I remember this like yesterday.....Without a doubt the period 1985 to 1993 was a very exciting period. Group A was tops - a key ingredient being multiple manufacturers (and classes) competing.

I was 9 at the time. I can remember the guy kicking the rear window out. He only just got out the car. 1 second longer and he was doing a hot lap wit Brock..

I had a pit pass that year and remember when Brock came in the 2nd time and one of the mechanics jumped into the car, held onto the roll cage and kicked out the back window. Then drove like a man possesed! It was a great day, very exciting stuff!

Awesome driving there, wish he got it up to first. Also, I have to say I wasn't a big fan at the time but in hindsight that Tom Walkinshaw Jag was a pretty cool old vehicle as well

Actually, the officials were concerned that if he continued with just the rear screen, the pressure on it from the airstream might have made it pop out somewhere on the track.

It is certainly one of his great Bathurst drives... his official DNF for it belies it, though I think his DNF at 160 laps is probably the most laps ever for a DNF at Bathurst

I had a VK Calais Director. 488 HP at the back wheels. A real Peter Brock Special. It was stolen from Macquarie Shopping Centre at Ryde.

For a locally built v8 the commodore punched well above its weight

Single row chain was CAMs decision even though the production cars ran double row chains. They wanted to bring the Holdens back to the rest of the field when the Commodore was released. They even allowed the V8 Falcons to run at the same weight as a 6 cylinder Taxi in the early eighties.

There was only significant production numbers to justify the use of stock chain and rocker arms in 85. The VK HDT versions prior to the blue meanie were not sufficient for homologation. If Brock had have limited the revs to 6.200 then it's likely he would have seen the podium. Re underweight falcons, it was only the XD 40 kg under the V8 XD kerb weight thanks to Murry Carter homologating it.
@marcpaola1371 Жыл бұрын
@@mattgemfran the xd was more the 40kgs under weight. Dick Johnson said his was as much as 100 kgs under the v8 weight. He got found out at the Calder round of the 1982 atcc, had he not, the xe would have been under to

From memory the garden variety VK commodore road cars still used the single chain 308s which is what brocks and other VKs used in this race whereas the Group A cars had the double chain 304s..

Cams cost Brock the race they forced him to run a single row timing chain instead of the duel row that the V8 ran and it failed

Wasn’t cams fault . The rules were international Group A , and they didn’t homologate the new parts in time . Wharf strike stopped the VK group A homologation , which was approved January 1, 1986. Most of the Commodores broke down that year on top of being slow. I think David Parsons out qualified Brock that year too.
