Battery powered chainsaw made from Junk

I've been thinking about getting a battery powered chainsaw for a while so I can utilize the excess power from my hydro turbine, but they are still too expensive.
So I made my own using an old petrol chainsaw with a blown engine and a dc motor from a broken boat winch.

Those XT60 connectors are handy! I soldered in a splitter with 6 of them off of the 12v supply in my car that feeds the cigarette lighter plug. It runs the dash cam, ham radio, and 5amp USB plug with room for expansion! Out of sight and won't wiggle loose.

Wife gave me an Oregon battery chainsaw 5-6 yrs ago as gas one was 'too loud'. Never used it but a few yrs later needed a leaf blower and got the Oregon variant using same battery: a 36v 2amp hr and a 2d 4 amp hr. The blower runs about 4-5 min per amp hour. This is enough to blow off the drive way until the leaves get to the several cubic yd volume, then I need both batteries. So your experience correlates with mine, batteries don't last long per charge.

for the trigger use a 20v cordless drill trigger it will also give you variable speed for the small stuff

I don't think you need variable speed for a chainsaw. The faster, the better, within reason.

@@herrakaarme I use small 2 stroke stihl all the way up to a 250CC 4 stroke chainsaw with massive chew bars every day and you don't start a cut on full power you get it started then hit it having control will also help prevent you from cutting your self into a jam on particularly sticky wood (fruit trees and nut trees mostly)

@@endurofurry You might be right, but when writing the comment, I was just thinking about the Stihl battery powered chainsaw I've rarely used. It even has a very delicate chain to help it eat through the wood. The corded electric Stihl I've used far more has a chain more like any regular chainsaw, but it doesn't have a variable speed either, and seems to work perfectly. But then again, I'm not exactly a chainsaw expert. The one thing I would never want to happen is the chain jamming in the middle of the wood. Chain speed helps with that. Back in the day when I was googling info for selecting electric chainsaws, mostly the recommendation was to avoid models with very low chain speeds.

Any momentary switch not an off and on switch, if this thing falls from your hands for any reason it needs to switch itself off.

I had that exact chainsaw as a kid here in the states. I swear it looked like it was in the same condition as yours. I got it used from a relative and as I remember it was a real chore keeping that motor running consistently.

Maybe use a relay to bypass the switch just to unload some Amps from it? Add an emergency stop just in case it goes haywire or locks up? Two switches for the relay in series maybe? It is nicely done but needs a tiny bit more safety than none at all

Nice one Marty ! I have the very same (slightly later) model of that saw. Saved it from the local recycling center ! Been neglected for a number of years but I was able to get it to run again after taking it apart, freeing stuff up and cleaning it. It sure is a LOT louder than you electric one !

that was what i noticed in your chainsaw review. you did not have a little 12 inch blade saw for limbing trees. i dont have a lot of experience with chainsaws, but i did cut firewood to heat my house for a couple years. names did not matter, function or failure did. i have no need for something that only works 10 minutes. id rather use hand tools. great build. great video thanks marty

If you want longer run times, all though you got through a impressive amount! If you have a tool of choice, ryobi Milwaukee Makita etc and have a few batteries. You could use a dead or unused tool to make a battery holder and battery contact part and use the batteries you already have. 18 volt should run that motor just fine but slightly heavier cables and beefier connections will Help. Run it for a while with everything a bit loose then feel all the wires and connections and see if anything is hot. Thats a concern. Using the modern batteries of modern tools where you can hot swap them will help a lot. I have a brushless ryobi one 18 v ( used up a non brushless one first) and up to its bar length and as long as the chain is sharp it is very good. As soon as the blade is slightly dulled i give it in as you cant force them. Great vid

Epic build! I've welded a socket onto an old bottle jack so my cordless impact now operates the jack as well as removing tyres and parts. Picked up a 3d printed battery receptical for Milwaukee batteries to power an old car air compressor. You can get them for Makita, Dewalt, and, Ryobi, not sure about tool pro. Hot melt glue one of those suckers to the back or the chainsaw for longer run times and easy swap out.

Because running with 12 V it is very variable and can also be driven by a car battery respectively a running car for instance. Much better than all that expensive high voltage crap you can buy. Your modified chainsaw is pretty perfect for sawing smaller stuff (to clear from branches etc.). Please kindly allow me to suggest: You could/should add this common kind of fork/rake/teeth that bites into the wood. With this the work is definitely easier and safer too. I bought a Oregon brand about 10 years ago, with an extra battery. Cost all was about $400.00. Seems like a lot, except I’ve not put a single drop gas in it, some bar oil, and used it to cut up fallen trees on driveway, shrub cutting, pruning trees, etc. it gives mr about 45 minutes of cutting power, thus the extra battery needed. For my use I’ll never crank on a gas chainsaw again.

By the late 70's the McCulloch had a chain brake/ safety handle, so this is probably older than you think . With chain brake safety this would be a hell of a lot safer/ greater peace of mind. You could wire a safety wire to chain brake so that with brake engaged, there is no power, much as most modern power tools eg skilsaw , grinders etc require a safety and trigger depressed to work Great idea, well worthwhile as a proof of concept Cheers

Marty you never cease to amaze me oh, I had the same exact same chainsaw I cut many a tree up with out on the bayou's in Texas. Yeah after a big storm and they would blow down some oak trees we would go out and parts them up and then sell them in winter time for firewood but that little chainsaw never let me down. A new chain would make the saw cut even better. I have an EGO 16 inch 56V chain saw. It works great. I use it with 7.5 amp hour batteries. Also use it with 5 amp hour battery that came with it. It was a couple hundred dollars and works great. Lasts about an hour with the 7.5 amp hour battery. Not cheap but much better than gas for around the house.

Careful with the rope trick on an engine you want to save. Make sure the piston is over the ports on a 2 smoke and on compression stroke for a 4 stroker. I share your affection for the old iron, I have a 1953 IH TD-9 for acreage maintenance. Great videos!

Most if not all of these second hand parts can be sourced from your local Transfer Station. Chainsaws like this get thrown in the scrap metal bin all day long. Most Transfer Stations will sell the parts cheap as part of resource recovery.
