Old buddy of mine told me to stop chasing colors, conditions and specific things with lures. He said “these lures are made to catch the fishermen, more than the fish”. Since I stopped buying different colors for conditions, every new and “must have” bait I’ve been catching just as many fish for half the price

Huge wisdom is this. It’s good that technology is making live bait less necessary but when bass eat some rubber tube thingy it’s hard to justify the ridiculous prices.

I never understood the "swimbaits are for clear water only" statement. Fish hunt with their lateral lines as much as their sight, they can feel the water displacement that big baits create just like they can the vibrations from chatter baits, spinners or loud cranks. I fish lots of tannic/muddy water and swimbaits are my go to.

You should look into bass studies related to their sense of smell. Very interesting to say the least. You can block a bass ability to see and their ability to detect the earths magnetic field and 75% can still find their beds when caught during spawn and released 200 yards away, within 2 minutes. If you only block their sense of smell, only about 20% were able to find their way back to their nests. So sense of smell I think is really a bigger deal than most of us would have assumed. That could also be the difference in getting a bass that wants to follow a lure, to commit to it instead. When they follow it they could just be trying to smell the bait as they watch it because they can smell something is wrong about it, but still triggered by their sense of it from their lateral line and sight.

Gotta spread more good sentiment about our native bowfin. Certainly not great table fare compared to most other species we have, but they really should be considered a game fish with how predatory they act and how hard they fight. They are a beneficial species that was in North America tens of millions of years before humans were, and they will be here long after we are gone too. I caught a nice female bowfin today and it was a brutal fight. On another note, I rigged a 7" dieZel swimbait as a line-through to see how that fishes this year, so your timing with this video was perfect.

I have to throw a little love towards the bowfin as well. As a kid it didn't matter what the species was, it was a tug on the end of the line and a large bowfin not only fights hard, it will attack everything from live bait to musky plugs. Bass fishing is still a lot of fun for me, so please don't take this the wrong way and I'm not looking to start a thread.

Tyler … This video brought back memories of the one fishing trip I got to take the in the summer of 1972; I had just graduated from high school, and I had just finished the first half of the summer working two jobs … sacking/stocking at a local grocery store and doing clerical/file work for my physician father. My best friend had got permission to take three days off (for a Sam Rayburn Lake fishing trip) and I got Wednesday through Saturday off and didn’t have to come in on Sunday until 5:00 pm. My boss let me leave early (rare and unexpected) and we were on the road by 2:00 pm and on the lake at 6:00 pm. We fished hard (both day and night) from Tuesday evening through Sunday morning (around 10:00 am). We caught 2-4 pound bass (we called them peanut bass); we limited out each day (10 bass limit back then) on peanut bass plus; Larry’s largest was over five with several over four and my largest was 4.4 lbs. Any fish under two pounds, we released. We lived on beef bologna sandwiches, chips, dill pickles, Ding Dongs (real healthy), soft drinks, and water. Bottom line: we brought home about 70 pounds of boneless bass filets; 10 lbs for my boss for letting me go, 30 lbs for Larry’s family, and 30 lbs for mine. We were both very happy, very tired, and admittedly very proud when this trip was over; within an hour of my arrival at home, I was showered and on the job for my 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm shift. Yes, I was young once!!! Funny side story: within an hour of our return, my mother was on the phone to Larry’s mother offering to share half of the fish I put in the freezer. Larry’s mom laughed out loud, as she was going to make the same offer to my mom. Tyler, thank you, kind sir, for allowing me this 50 + year trip down memory lane!!! Until your next video and beyond, happy trails, best wishes, take care, be safe, the Lord’s peace, and God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita, Texas. ✝️🎣👨‍🌾🦌🙏

Bass loves dirtier water because they are apex predators who loves to ambush their prey. Muddy water makes GREAT cover and they can feed in open waters easier without having to rely on some form of cover to attack from. I personally believe they are FAR MORE aggressive in muddy water than clear water.

I have no idea why people think big swimbaits need clearer water. It moves water with it tail and with the body roll thats picked up by the fishes lateral lines. It catchwes bigs in florida where the water is nasty most the time with minimal to almost no visibility. Bigger the profile the better can see it after they chase the disturbance in the water it has created. I fish dirty ponds and mirky small lakes and have caught some nice fish on 5" and larger baits lol
