Ive tried this several times now and they always end up too big. Ive been using same hook, same yarn,, been following step by step.. same number of stitches.. Dont know what im doing wrong but the toddlers hat always end up fitting me. Way too big. why?? Help pls.@@PriscillasCraftShop

Ok so a gauge of 18dc x 9 rows is 5”x5” using an h hook. If you aren’t getting that then I would suggest going down in hook size. I hope this helps ❤️

For a child size here’s the written version: Row 1- In a magic circle, ch 2 and make 9 dc, join with a sl st into the first dc and ch 2. (9) Row 2- 2 dc in each st (ch 2 does not count as a dc so please work 2 dc into that same space), join with a sl st into the first dc and ch 2. (18) Row 3- 2 dc in one st, dc into the next (2dc, dc) repeat this around, join with a sl st into the first dc and ch 2. (27) Row 4- 2 dc in the first st and dc into the next 2 st’s (2dc, dc, dc) repeat this around, join with a sl st into the first dc and ch 2. Ok so the increase should be the same for both sizes. And the beanie will go like this: 9dc 2dc each st (18dc) 2dc, dc (27dc) 2dc, dc, dc (36 dc) 2dc, dc, dc, dc (45 dc) 2dc, dc, dc, dc, dc (54 dc) Dc (54 dc) 2dc, dc x8 (60 dc) 2dc, dc x9 (66 dc) 2dc, dc x 10 (72 dc) Work that either 17 to 18 rows (whatever one you want)

It honestly depends on the head size. A child size fits my 8 year old and it also fits me. It doesn’t fit my 15 year old. If the child has a bigger head or you don’t want to snug then after the last increase here I would increase one more time (2 double crochet, double crochet x 10) for a total of 72 double crochets.

Are you counting the ch2 as a dc? Also keeping it with your counts is very important. Time consuming but important.

Yes! Some people find the magic ring easier but others find the ch 3 version of it easier.

On row 7 there’s no increase. Sometimes it’s easy to just add an extra bc you can forget that it’s one dc in each st. Maybe that’s where you went wrong? Just go back down the rows and count your sts so that you can pinpoint where you might have an extra or are missing one.

You would work another row of increase. So after you make the 2 double crochet with 9 double crochets (for a total of 66 double crochet) you then make the next row (2 double crochet, double crochet in the next 10 stitches) for a total of 72 double crochet. You then repeat that until row 17 (18 for bigger heads) let me know if this helps.

If the 72 dc fits then I would do the rest of the hat in rounds of 72 dc (so one dc in each st and join with a slst) if you still need it bigger then you do one more increase (2dc, dc in the next 11 stitches) and then continue that as one dc in each st until you reach the last round.

When doing the ear flaps, if you added the extra increase row earlier, is it still as 25 count for the ear flap on the other side?
