I've seen many reactors criticize defenders and goalies for not stopping Messi or other superstars. Please realize these are some of the best footballers in the world you're talking about. With any sport that includes a goal, one of the best ways for the goalie to reduce the likelihood of the attacker to score a goal is to cut down the angle available to the attacker by moving forward. If he stays back, the attacker can shoot the ball almost anywhere in that huge goal space the goalie is trying to cover. Not much likelihood to stop that. But imagine if the goalie is able to advance within one foot of the football. It's almost impossible for the attacker to shoot the ball past the goalkeeper to make it to the goal! Two ways attackers deal with that. Dribble the ball past the goalie, shoot the ball before the goalie closed the angles too much, or lob the ball above the goalie.

Messi is unique. There are only so many things feet can do. I've seen many superstar players do the same things with various skill. I've never seen anyone do the things Messi does. The difference is his brain. He knows the next 3 moves he wants to do ahead of time and therefore he can execute all 3 moves in the same time his defenders are making one move. At the same time he sees the movement of the opponents' legs as if they were going in slow motion, so by the time they are about to make their one move, he can already have decided that he will send the ball through their legs that are about to get wide enough to pass through them. Including goalies. He's the most talented player I've ever seen, truly the one and only GOAT so far.
