Wish I'd known about this... I went gung-ho with some glassblock mortar that I had left over. It did great, for the most part, but a few places weren't able to dry completely.... so, I'd get these palm sized puddles of water and sometimes larger, on rainy days. I waited for a dry-spell and ended up using epoxy to fill a few spots, then several coats of dry-lok... and I used a propane torch to quick-dry a few layers of that paint.

Good video. This stuff works well and I have used it many times. Just remember to wear gloves, clean out and ensure that the crack or hole is at least 3/4 inch, mix it to a putty (play dough consistency or 4 to 1 water to powder) and stuff it in the hole. It will expand and fill it out just like Great Stuff does. You can also paint it later. If the hole is really deep, you can put great stuff in the bottom, push it WAY down and put this on top to seal it. I've done it different ways. That said, nice show-me video. That said, for some people, if it is not the pvc pipe, find out the problem causing the leak before repairing.

Hi! Thank you for the video! Not sure if you're still responding to comments but yesterday, we noticed water leaking into our basement. We found a crack and wanting to seal it. We are hoping this works. Would you suggest sealing the crack from the outside with the cement (we can dig to find it!) or would inside be okay? Also, do we need to apply liquid rubber after we apply cement? Thank you again for the great video!

@jedblack
@jedblack 5 жыл бұрын
That is hydrostatic water pressure -- you can try with products like Drylok but eventually it will fail if the pressure is high enough. The real way and only proper way to deal with hydrostatic pressure is to relive the pressure with a interior french drain system, or external(larger project). Can't hurt to try with drylok and see how far you get.

Hydraulic cement won't burn your skin. Gloves are not needed. Use a grinder to open the cracks or use a cold chisel to a square channel or a reverse v shape. Pack it in and let dry. You might want to mark the entry points with a permanent marker when it rains to make it easier to know what part of the wall is failing. Pretty much follow the directions. Also it doesnt work very well if the crack is actively leaking. Wait until it is not raining and the water table is low.

@@leonardhoffman9140 Ive been playing with cement, lime and all kinds of types of similar materials, since I was a child and they all can irritate human tissue, some people may feel less reactions and that may depend on specific factors, (length of time on skin, or thick skin or how damp the material is) but these are all chemicals which react when water is added and its not healthy by any means and avoiding direct contact is best. Preventative measures is better than having dried or damaged skin....I have had stucco on my arm for a whole work day of plastering and that was the only time that I actually saw a chemical burn during my 20+ years of working and being around masonry, and sometimes some bleached skin from cement splashes on my legs or arms. But I have seen many painful skin issues due to the abuse of work, dampness, and exposure to chemical materials.

Hi, I have a problem with my old garage. It's made of concrete panels with some kind of sealant between them, but when it rains water leaks through the joints at the bottom. It's not a severe leak, but after a whole raining day it's enough to form puddles in the garage. I've tried both self expanding foam and PU sealant, but none of them worked (the PU sealant didn't even stick to the concrete even though it was dry and -as much as I could- clean and it was supposed to be specific for that job. I could remove it easily with my hands). Do you think this would fix it? The gap between the panels is around half an inch with an overlapping "lip", I don't know if it would penetrate deep enough. I have no access to the exterior side as it's been covered with soil by the neighbour. Thanks!!

I never liked building walls with sheet rock close to the concrete foundation. Once the foundation walls are covered you can see nothing. If a crack develops and have a leak, you have to open up the wall here and there. I would recommend building your finished walls 2 feet away from the outside wall around the entire perimeter of the basement. Yes, you lose some square footage, but you have peace of mind knowing that you can always inspect the health of your foundation. And if you do have a leak, you'll be able to spot it easily with out ripping walls out.
@gr8dvd
@gr8dvd 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but 2’ perimeter gap is idiotic…. unnecessary, colossal waste provided you have 1-2 years before finishing to detect a problem, if any. A foundation crack is a symptom of some underlying problem like settling or hydro-static pressure (from poor water mgt.), etc. Patching a crack without addressing the underlying problem is asking for further trouble whether you gap the finished wall or keep tight to perimeter.

There is a legal obligation required to disclose these sorts of issues prior to closing. Both seller and realtor could be liable for repairs and damages. I have a poured concrete slab foundation wall in a 1950 house. One specific corner (it is a downspout corner) has developed a small leak. It is not enough to cause destruction, but the carpet gets mildly to moderately wet, it spreads about 6-7" from the corner, and it is enough to warp the paneling and cause light surface mold and attract spiders to the location. The wall is finished with panelboard and baseboard trim and I do not want to have to pry it completely off or otherwise damage it because it is 1979 vintage and cannot be matched or replaced if broken/ damaged. The ceiling is a drop ceiling and I lifted the corner panel and checked the top corner of the wall and it is not leaking there. I assume it is leaking somewhere near the bottom because it has been raining nonstop for about 7 hours and the water just now started. The house has had history of leaking where the poured wall meets the floor in other spots of the basement back in the 1980s that were spot-patched with some kind of black rubber compound. The leak has been an ongoing problem for years, however tilling the flowerbed in that area and planting a 4-5 foot tall Rose Of Sharon bush in that location in 2018 has greatly decreased the water coming in, so that might be a helpful clue. My idea was to just lift away the baseboard and saw open a small area of paneling behind the baseboard enough to see the joint and apply a sealer or patch (this is assuming its leaking from floor level). What is the best way to tackle this?

Basement Finishing Man I forgot to add the corrugated pipe is below the concrete foundation footer in clay dirt. My thought is sooner or later it's going to just wash out being below the footer. I built my home as a novice not knowing how to do anything. I paid a guy to do it wrong.. A terrible feeling but all I can do now is try to patch it up.

Thanks for the video! I have this exact problem, but in my case the pipe is horizontal and not vertical. Our builders drilled through the concrete for the water main, and didn't use a conduit pipe. The seal they did around the pipe was shoddy, and so we get leaking of water in to my (unfinished) basement whenever there's a large storm and accumulation of water. My question is this: The pipe/hole on the outside of the foundation is buried very deep. Am I going to be ok to just use this method you've shown on the inside around the pipe to stop the leak, or will I need to dig out on the exterior and seal it from that side as well?

hydroboy35th I know you posted this awhile ago, but an injection seal is a much better solution than hydraulic cement. If done properly, it will fix the leak for good bc it actually fills the crack in all the way to the ground outside, keeping h2o from getting in. Hydraulic cement is only a temporary solution bc it only covers the surface of the crack and eventually the h2o will break through. Also the hydraulic cement tends to crack just like the original foundation wall did. I do injection seals for a living and about 60% of the cracks i fix, have been previously repaired with hydraulic cement. As long as h2o can still get in the crack, it will eventually push it's way through.

I used the hydraulic cement last night to fix a new leak in our basement. SW Ohio received an insane amount of rain yesterday. Praise the Lord it was on the unfinished side and we saw the water before it hit the finished part. If it's just a crack, the instructions advise you to chisel out concrete so there's room to pack in the cement. Just skim coating over the crack isn't going to cut it. I had to chisel out approx 3 ft of a crack (made it about 3/4" wide x 3/4" deep) while it was actively leaking. It definitely seemed counterproductive at first. When I started packing in the hydraulic cement, it worked right away. I started at the top of where I chiseled and went all the way to the floor. Checked it a few times since last night and it's still dry. Since it's on the unfinished side, I'm just going to leave it and keep an eye on it. Time will tell if it's a permanent solution to that crack.

I've been throwing around the idea of turning a corner of my basement into a 3000 to 5000 gallon pond. I would use this on some cracks and the corners and then I would make a small slant in the floor about one inch every three feet for dunk drainage and then I would mixed together two ingredients that creates toxic gas while curing to waterproof it. Anyways I'm not going to do that but I do you want to make some sort of pond.

Yes coat all the block walls with a product called DryLok...awesome way to "damp-proof" masonry block unit basement walls.
