I bought two of these Baseus power adapters based highly on your extremely clear and informative review of it, and comparing it to other adapters you have reviewed. No other reviewers come close to the amount of detail you go to. Honestly though, I couldn't see the point in subscribing to your channel because hey, how often am I going to buy a power adapter, but your reviews are so good and honest and expose the real facts, that I subscribed because they are just entertaining to watch in themselves. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next review! P.S. a review of some wireless charging stations and more power banks would be welcome, too.

@AllThingsOnePlace2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have a small mountain of adapters awaiting testing. The main way to check silicon versus gallium nitride is to look at something like a laptop brick from a couple years ago versus these newer USB C bricks. Basically, if they have similar technology in terms of topology they perform the same and really they aren't even much smaller just different form factors. The ones that do get really small tend to leave out things that improve power quality like filtering and power factor correction.

Between the requirement (DOE VI) and the measured value not a lot, roughly $3 versus $2 per year of electricity cost average in the USA as of 2022. Lower power adapters have lower requirements so something more like $0.5 for idle power. Electricity is very inexpensive in the USA though. In europe this could be a quite a lot more per year.

I throw my watch or phone and laptop all plugged and unplugged randomly throughout the day (USB Side not mains side) and night and they all are always charged and haven't had any problems. They do carry the ETL or Intertek safety listing, a little less known than the UL safety listing but tested to the same quality standards (supposedly is there ever a guarantee?). I am not going to say they are safest thing out there, the safest option is never use anything electronic ever, but they do put effort into making sure that the current products on the market have safety listings, they put more effort in than other companies I have seen. The certificates are available publicly on the Intertek page also if you dig a little.

Thanks for all the work you do with the chargers. I've been looking for one that offers enough power and for multiple devices. I am not sure on a specific travel adapter. But here are some tips: I recommend something with proper shutters on the plug, no open holes. They make them with safety listings so see if the adapter has some kind of listing. I recommend a plug/adapter for the country you are going to as opposed to the multiway adapters. It sounds like something for a future video, perhaps whenever I get around to the next round of travel adapters to cover just adapters too.

Great review and details! Any chance to know if it works with a Dell XPS 15 charging it at more than 65W or the Dell limits it too?
@AllThingsOnePlace2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the laptop will limit the charge speed to what it can handle. If the max. charge rate is 65W then that is all it will pull. I think these laptops use Dell's proprietary format and not PD 3.0 so probably hit or miss on support unfortunately. It is annoying companies make it hard to figure this stuff out. Note, that's the thing under the newer analyzer which still works and is in specification but doesn't have a 5 mA range required by the IEC 62301 standby power measurement standard. Yes, I could make a custom current transformer, or shunt, to make it have a 5 mA range. I looked around a lot and the lower priced units don't have the sensitivity to get accurate measurements. THD+N is fairly simple to measure but if you specifically want to look at harmonic content then you need a high sample rate and a high bit depth for analysis.

Old chargers, or non-PD chargers don't renegotiate. Then on the newer side, there are a few options out there that will not renegotiate until a certain number of devices are plugged in. The new 250W Anker lets you program one of the ports to not renegotiate. Single port chargers excluded, although technically, any PD device is continuously renegotiating, even if the message is, yes I'm still here and I still need power. But yes, the vast majority renegotiate on plugs and unplugs. The question is how fast can they accomplish this and how many other ports does it disturb.

What's the difference between this and the desktop version? And which one will be better to use as a charger for a gaming laptop?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
The desktop version is a bit newer, a little better at negotiation with more devices, a little more efficient, and has lower idle power usage. So, in general a better power adapter. The downside is the non-removeable cable which over a decent amount of time may become trouble if you move it a lot. I drag the wall version all over the place and keep the desktop version in place. The limitation is 100W, as long as your laptop is good with 100W these will both work. Some gaming laptops use proprietary connections, voltages or currents and will not work with any non-OEM USB C power brick or still use a barrel connection so things to research.

Sup! Thanks a lot for your in-depth reviews on such a niche topic! Your videos are always a joy to watch. I bought this Baseus 100W adapter on your recommendation but for some reason it has some trouble charging my devices. I have this problem with both my phone, smartwatch, and power bank where it'll say it's charging for a few seconds and then disconnect, permanently. Happens even if it's the only device plugged in. Usually restarting the device resolves it, though sometimes it takes restarting it multiple times even. Replugging the cable or the adapter generally doesn't seem to help, it just disconnects after a few seconds again. Something wrong with how the power is being negotiated between the device and the adapter maybe? Or just a faulty adapter? Just curious if you know anything about this.

Yeah, any behavior like that is certainly not normal. I think Baseus support is not amazing but send a short video or picture of it misbehaving and hopefully they can send a new one. Question. Why is it when using a USBA to USBC connector using a Quick Charge port to a phone capiable of Quick Charge, that it charges slowly when the usb cable is one direction, but flip it and it goes to fast charging? There is no way to tell unless you mark it for the specific device you are charging. Are there different cables to get that don't do this? An adapter? Is this a limitation of USBA to USBC?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
So, a USB A port doesn't have the CC pins which are extra pins used to negotiate with USB C PD protocols. There is probably some issue with hand shaking when those pins are missing. Some devices won't charge at all with out them. QC (2 or 3) does not use those pins so technically should be able to pass from any compatible charger to any compatible device or chip. It sounds like a device specific issue where either the charger, cable, or the device doesn't have both sides of the connector populated with data lines.

How does the power factor effect the user Experience. After a lot of research I found out that the Power factor multiplied by the KVA is the Actual Power and this multiplied by the efficiency results in the work that is done with the given input Power. But in your test Values the power factor is sometimes around 0.5 and for my current understand this should mean with a 65w Power adapter that I would need 130w to power a device with 65w. But this wouldn´t overline with the Efficiency of the products and so I`m really confused which effect the power factor really has for the user. I would appreaciate any answers that could make this a bit more understandable a lot.
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
It is a bit more nuanced than that. In trying to make it simple… VA is the volts times amps, this number being higher than the real power in watts means the current and voltage waveforms aren’t the same shape. This creates losses in wiring and transformers but in residential you don’t pay for anything except the resistive component of losses. Industrial users do pay for that poor power factor in full. In residential it ends up being an effect on the order of 8% if all your devices have non-PFC versus PFC power supplies. My efficiency numbers don’t take into account the resistive losses so non-pfc 65w adapters are a bit worse than they appear efficiency wise. Lower wattage adapters are about the same since the current is very low. Hope this helps a little.
@irondebiman6367 Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Thanks a lot for your explanation. As far as I understood it the problem is that we need more current and more current equals less efficiency because of increased resistance and therefore more heat for non pfc devices.
@MrTorexko Жыл бұрын
At what voltage do you measure the "Power Used" and calculate "Efficiency"? Always at the highest possible (20V)?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
I test at various voltages. So, the efficiency at 10W would be at 5V out, 25W would be at a 12 or 15V, 50+ watts is always at 20V or higher. If you always test at 20V the efficiency would be a little lower but in general if you are using 10W it is likely a 5V or 9V device. In general when you turn on any PPS/QC/PD mode above 5V the adapter will change to a mode where it uses about 0.5 watts more.
@MrTorexko Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace I see... So when I want to compare efficiency of different adapters, I need to test all of them at the same output percentage (their actual output power / their max output power). Testing all at the same output, for example 10W (5V 2A), wouldn't be a fair comparison, right? And another question: does voltage affect efficiency? Would a 5V 3A output have different efficiency than a 15V 1A?

So, interesting issue I've been facing. I bought this charger a few weeks ago and used it to charge an old tablet and my phone, no issues there. Fast forward to yesterday, and I tried to use it for the first time on my own laptop because it was already plugged in to the outlet and it felt convenient. First I noticed that the laptop would 'shiver' or feel weird when I ran my finger along anywhere on the metal surface. Then, I noticed that the touchpad was lagging and not working properly, specially when trying to use 4 finger gestures. I then unplugged the laptop and waited for a few seconds: that trackpad lag was gone, and the laptop wouldn't shiver when I ran my fingers along it. I then tried the original power brick that came with the laptop and all the issues I listed weren't present. From what I've read it might have something to do with electrical interference/grounding?, is it not grounded?, is that dangerous to my devices?, could it damage the trackpad or any part of my laptop?. I'm in europe and use the european plug version of the charger btw. Thanks.

Yes, this thing sucks at leakage current, the thing you are experiencing is a little AC voltage capacitively coupling to the output through the insides. This is a new test I am adding for this very reason! This charger is fine in the US but on EU voltages it does absolutely terrible! I tested some OEM adapters (Apple, Dell, HP) and they perform much better. So, being earthed can mitigate the problem, it can shunt some of the leakage current to ground, we are talking microamps. It isn't harmful levels but it is noticeable and annoying. I will have a list of buzz or no buzz soon.

I would like to connect the deck with a 90degree male to 2 female type-c splitter adapter to the powerbank and the 100W charger. -Is it going to work without harming anyone or damaging any of the aforementioned devices in the short and long term alike? Thank you for reading through my excessively long lines! :)
@AllThingsOnePlace2 жыл бұрын
Hello! That is a great question. For power delivery to work the 'cc' line of the USB C device has to connect to only one thing. A basic Y cable probably won't even connect this wire which means everything will only run at 5 volts. If there are two devices the data will be corrupt so this also won't work, probably only 5V or you could at worse have one device negotiate 20V and have a second device connected that can't handle that and then damage would happen. So, the maximum charging speed from device to device will probably only be 15 watts. I don't think you will do any damage, but there is a small chance, most likely the adapter or power bank won't deliver the power that the devices are capable of. There are 'powered' Y cables which I will have in my round 4 of USB cables, but those also are kind of terrible. The best solution as of now is one device per USB C cable end. The power bank shouldn't be left plugged in all the time anyway.

Yeah, these compact adapters get hot. Basically all of them do this. It comes down to dissipation of power. If the casing is small and it has to dissipate 10 - 12 watts of power at full load it is going to get hot, getting that number down, and therefore increasing the efficiency would require quite a lot of changes to the power adapter and this probably isn't going to happen for a long time.

Yeah, it appears so. I've used it for a long time and it has been the most reliable for me. Everyone has a different experience since the mix of devices is so different. The switch I am not 100% sure on, some research would be required to figure out if it supports whatever protocol that uses.

@AllThingsOnePlace Is the Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W safe for the Nintendo Switch Lite?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
@@mechaxjoe Based on the smaller battery (in the switch lite), I can't expect it to charge all that fast. So, I am assuming it is fine.
@mechaxjoe Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace so using a Power Bank that can go up to 65w or 100w won't hurt the switch lite? Because the Switch Lite's internal battery can regulate how many watts it receives?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
@@mechaxjoe Again, not an expert on the device, but from what I can find, it should only charge at the slower charging mode available on a power bank or adapter. The adapter won't shove more watts in just because they are available.

If I charge a laptop that supports 100W with this and have a phone charging cable in it as well, but not connected to a phone, will it charge at 100W or 65W?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
A 60 watt cable is effectively like not plugging any thing in, so that won't do anything, same with a USB A cable. A 100+ watt cable or a lightning cable which both have chips in them may behave differently. I just tested it to find out and the 100W+ cable didn't trip it but the lightning cable did and forced the lower power mode on the first port.
@Mech0z Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Thank you, but thats too bad, we have iphones and we dont want to unplug cables whenever we are not using them, so maybe should get a bigger wattage version then.
@Mech0z Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Oh and I dont presume it matters if the lightning cable is USB A to lightning or USB C to lightning?
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
@@Mech0z Hmm. I only tried the USB C to lightning cable. I expect it to behave the same though since the lightning connector will put some load on the connector but it is something else to test. Maybe I can make a short demonstrating this.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Your probably right, I just wondered since you have mentioned that some charges do not renegotiate when connecting stuff to usb-a, but do so for usb-c

How about Mcdodo 100w (CH-810), Mcdodo 120w (CH-076), and new Mcdodo 65w GaN 5 charger (CH-155)?

The 65W (and smaller adapters) I have and will be getting reviewed soon. I don't have the larger ones yet. They are on the list though! Thanks for the suggestions.

I bought this charger, but im dissapointed. It does charge well but it gets so hot. Also my phone battery gets very hot while using this charger. This doesnt happend with original charger or another 65w charger i've been using for a while. I tried on different phones, same thing. After 10-15 minutes, both charger and phone battery gets very hot.
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Depending on the phone model it may use a reasonable amount of power, but still even at 45W SFC 2 Samsung charging the adapter shouldn't get hot. The phone might get hot since that is a lot of watts into the phone. You can turn the power level down in the phone in software though. I have not had that experience though, my charger generally stays pretty cool at
