What I've seen of the new rules look like generally an improvement; "the same but 10% better", though there are one or two changes I'm not a huge fan of. On the other hand the list building stuff in the "Armies of X" books? I got 500 words into trying to explain the leaks I had seen to a newbie on Reddit who wanted to know which Isengard models to buy, and then realised I wasn't even close to finishing, and just gave up.

I'm really glad to see that there are so many pieces. I've loved the sculpts of MESBG in the past, but always felt like shortcuts were taken on implementation just to keep them push-fit monopose. I like pushfit monopose, but not when it sacrifices quality. This looks more complex to build, but I'm thinking the results are going to be much better.

Ugh. I hate this new trend of GW of in order to build one mini with zero customization, it's divided into a zillion parts. Sad to see this in newer kits. Good thing I'm not into Rohan and will only get the Rules Manual and Army Book of LOTR
@ConquestCreations3 күн бұрын
There are plenty of customization options for the Wildmen you have choices of spears, swords, two handed weapons, flaming brands, and light shields. When it comes to the warriors of Rohan they are really easy to convert for some for variety. I'll have a video showing off some of my conversions very soon!
@ARVETDEG3 күн бұрын
@ConquestCreations I'll definitely will look forward for those conversions! Love your channel! Still, I think GW makes too many unnecessary parts to build one mini and especially in places that don't make no sense. Some great miniatures that do a great job of allowing customizations and conversions is Wargames Atlantic. I bought two boxes of Halflings (Hobbits ;]) from them to proxy, and they're a delight! Their sprues are a zillion times better than GW sprues, and more efficient and miniature builder friendly, and still allow you for better and awesome customization. Just had to print some axes from them, and I was set. Highly recommend them.

Probably a decent Box for beginners who like one or both of the included faction, with that ammount of free hobby funds available. For a seasoned player who can 3d print whatever miniatur he likes/ having all the armies already available, I personally would just like a single condensed pdf with all the rules and profiles. I totally get that a gaming company could never survive on players like myself so I just am not the target audience any longer and thats fine. Still like to play the game, just not in a phase of my life to drop that kind of money on toys, even if I have the money.

@matthewbro32 күн бұрын
How sturdy are these new multi-part miniatures? I had gotten into the game earlier this year (picked up the Battle of Osgiliath box and some Army of the Dead models), and so far I've been reasonably impressed with the durability of the plastics. My main concern is that GW may have made the spears and bows a bit more delicate on the new Warriors of Rohan, or put them in poses that makes them more likely to break. The multipart assembly also leaves me with concerns about parts getting knocked off if the bond isn't absolutely solid. So, what's the verdict?
@ConquestCreations2 күн бұрын
Great question, they are made out of the exact same type of plastic so the material it's self is the same durability. When compared to the old warriors of Rohan the diameter of the spear shaft is the same while the bows are slightly thinner but not problematically so. The key difference is that with the old miniatures the spear was attached to the miniature on the sprue whereas with these miniatures it is a separate component that you glue on. This results in the spear being slightly less bonded to the rest of the model. This may not be the worst thing in the world as if you drop it there is a chance that it pops off at the wrist rather than the spear shaft breaking which would make it easier to repair. I haven't dropped my minis yet and absolutely wont be doing it on purpose. Overall verdict, these miniatures are slightly less durable but not by a large margin and as long as you aren't dropping them from heights they will hold up to the rigors of wargaming
@heyhoojoe3 күн бұрын
I'm also mystified by the reason behind producing mono-pose models in multiple, arbitrary sections. Do they save plastic, that way?
@ConquestCreations3 күн бұрын
It's a great question. Monopose models allows for a greater amount of variation per model because they can be modeled each in a unique pose rather than needing to be generic enough to accept a variety of different parts. A great example is the difference in these models and other kits such as the Gripping beast Viking set. While the cutting may seem arbitrary it is very far from it, they would have engineers working on these for weeks at a time. These models are injection molded which means that two halves of a steel mold are pressed together. Because these are steel there is absolutely no space for there to be any overlapping sections in each part. Because of that to create dynamic models which more complex geometry they must be split into smaller pieces.
@timothypollard60083 күн бұрын
If anything it's the other way around; the older kits are probably more efficient in their use of plastic. It's to allow for more detail and dynamic posing, and the prevent some of the issues with having include random ugly blobs of plastic between two parts that are in an awkward position for casting (such as the cape and arm on the Rohirrim archer I painted earlier in the week). Comparing the two Rohan kits would actually be a really good way to show the difference between the two casting/sculpting styles since the two kits are (presumably deliberately) so similar to each other. (hint, hint @ConquestCreations)

It's went up by $20Aud which is lower than CPI in Australia.
@carysage3 күн бұрын
@ConquestCreations Close but not quite. There were 4 ruins not 2 and the troll adds a LOT to the value. To say the new box has the same value means that paper battle mat and hard plastic ruler are equal to 2 ruins and a troll? I should be excited about this as I've been looking to expand on my Rohan and start Isengard but I'm just not at all interested. Maybe it's burnout from me playing too many games and GW deciding to launch a new edition of every game they make in the last 18 months or so... But everything about this new edition feels like a last minute cash grab. They revised the rulebook just a year ago for Osgiliath. They released Angmar just a month ago. Now both are obsolete. I'm used to that stuff in 40k but have had everyone telling me "play Middle Earth, that doesn't happen here" for years. Then as soon as I buy in it starts happening here as well.... Very disappointed.

@@carysage I concur the Battle of Osgiliath is overall sexier as a box: that terrain and that variety. But this new Edoras box is still nothing short of nice - like a 7 or 8 out of 10. Good review. Please do not say that 40k does not need terrain like MESBG. That game is unplayable without so much BLOS terrain that both armies can be totally hidden from each other. Other than that, I like what I'm seeing. I'll likely get that box instead of just the books.
@ConquestCreations3 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I think I miss spoke a bit here. Line of sight blocking terrain is super important in 40k. What I meant is that specific interactions with terrain in 40k are significantly simpler. In a previous edition of 40k models could move through the walls of ruins and cover saves only mattered if you were against high AP weaponry. Whereas in Middle Earth the terrain interactions are on a much smaller scale. The position of an exact window and door matters, a few crates and barrels in the corner makes a big difference ect. The systems have very different terrain rules.
@mennorach3 күн бұрын
@@ConquestCreations There you are correct. 40k has less granularity and it shows most clearly in the terrain rules. MESBG is a large scale skirmish game, so the specific location of everything is more important there. And I too prefer that :)

Plastic glue melts the plastic to create a bond, this is perfectly fine for building airplanes or tanks that have large flat surfaces but on a small miniature plastic glue will melt the miniature and distort it. Superglue is better if used with an Activator (like Bond It Super Glue Activator), it create an instant bond in 10-20 seconds allowing you to build miniatures quicker and not melt you miniature in the process.

Great minis, wish they were much more modular for greater variety in larger forces. Disappointing paper mat, plastic rulers, tiny dice, and no points for the new minis. GW greed to get you to spend more. As a starter set, i wonder if mini construction will be too hard for younger gamers? I note some reviewers have commented that constructing all the minis takes over 7 hours. I introduced my nephews to LOTR who were 10 to 13 and they easily made up the minis and had a game within a few hours. Why couldnt GW have included a few Rohan cavalry? The cost of this starter set of just 56 or so minis and 2 houses and a rule book is steep at $370 Aus when compared to the other older starter sets. In Australia this is alot of money for a starter set that doesnt include everything you need to play with the minis. How long will serious gamers wait for new Rohan cavalry when there are several good 3d print options out there?
@ConquestCreations3 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I would have spent easily over 7 hours on assembly which I do agree could be a huge barrier to entry. I have heard the argument that this contains less than previous starter kits which isn't actually correct. Compared to the Battle of Osgiliath the difference is that in this kit you get 3 more heroes on horse and the battle mat in exchange for the troll which to me is definitely worth while but that is up to preference. Having not seen the movie yet my guess on the reason for no cavalry being present is that in the Battle of Edoras the Rohirirm were defending their city which isn't conducive with cavalry, not the strongest argument given that the heroes are all on horses but its something.

Overall I might still buy it. I guess I prefer they cut corners on that stuff than the models.

@@caiusettebruntly497 as long as the mat is the right size, I dont mind it being paper. @@themidnightaristocrat This is a great point! Wulf and Genereal Targ are both on massive horses that are larger than the horses of other miniatures such as Theoden or Eomer. However, they are not out of scale the reason is that they are riding Shire Horses, a breed of horse that is massive and was typically a beast of burden. In real life these horses are larger than regular horses. Having not seen the film yet I am guessing that this is what they ride in the movie.

Nice video, but not great value for money. Oh, and if you're new to the hobby, don't use super glue on your plastic minis.

Thanks for the comment, I have assembled well over 1000 miniatures in my life and have used super glue on the vast majority and literally never had a problem with it. What is your logic behind not using it for plastic minis? I have used plastic glue extensively in the past assembling hundreds of miniatures with it but found that it had no benefit over super glue

That “board” is incredibly tacky.

I absolutely hate this kind of sprue, it makes the model almost entirely useless for kitbashing which is my favourite part of the hobby. I was waiting to see what the sprues would be like before deciding to buy this set, now I'm definitely not.

I'll have a video coming out in the next few weeks showing the conversions Ive done on the warriors of Rohan and the Wildmen have plenty of different options

It seems to me that there is a tension between "beginner-friendly" aspects like the battle mat, and 'value' features like multiple build options for the various figures, which are going to be challenging, at least, for a genuinely entry-level player and probably involve the discarding of the "plenty of bits left over". And someone who is truly new to the GW/WH line, the amount of assembly ("pretty tricky to get together") will be daunting to say the least! It's neither fish nor fowl-not enough real value (e.g., your criticism of the unit variety) for the existing hobbyist and yet not really suitable as an introduction to the hobby for beginning players. For a beginner, your option of buying armies+rulebook as a lower-budget alternative does not quite cover the need: the scenario books in the starter sets is an important component for a new player. Separately, the new rulebook is about fifty pages shorter than before, if I read things aright. What accounts for this?

Thanks for the comment. The rule book being shorter has a few sources, there is a smaller gallery of painted miniatures in it which is a sad loss making it more concise just from the formatting, but a large amount of the rules have been streamlined requiring less words to communicate.
