I'm a 53 year old drummer who has plunked around on a bass I have had sitting around for 30 years. I live in a small town, we got more drummers than bassists, so I am upping my bass game for more opportunities to play music. I have been working through your online lessons this month, thank you so much for posting these. My music theory has increased exponentially with your clear and simple explanations.

Opened my eyes. You taught us G major so if we play in a different key we adjust the notes In the scale accordingly? The finger patterns would be the same? Thanks for the lesson.
@stevekonbass2 жыл бұрын
Yep. So lets say you were playing C major. The Ionian would be CDEFGABC. Then the Dorian would be DEFGABC... and so on. Whatever mode you play in C major would have the C major notes in it.

After watching this video I was suprised to see you play all the mode patterns over the Gmaj7 and Am7 backing track. There must be some patterns that go better with other chords than others. Are there any rules other that just playing any pattern you want ?
@stevekonbass Жыл бұрын
If it sounds good/interesting, I say play it. Modal is used a lot in improvisational jazz music and as an example, playing in the Mixolydian mode over that G maj7 just gives it a different flair rather than just staying in Ionian. Experiment a little with it when I switch to guitar in the video. If you're interested in jazz Ed Friedland has a few good books out.

Awesome lesson, probably the best one at actually showing how to put this to use. Question though: When you're playing in G major but using the Dorian mode, is it called G Dorian or A Dorian. I've seen it called both depending which video I'm watching. Thanks
@stevekonbass6 ай бұрын
Good question. It would be A Dorian.
