Other than that it's wonderful to see your work. And that you acknowedge that you learn as you go along. A true master will never stop learning.

If you think about it. “The mitochondria is the power house of the cell” is a lot like using a flexing motion. No complaint here. Love the videos.

Nice video. I wonder about something maybe you could explain in the next video. Could you shove the mandrel through the entire length of the slide and then roll out or burnish the tube on the dent/bend part so that the atoms in the metal (or whatever they are) realign? With my very minimal/hobbyist experience, this is how I would have thought to fix this. Explain why that wouldn’t work.

Nice job! It's actually fairly easy to see the dents and bends on the video, perhaps moreso than in person. It was really interesting watching you pull those bends out. That got me wondering. What if you applied some firm pressure on the two mandrels to encourage the tube to bend, and then gently tapped on the tube at the point of the bend with a soft hammer? I wonder if the strain in the tubing would encourage the metal to move as you tapped on it.

Great skill! I wasn't expecting it to work so well after the repair. I don't know if I just imagined it but I think you were surprised too! I probably shouldn't say this as a trombonist, but damn, that poor old slide works better than the one on my instrument!

Art, I'm really enjoying this rebuild. Now that the tubes are straight, could you draw a dent ball through the tube to make it round again at the dent location?

Thank You!, the stuck spit slide-third valve tuning slide, on my Bach Stradivarius is FREE. I’m certain the entire instrument is happy as now everything works much better, 😉

If you had two bench vises opening parallell to the edge of your work bench you could line up the two mandrels. Then just push where the bend is. The mandrels would only give just a little since they would support each other. Like that the risk of overdoing it would be minimal. Said the armchair technician ;-)

This series was one of the most interesting refurbishment vids I’ve watched. Great job. I’m subbed and will enjoy more videos I’m sure. P.S. I don’t even play an instrument.

Im amazed how much better that slid after the straightening. I didnt think there was much hope at the start of this series but this thing looks like its going to end up playing great. Testament to patience To get around dealing with the gap from the stocking on the granite, why not set the inner tube on the block so the stocking hangs off the end? That way only the narrower portion of tubing is touching the stone and you dont have the eyeball the gap. Or am I missing something?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop4 жыл бұрын
Normally that would work but the bend is too close to the stocking.

Your trombone repair reminded me of when I bought a mouthpiece a little too big and it didn't fit my trombone, so I decided to drill a mouthpiece hole with a tapered bit and sandpaper wrapped around it. At some point the bit grabbed and I pulled out some shattered and corroded pipe out of there.. I guess that was the venturi.. Well, anyway, I continued sanding it and eventually the mouthpiece fitted well, the trombone plays well too so I guess I lucked out.

Right where the kink is, i wrap the tube with a piece of leather about 1 1/2 in wide and just large enough to circle the tube...then I tighten an automotive hose clamp around the leather and the tube right over the kinked area. When I bend the tube, I can't go too far. PS...Its getting really close!

Chasing a bowed slide is a pain! I just tried it. What happens is that you bend one part of the slide and it means you have to bend another part because of the initial adjustment. So you have to keep chasing back and forth. Almost easier to buy new inner slides and fit them in. That doesn’t help though with the outer slide because if the inner slide is bowed it almost always means the outer slide is also bowed.

My friend...fill it with sand and plug the ends. This will keep it from kinking and you can bend it by hand. Untill next time

I bet it's a far less nerve-wracking to repair something like this when it's your own and you don't need to worry about causing further harm to someone else's horn.
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is. However, if it belonged to someone else, I would tell them that the prognosis was uncertain and it might die in the process, but the prognosis would be worse to do nothing.

For an average “serviced” dented slide. What is the cost at your shop?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop4 жыл бұрын
The slide in this video is far worse than I normally see. Usually slide work is about $35 to $75, but it can be more or less.
