It's a foul, because the batter was still fully within the batter's box. If the ball had hit the batter while he is out of the box, then he would be out.

The fielder was making a play on the ball. Obstruction (not interference) is the call when a fielder interferes with the runner when he doesn't have the ball and is not making a play on it.

Baseball as a sport has a lot of down time so in my experience it was just something to occupy yourself with while you’re waiting for a ball to be hit out to you, as someone with anxiety I found it helped me focus too. My experience is solely with gum and seeds though.
