Thanks for the great video instruction I just replaced my battery on my 96 Miata...Due to sub-zero temperatures in Vancouver, the battery ran out of juice. I put the battery on a trickle charger overnight and it was good to go. Good idea to insert the battery terminal cap to prevent a short and lots of sparks. I have to retighten the negative terminal to ensure that it does not loosen.

Thanks for this video. I accidentally touched the positive terminal with my nut driver while loosening the negative terminal and sparks flew. Left a small gash on the positive terminal and my driver. Lesson learned.

OK, but: negative cable comes off FIRST; avoids sparking and neg. then goes on LAST. No sparks from Mr. Positive terminal.

I was confused about that, so I looked it up to make sure I wasn't misremembering. I'm guessing the other battery was dead, so it didn't make a difference here?

Thankyou for a very good explanation on the fitting and removal of the MX5 battery. Especially the red cap use, I have managed to blow up a car battery after it had been on charge off the car, then refitting it . I created an arc with the spanner on the live terminal and the hot charged gasses coming from the battery vent ignited. I suffered acid burns to my eyes ( but fortunately, quick thinking friend doused me down with water and that saved my vision). So your advice with the RED Cap use is a bloody good Point of safety) Thankyou.

Impossible task. In the first 15 seconds: "I'm going to use a tool that doesn't exist in reality: a 10mm socket." Everyone knows there's no such thing as a 10mm socket. Just look at your socket set for proof: you have a 9mm socket, and then there's a hole, and then there's your 11mm socket.

The parasitic power draw could be coming from the radio or possibly from a faulty alarm system (if it has one). Try pulling the radio fuse and see if the power draw stops.

I'm having battery drainage issues trying to figure out my problem. Any tips or a direction you can point me in by chance? Thank you.
@MiataMan3 жыл бұрын
Always Start Simple: -Check battery connections and make sure everything is tight. -Load test the battery to check its strength. Is your car stock or modified? Aftermarket accessories are often the cause of parasitic drain on the electrical system in Miatas. A failing battery will also present as a parasitic drain. I have seen older aftermarket radios and even some stock radios cause a drain. Simple way to find out is to pull the fuse for the radio (leave it out for a couple days) and see if it fixes the problem. Good luck and let me know what you find out 😊👍 🔋

@@MiataMan Thank you I appreciate the tips of the response. I will try everything I can come up with so far. It's a stock 97 mx5 m edition Miata. I take off one of the terminals to the battery every time I stop just in case I can't start it again, seems to be working but not a long term solution. Thanks again!

The battery is an AC Delco 51RPS. You can find the 51RPS from many different brands and it’s available at most parts stores.

Can you direct me to a video of how to disconnect the key pad? Replaced a battery yesterday to realize there is a keypad keeping it from turning over
@MiataMan3 жыл бұрын
If there is a keypad, it will be part of an alarm/immobilizer system. You would need to have someone trace the wiring and attempt to disconnect it. There are many different types and installations vary.

Hey what battery are you using good sir
@MiataMan3 жыл бұрын
It’s a 51R / 51RPS series battery. 51 is the Group Size. The “R” means reverse terminals. Reverse Terminals means that the positive terminal is at the left side instead of the right side.

Hello, thank you for the tutorial. Great one. One question, did your battery come with the tube vents or did you purchase them separately? I can't find details on the battery that I'd like to purchase if it will come included or not, and I also can't find any online to purchase. I am assuming it comes with it. Also, where did you get that battery? Thank you for all your help.
@marciaz314 жыл бұрын
I wwould only buy a battery that is vented for the tubes .... Even my AGM battery is vented from Duracell ....
@MiataMan4 жыл бұрын
The AC Delco battery in the video does not have a place to attach vent tubes. Finding a vented battery AGM or Wet Cell can sometimes be hard (depending on where you live and how much you want to spend). If you check your trunk and battery regularly, you likely won’t have any issues. The vented batteries sometimes come with the tubes. I have a bunch of them here.

@MiataMan4 жыл бұрын
If your alarm goes off while changing the battery, have the remote at the ready and push the disarm button. If your alarm is generally problematic, you may be able to disconnect it by pulling out the in-line fuse on the alarm wire harness.

Miata Man thank you it’s a aftermarket alarm I’m going to to see if I can get someone to remove it. Its connected to the ignition and what no so every time it acts up I can’t drive. :(
