They got a song from that same album called "American Life" and its great if you like that quick foundation of groove. If you're in the mood for something more (dare I say) "conventional" in terms of number of notes for a bassist, there's "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers." Both those songs are from the same album. I used to play bass briefly. Glad you're enjoying the Primus journey! Side note: I don't know how familiar you are with Rush, but Geddy Lee is an incredible bassist, too, and also was an influence on Les Claypool from Primus. There are far too many Rush songs to start making a list here, but one song in particular doesn't get enough credit in terms of the synthesis of its groove (including the bass contribution) and that song is called "Alien Shore." Another pair of songs, called "The Big Money" and "Marathon" also might apply here, but they're probably more well-known than "Alien Shore." Anyway, have fun!

I've been listening to Primus ever since they released their 1st album. Actually when I think of them I always say their drummer and guitarist are so overlooked and underated. This group is so tight!
@jasonlaviolette29644 ай бұрын
I completely agree. I guess its hard to stand out with Les Claypool on bass, but just to stand toe to toe with him and not be completely overshadowed means that they are both amazing in their own right. I think another thing that is so overlooked and underrated is Les' vocals. With the lyrics to most of their songs being completely ridiculous and absolutely hilarious (and those aspects are even leveled up by their videos🤣) and being set against the fantastic music that the three of them play together, I guess that's understandable. But to ramble at that speed and yet still have great diction allowing the listener to catch the words is pretty incredible. Dude can also hit some notes and sustain when he wants to. All around, just so much talent and a lot of hard work on all of their parts.
@sammyingersoll88704 ай бұрын
@@jasonlaviolette2964 I agree on all fronts. As long as they have been playing together they seem to stick to similar themes after all these years. Bands usually veer off into different avenues as time goes by, for better or worse. Primus has been fairly constant for as long as they've been around

My friend and I lived about 45 minutes away from where they filmed the Battle of the Bands sequence for "Bogus Journey" (they did it in the little theater in Magic Mountain in Valencia) and we got to be extras in the crowd. It was two days' worth of filming and, in between scenes (which often took a long time bc the crew was changing lighting setups and whatnot), the various bands would play short sets to keep the crowd entertained (and, y'know, keep the energy up for the actual filming). So, in addition to a bunch of other bands I barely remember, we got to see Primus play live two days in a row, and they were awesome both times. My friend and I were already big fans of Primus at the time, so we were among a handful of people in the crowd who yelled out "Primus sucks!" and then laughed at all the confused expressions of the people around us who didn't know the band or their semi-official catchphrase. They just thought we were being rude. Plus there was a cute punk girl there with a huge pink mohawk who I still think about occasionally to this very day. It was good times. At the part when the Princesses are revealed to be tied up and hanging up above the stage, everyone in the crowd was supposed to gasp and sound surprised. Obviously, there were a ton of people in the crowd and we knew it would probably be nearly impossible to pick ourselves out onscreen when the movie came out, so my friend and decided to stand up and point at the princesses when we gasped, figuring we'd be able to see ourselves in the crowd easier by looking for the two idiots who stand up when everyone else is sitting. When we saw the movie in the theater, we couldn't find ourselves and figured it must've been cut. When we eventually got the DVD though, we were able to pause and see that our jump-and-point shows up in about 1 or 2 frames just before they cut to the next shot. We had a good laugh about it and I started mock complaining to all our friends that "my best work ended up on the cutting room floor." Anyway, Primus sucks.

Feel free to mention those drums some more. :D Tim "Herb" Alexander is an absolute boss on the drums. He & Les were made for each other, musically speaking & Primus is at their best with Herb in the group. That being said, he's left the band twice over the years, replaced first with Brian Mantia & later by Jay Lane. Anyways, you may react to some non-Herb Primus & notice the difference in tone. Still good though. Primus is always a treat. But there's only one Herb. O_q

"Fever dream"...hahaha!! My daughter reminded me of those the other day, great comparison for a Primus video!!

The crazy part about all of this music is that Les Claypool plays these parts without ever looking at his fretboard. Live he just looks out at the crowd and sings while slapping the hell out of his bass.

Often while running around in weird little circles and stomping his foot like some old-timey cartoon hillbilly. Dude's a beast.

@@johnplaysgames3120 My very first concert ever was Primus. Ritchie Coliseum 1993 with the Melvins. When he came out on stage in the giant pig outfit with the double bass... man everyone went fucking bananas! No one gave a shit about the Melvins, heh. Looking back, I kinda feel bad for them.

If you are a fan of the band you would know that Les has gone on record as no longer being a fan of the Primus sucks joke. It's stupid now and has been for a very long time

@runawayuniverse Cool story, but Les isn't the arbiter of what is funny, stupid, etc. The meme is alive and well, whether you and Les like it or not. Items with "Primus Sucks" on them are still to this day some of their best selling merch.

Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers!! And watch a live video - seeing him play that bass and sing live is pretty unbelievable!

Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers has been one of my all-time favorite Primus tunes. Well worth the listen. Les is incredible, I have been hooked since 1992 when a friend sent me a mixed tape and I heard Tommy the Cat as a teacher in Chikwawa, Malawi Africa :) Outside of Primus,, you really need to try Tom Waits "I hope that I don't in love with you"

My Name is Mudd. And Devil Went Down to Georgia. Are probably their 2 best. Hard heavy BASS.

Classic strip club music from the 90s.

I really have to disagree there. Devil Went Down to Georgia is not their song. To me its one of the most novelty type things they've ever done. Just not the type of band/song I really want to hear them cover. My Name is Mud is really cool but a lot of their lesser known songs are at least as deserving of admiration. Les's playing in that is more percussive and more simple melodically than a lot of their other songs.

Saw them in the Boulder Theater in Colorado in the early 90s . . . still stands out as one of the greatest shows I've ever seen . . . Lost my glasses in the mosh pit while Primus did an encore cover of Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" . . . just wow.

"Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles, Chapter II) · Primus" I love the whole song, but the intro is pure bass bliss.

My first mosh pit was at the 95 HFS-TIVAL during Jerry Was A Racecar Driver. Not many HFS-TIVAL are around. You had to be a special agent to sneak in a camcorder.

I love how Les's also "vocally plays bass" with his mouth popping all those bouncing consonants in the "say bu-bu-bu-bu-baby do you wanna lay down by me" bits.

Was fortunate enough to see Les Claypool live with the Holy Mackerel at a Sundance Festival side gig (Pretty sure it was called "Lap Dance") The man is amazing live. Interestingly, the "opening" band was the Trey Parker and Matt Stone band DV/DA (yes that thing).

To Defy the Laws of Tradition is the first track off Frizzle Fry. These guys were unconventional and absolutely amazing. I saw Primus in Chicago in 1993, 1995, Kalamazoo 1999. I am also a bass player and being able to play this song and Jerry was a race car driver got me laid a whole lot back then.

I see you’ve been recently dipping ur toes into country lol, and some I recommend are the older love/heartbreak/sad songs. Some recommendations are "I let Her Lie" by Daryle Singletary, "You Lie" by Reba, "Baby Blue" by George Strait, "You Look So Good In Love" by George Strait, (basically anything by George Strait lol), “That’s My Job" by Conway Twitty, "I’d Be Better Off (In A Pine Box) by Doug Stone, and a lot more lol. 80’s and 90’s country were AMAZING, again especially the love/heartbreak/sad songs👌
