentioned has too many additives. the hibiscus flowers seem like an awesome addition. we basically make ours the same but we add pomegrenate molasses or in a pinch grape molasses works really well, too. it doesn't look as fancy in a tequila sunrise or similar drinks, but just tastes so much better, as in it actually tastes really good. also makes for an awesome base for pomegrenate lemonade/soda.

Great video, thanks! What is the shelf life for this grenadine and should it be stored in the fridge or at room temperature?
@BarTalkCocktails7 жыл бұрын
+Cameron Smith Hey there, thanks! You should get about 4 weeks shelf life from my grenadine recipe. If you add a small amount of vodka, (40%alc/vol or 80 proof) about 1/4 oz. you'll get a slightly longer shelf life. I like to keep my grenadine in the fridge because it lasts a bit longer and it thickens up even more. You can also freeze it for an even longer lifespan but it might take some of the freshness out of it. Typically, I only get about a week out of my grenadine because I use it often. And you can't beat the wonderful fresh taste it has right after you make it. You'll never buy store bought again. Check out some of my other Syrup videos, lots of good recipes. Thanks for watching! Great video!!! Can you use hibiscus syrup instead? If so, how much would you recommend?
@BarTalkCocktails3 жыл бұрын
Hibiscus syrup makes a great substitute for grenadine. Simply combine 4 cups water, 2 cups sugar, 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers, and the rind from 1 lemon. To get it thick like grenadine, reduce it to half over med-high heat. This might take 10-15 minutes. Let cool completely. Strain and bottle. Will keep 2 weeks refrigerated. Cheers!
@snoop88113 жыл бұрын
@@BarTalkCocktails That sounds great too. And thank you for the recipe. But I was saying hibiscus syrup instead of dried hibiscus flowers. If so, how much syrup to replace the dried flowers? Thanks again.
@BarTalkCocktails3 жыл бұрын
I've never made grenadine with hibiscus syrup, but I know it's sweet and would replace the sugar more than it would the dried flowers. As a starting point, I would sub out the sugar for the same amount of syrup - 8 oz. or one cup of syrup. You may need less depending on how sweet your syrup really is. You'll have to experiment and let me know. I think the syrup will work nicely and complement the grenadine both as a sweetener and a thickener. Cheers!

Could this be used in layerd shots? It dosent seem at thick as the regular stuff and would most likly float insted of sink. Could i reduce it dow even more to get it thicker?
@BarTalkCocktails6 жыл бұрын
You're correct. My homemade grenadine isn't quite as thick as the store bought stuff but, it can definitely be used in layered shots. There's enough sugar in it to give the necessary density for layering. However, something like Kahlua might fight with the grenadine to get a clean layer. More reduction can be a good idea as your syrup will get thicker. Although you end up with less grenadine by reducing it further, the bonus is a more intense flavour. Refrigerating the grenadine syrup before using it will also help thicken it up. Happy experimenting, cheers!
@jellezegers3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Just came to this video because of steve the bartender! I love the video and I'm planning to make the syrup myself :). I have 2 questions though: how long will the syrup last? And why should you not let it boil during the making? I really hope you'll read this comment despite the video being so old :) Greetings from the Netherlands
@BarTalkCocktails3 жыл бұрын
Hello from Canada, Jelle. The syrup will last for a good month in the refrigerator, longer if you fortify it with some alcohol. It won't last that long though. It's that tasty. If you boil the juice and hibiscus flowers, some scorching will result in leaving a charred taste that will give the syrup an off-flavour. Slow and steady wins the race. Cheers!

@@BarTalkCocktails Thank you so much! I will try this very soon
@DeDraconis7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use grenadine fast enough to make a batch that size, or even half, worth it. How long do you suspect it keeps for, cause I'm guessing no more than a month in the fridge? Could I just dump a bit of Vodka in there to keep it longer? It'd probably brighten up the colour more, too.
@BarTalkCocktails7 жыл бұрын
+DeDraconis That's right. You'll only get about a month in the fridge and a little longer with the addition of vodka. The best suggestion is to simply freeze the grenadine in small batches. You could pour it into an ice-cube tray and use what you need as you go. Thanks for watching, I have other syrup videos on this channel if you’re looking for recipes. Cheers!

Would you say that hibiscus tea would work rather then using actual hibiscus flower?
@BarTalkCocktails6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hibiscus tea would work just fine. Sometime though, hibiscus tea will include other ingredients and could potentially alter the taste of your syrup. I hope you give it a try. It Tastes Great. Cheers!
@sv1226 жыл бұрын
I'm getting the last ingredient later today so I can finally make this at home. My dried hibiscus does have a bit of a smell although not unpleasant. Just a quick question: most syrups have a bit of strong liqour added (wodka most of the time) to keep it good longer. Why not grenadine?
@BarTalkCocktails6 жыл бұрын
By all means, add some vodka. It will extend the life of your grenadine - if it lasts that long. That's how good it tastes. Also, this recipe only yields about a cup so, you don't get too much and it will disappear quickly.
@staytunedforgottentvmedia64175 жыл бұрын
@@BarTalkCocktails If the vodka is added, about how long will it last in refrigerator? Also, where does one find the flowers?
@BarTalkCocktails5 жыл бұрын
You'll get at least 6 weeks maybe more with the addition of vodka to my grenadine recipe. However, it won't last that long. It tastes that good. You could also freeze it in icecube trays for an even longer lifespan. The hibiscus flowers you can find at speciality health food stores. You can also buy them online. Cheers!

Now that we have the syrup, how the heck do you make an Roy Roger?
@BarTalkCocktails2 жыл бұрын
Ah, the Roy Rogers, a classic 1940s mocktail. Just build over ice combining about 1//2oz (15ml) grenadine to 6oz (180ml) cola and garnish with a cherry. It's a sweet one. However, you can easily balance that sweetness out with a little acidity from a good squeeze of fresh lemon. Even topping the cola off with a little soda water is another option. Happy Trails...
