Well I'm really glad I found your channel and particularly the videos of the J&S 540, as I decided that one of these will be the best bet for my home workshop. I'm off to see one next week. Thanks.

Good Luck. They are great machines.

Well on the positive side you are getting to know the inner workings of your machine really well and this is a great resource for 540 owners. Motor replacement should not be too difficult as it’s flange mounted and holes can be drilled. The usual problem I find with new motors is the shaft lengths are shorter nowadays so mor work is required to make an extension. But I think you will repair it successfully. You mentioned flame straightening and this is used by skilled people like Keith Fenner. I have seen Adam Booth press out the whole rotor shaft and replace it. I have seen motors mounted on the lathe bed and clocked in then the motor itself is run and the shaft is trued up with the cross slide. If it were me I’d use the fixed steady and true the shaft, you could then either sleeve it or the pulley bore. The motor could be sent out for rebalancing but I don’t think the machining will have affected it. Imbalance is likely to come from the rotor casting. But I know you have electronic knowledge so I would be good to see you set up a dynamic balancing rig. Looking forward to seeing the repair whatever way you go.

Thank you. I ended up welding it straight. It was a challenge but it worked out well. Will upload a video soon.

Gday Bart, this is going to be an interesting repair, I’d say it’s been dropped before you got it, I’m keen to see the next instalment, thanks for sharing mate, cheers

Title for this episode: Can This Motor be Saved? (Used to be a column in the paper titled can this marriage be saved and I couldn’t resist.) any chance a replacement motor can be found or do you think you can straighten the shaft well enough to eliminate vibration? That motor has take a beating.

Would be a good title for the next video 😁. Answer I already know. Yes. I managed to weld it straight. Will be in the next video soon.

Those fingers that are bent close to the core are fan blades.

Yes I can imange they are for cooling down the rotor. But I don't think they are bend original. Or it was done for balancing.

@@bartharkemametalworks2299 agree, some people believe those fins are there to balance but from my understanding you have to either add or remove material to correct an imbalance. Bending those fins doesn't increase or decrease weight no is it reasonable to assume the designer to have placed them exactly where they needed to be. But it is very strange how many old motors have bent ones.

@@waltermelyon4300 The material is very soft and easy to bend. I noticed one 'fan' was cut down a bit, I think to remove weight for balancing

I think the motor fell on its shaft. Look for a replacement if possible, the repair will not meet the oem standards. If no replacement is available, then its your last resort to make a fixing try. The wohle drive-train will need a complete overhaul. Man, this will become a highly interesting job. Wish all the best.

Thanks. I already put a new video out yesterday and managed to fix the shaft with welding it straight.

I had one of these machines prior to getting my Tripet. Despite my machine dating from the 1950s and having a plain bearing spindle and also a hard life at Paxman Diesel in Colchester it would produce very good finishes. I had the same problem with the motor mounts. My experience was that Jones and Shipman were utterly useless when it came to advice and even worse where it came to spares (very poor quality). The absolute experts on these machines are Jubilee Machine Tools in Derby. They also have their own line of spare parts which are not only cheaper but of far better quality than J&S.
