Hey Jeff, really common issue with Zs. Picture this. 70s Guy admiring his huge John Holmes mustache in the rear view mirror, ashes his smoke out the window, singes his paisley body shirt and burns a hole in his rayon flares, looks up and it's too late, smashes up the back end of Valiant Safari station wagon. The nose of the Z slides under the rear of the Valiant pushing the front of the bonnet, both headlight buckets and support panels plus the two corners of the radiator support panel down. That's why you have the crease in the panels to both sides of the radiator opening. You need to push this up from the top of the radiator support panel not the base. More than likely the rails are also bent down slightly but the very front of the Z is extremely weak and bends easily so hopefully the rails are still OK.

really enjoyed this video. once again find it so helpful to see process by which you tackle challenge. it is a lesson to me about body work - that the pieces are connected. also applaud your wiliness to cut bumper to make fit, i would not have thought of that. Out takes from mrs.jeff are fun, perhaps she should try same approach to her regular piece.

Jeff, those front bumpers are a real problem once they've been bent out of shape to any degree. I know when i restored my 240Z & then my wife backed into the car! - the bumper was never the same again! That's a very clever idea putting in small cuts to reshape the bumper. Good work! Tiger.

Always liked the approach of "if i have to throw it anyway lets try everything on it", when i was really young (like 10 or less) the best times were when things broke, like the washing machine . My mom saying "we're gonna change it" was my GO BEAST MODE for me to open it and trying figuring out how it worked. The first lesson is that everything cut inside inside man created objects xD (almost 30 and i still have scars on my hands but was worth it) Also may i suggest you to buy a laser level (i didn't watch all the porsche videos so you maybe already use it) , even a cheap one should help you out a lot, even if most of the times what pleases the eyes is good enough or even better

11:00 - Jeff that radiator support panel has been bashed in pretty hard. That's why nothing aligns. You really need to get it on a chassis rig and have it pulled back out correctly based on datum points of a good shell. On my car #150 the rear had had a light rear end impact which has done similar to the box section at the rear and I need to get it pulled out again. The front has also had a light impact (not nearly as bad as yours, but even so I've had a hell of a time getting my bonnet alignment right), I refuse to twist and turn panels until I know I'm working from a good datum point on my car. Otherwise you'll just chase your tail all day long!
@gav240z
@gav240z 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry Jeff 13:30 I commented before finishing your video... I think you've reached the same conclusion. Take it to a place that has a 'car-o-liner" rig and get it right. I plan to use plumb bob's to check for squareness of my shell and get it sorted because it's a massive PITA constantly trying to re-align stuff only to discover something else is now out!
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
From what I have seen, the rails are good. It looks like the bonnet impact has just tweaked down the two side nose mounts slightly, which is throwing everything off. I will think about it, but I think I can just re-adjust the mounting points as it is and get it all lined up again.

Any way of borrowing a mate's car for a week or 2 and get some measurements and sight lines to compare. It would probably help the front panel alignment issues more than Google. Happy Australia Day and keep the good work.

gav240z en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alloy_wheel Aluminium + Magnesium = Alloy wheel. ? I'd love for you to elaborate on your comment. I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to wheels.
@gav240z
@gav240z 6 жыл бұрын
FlatBlackRat from the link you quoted... However, pure magnesium wheels are no longer produced, being found only on classic cars. Pure magnesium suffers from many problems. Vintage magnesium rims were very susceptible to pitting, cracking and corrosion. Magnesium in bulk is hard to ignite but pure magnesium wheels can be ignited by a burning tire or by prolonged scraping of the wheel on the road surface following a puncture. Those wheels shown on the Z432-R are Kobe Seiko Magnesium alloys (very light) I have 3 (missing a couple), found a few but have suffered the above issues with age.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I can't believe Wikipedia would lead me astray! ;) I though Aluminium wheels sounded odd, but if you scroll down to the 432R section that is what someone has written. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_S30 I really struggled to find details about the 432R. There is not much info out there.
