It shook up the relationship between England and France, because now the vassle of the French king was now the king of another country, that rivals it's own power and claimed a large chunk of its lands and is the core of the reason England and France have been at War until the 1800s

@lessthanevil
@lessthanevil 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, Castle is one of the few holdovers from the Romans rule over England. Disc (or discus) is another. There’s also a big influx of latin during the renaissance and it’s often difficult to determine if a word is french or latin in origin.

@sleepyfork5250
@sleepyfork5250 5 жыл бұрын
@@blubbfisch98 No because for some some we aren't sure if they are really derived from French words or if they just share a common origin. SO the minimum is 1/3 and the maximum is 2/3 but we don't know the exact ratio.
@davieturner339
@davieturner339 4 жыл бұрын
Cygneis : not sure on the overall figures, but French definitely influential. Britain at the time 1065 was already a big melting pot of language from Latin, Germanic, Scandinavia as well as what was still around outside ‘England ‘. After 1066 you had pretty much a big split in language between the nobility now using Norman French and the commoners speaking quite a few varied dialects which tended to have Germanic or Scandinavian influences (that can still be found in dialects today, Yorkshire and the north for example still have holdovers from the Danelaw in some areas). Eventually (mid 1300s) this melting pot started to really come together, in some cases mixing two languages for example handkerchief (Germanic and Norman French), in others French words became common. English is a very adaptable language and because it assimilated new languages this probably helped in forming shared identity across many quite different areas and people, the disconnect between nobility and general population being very distinct in Norman England is probably one of the biggest reasons English became so successful because it links to so many other areas and the Normans didn’t really care what language the general population spoke.

The arrow in the eye theory for King Harold death only came after the tapestry of the battle was restored in the 19th century. It was most likely a spear/lance, as first depicted in the original 70 meter long battle of Hastings Bayeux tapestry, being actually commissioned by Bishop Odo, a half brother of William the conqueror.

I am from Hastings and I have been to the site of the Battle numerous times. There is a dispute to where the battle took place and it would appear the official battlefield is not where it was fought. This is because the land on the officially designated battlefield would have been a bog, and it would have made fighting far harder for the Normans. Just for context, the name of the town where the battle took place is known as . . . Battle, and in the town is an Abbey which was opened in 1067 by William the Conquerer to mark where the battle took place. Back to why the battle wasn't fought where it is officially stated to have taken place. There was a singular road that goes into the area known today Battle that existed in 1066, and it is believed that the Normans came up this road, which in terms of strategy would have been beneficial for the Saxons to create a bottleneck. But as stated in the video, it was believed that William had died and the English broke their line of defence and the Normans encircled them.

But your channel is the exception. You take the content and ADD more on to it by explaining the importance of some events. Not only that but you link the original video and give all credit to it. From there, after research on the area, dna sampling and looking at history books, my last name is first used by a man who fought for the normans. I started researching it when I was 13 years old and I'm now 33 lol. If I'm wrong, then I at least know when my family arrived in the US, which is all I need to know haha

I highly recommend you check out the channel Potential History as an excellent source of the nuance regarding WW2 (and some other conflicts). I think a good place to start would be his “Why Germany Couldn’t Win WWII” videos as well as his videos on Operation Barbarossa. I also think you might get some enjoyment out of the speculative scenarios of the AlternateHistoryHub. I recommend the following videos: “What If Germany Won WWI?”, “What If The Sahara Was Green?”, “The Decision That Ruined The Middle East”/“What If The Middle East Had Unified?”, etc.
