He was a failed stand-up comedian, who one day attacked the audience (from his perspective, the audience actually attacked him). He was forced to break into Ace Chemicals and because of batman, he fell into pit of acid (from his perspective, batman threw him in it) and emerged as the Joker (the scene where he takes off his mask). The point of his backstory is, that we do not know if it is actually true. The Joker is an unreliable narrator at this point.
