I was always told that as a D-lineman you should replace their downed hand with your first step. Here, you speak about gaining ground with your first step my stepping over the lone of cones. Can both these things be true in certain situations?

my son plays defensive end,, What is a way to tell if the offense is going to run or pass before they hike the ball?

if the tackle kicks their feet back it’s a pass if the tackle comes to attack u it’s a run.

Before the snap is usually hard to tell. Down and distance can give you a hint on what they’re more likely to do. Pay attention to the OL as well. If they have their hands planted on the ground and they’re leaning forward it’s usually a run or play action

But like the other comment said right when the ball is snapped if the tackle steps back it’s a pass. Just always tell your son to stay aggressive. as long as he’s in the backfield applying pressure and containing the outside he’s doing his job

Just need to watch film and learn the scheme of the other team. Need to learn their tendencies. More importantly, your boys need to learn their job through and through to bring comfortability in their position

How I coach my defensive end is to close the outside edges and force the run back inside the trenches. Unless they have a man in a pass scheme infront of them, then they need to make the first contact and hold that man up as much as possible behind the line of scrimmage to stop the possible outside run
