I was a Braves fan that absolutely hated the Yankees, but even I have to say that Posada and Pettitte deserve more HOF consideration than they've gotten. That being said, I have no idea what the BBWA was smoking when they allowed Williams to fall off the ballot. In a stacked lineup filled with stars (O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Jeter, Posada) aging veterans/former stars who still had something left in the tank (Chili Davis, Tim Raines, Darryl Strawberry) and some solid players who had some good years (Knoblauch, Scott Brosius, etc), Williams was the only guy I feared. Williams was the guy that drove that Yankee offense, especially in the post-season. Bernie may be the most underrated player of the last 30 years. He should absolutely be in the HOF.

I forgot who said it first but the core 4 got their break more or less after the strike. Bernie was there before that and was often seen as the test. I dont like any of those name core four fab five. Posada wasnt ready in 96 but they always slide him in there like if a sept call up batting under .100 These nicknames blur the lines of the legacies of Yankees. Makes Mattingly and Williams also less important to our overall history. Posada was important in 09 but a non factor in 96. Williams retired in 06 so couldnt be a factor. 2009 is too far away from the dynasty of late 90s. So we replace Bernie for Posada forever just for a cool nickname and to further push Bernie legacy down hell even Paul Oneill got his jersey retired before Bernie and he was an all star for Reds way before he got here. Bernie was a Yankee lifer and retired with the MLB record for postseason home runs runs scored and RBI. Mlb doesnt respect Bernie the way they should because the Yankees never respected him as much as Jeter Pettite O”Neill Clemens Cone Wells etc on and on

Well said. Bernie has been underrated/underappreciated because he was quiet and consistent (or "boring"). He wasn't Jeter (the guy that every woman wanted, and every guy wanted to be), Mariano (the GOAT at his position), or someone like Jorge Posada & Paul O'Neill (who wore their emotions on their sleeves). What is true, however, is that he was the team's best position player (if not the best player, period) during that dynasty. PS: The 1 thing I disagree with is that his defense is part of the reason he's been underrated/underappreciated. By that argument, Jeter should be ranked much lower than he is.

What changed is Steinbrenner getting suspended for 3 years. When he returned, he was still an impatient blowhard (& there were more examples of that besides what was mentioned in this video). Before the '96 season (Jeter's first full year), Gene Michael had to talk him out of trading Mariano Rivera to the Mariners for some shortstop named Felix Fermin. (Who's Felix Fermin? My point exactly.). In '99, Andy Pettitte wasn't pitching well, so Steinbrenner was ready to ship him off (but Joe Torre and Mel Stottlemyre had to talk him out of it). Hell, he hired Torre in the 95/96 off-season, & then tried to get Buck Showalter to come back during that same off-season. The Yankees won in spite of Steinbrenner

No player hit bigger in clutch playoffs spots than Bernie Williams for the Yankees. He hit some of the most important home runs in Yankee history during the stretch of 1996-2003. In fact during the 1996 Divisional and American Divisional Championships, if it werent for Bernie Williams, the Yankees most likely wouldnt have won either of those series. Divisional Round: Texas: 4G 7H 5R 3HR 5RBI .467 AVG American Round: Baltimore: 5G 6R 2HR 6RBI .474 AVG Texas Rangers: Game 3 series tied 1-1, Williams homered in the top of the first inning, then robbed Rusty Greer in the bottom half. His ninth-inning sacrifice fly tied a game the Yankees would eventually win. They would win the series the next day. Williams also hit two home runs in Game 4 to clinch the series. Baltimore Orioles: In Game 1, Williams would hit a game winning 11th inning home run off Randy Meyers to win the lead off game. In game 3 in Baltimore, Williams FBI siingle ties the game in the 8th inning, in which the Yanks scored 4 runs to win the game giving them a 2-1 series lead. In game 4, it was Bernie Williams's two-run home run in the top of the first off Rocky Coppinger that gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead, which they never relinquished giving them a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Bernie Williams belongs in the HOF. Just look at his post season stats. Yes, he had lots of post-season opportunity. But he took advantage of those opportunities. He was one of the best clutch hitters in Yankees history. Opposing managers feared him. The player who was most key to that Yankees dynasty was Mariano Rivera.

Apparently I met Bernie Williams when I was like 3 years old after Yankees-Brewers game at County Stadium. I do have a signed baseball from him so I guess that’s cool!

I have a book about the final season of Yankee Stadium, which includes a page that he signed (as well as a picture of him signing it & a certificate of authenticity)

He was a professional.. somehow that didn't support that he was a star despite numbers to support that.. his consistency today would be lauded.. salute Mr Williams🤌🏾

Bernie's numbers don't show his true value. The 90s Yankee dynasty was packed with lifetime 300 hitters who also had power... Not homerun hitters at least in the 90s. They constantly took counts deep and fouled off tons of pitches. They wore out the other teams pitchers no matter how good they where the Yanks forced there pitch counts up quickly. Especially in a 7 game series pitchers wore down towards the end of a series. Plus seeing all those pitches ups the odds the pitcher makes a mistake. If every player is going deep in counts the probability of a pitching mistake became much higher with each batter. Bernie was a switch hitter who was beyond clutch. No matter the stars the Yanks had Bernie always batted cleanup and had the highest average on the team with names like Boggs, Jeter, Mattingly, ONeill... legendary hitters for average and career 3000 hit players the Yankees had was astounding. Despite them all Bernie was the best at going deep into counts, spoiling pitches, and getting huge clutch hits on mistake pitches he created by being patient and fouling pitches off. Being a switch hitter you could not match up against him and his fielding was off the hook. Bernie's patience at the plate and his fielding not only made him great but it filtered to help his team mates. Bailing a pitcher out with a diving catch, or wearing out the pitcher so much the guys batting after get huge hits. Bernie to me was one of the most valuable players ever despite how his stats looked. He was not only a great player but he was great for the team. He made the whole team better and increased the winning probability with him on the field

Hell yes. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. Not a flashy player. But did his job. Clutch in the playoffs.

Bernie was a smart guy. During the regular season we'd laugh as he gave up on balls the moment his cleats touched the warning track. But then in the post-season the guy was all of the wall like superman. But that kept him playing 145+ games a year while the "stud" center fielders would wind up with concussions and broken bones from crashing into the wall in regular season games. And in 1996 he without question carried them to the World Series with his bat.

Very good argument that he is the most underrated Yankee of all-time, and is likely one of the most underrated players of the modern era. The only real arguments against him are that his counting stats weren't enough, because his peak ended rather abruptly, and that his defense was mediocre based on metrics (although he was a 3x gold glove winner). That being said, I always thought that being the best offensive player on the greatest dynasty in the modern era over the course of 8/9 years, retiring as one of the greatest playoff hitters of all time, winning 4 WS should be enough to push him over the HOF line. Honestly, the 2,000 hit & .800 OPS stat for centerfielders was surprising to me and bolsters the argument. When you're on a list of centerfielders that excludes Mantle, Puckett, and the 19 other HOFers, you deserve to be seriously considered for the HOF. My recollection is that he was included on less than 5% of HOF ballots in his final year of eligibility, so he somehow never even got close .
