He did have some great accomplishments of course, helping to pass the bill of rights, the victory of the whiskey rebellion, trying to establish religious tolerance, and even creating the first copyright law. His greatest accomplishments was simply helping to pave the way for all other leaders and how they should act. Creating laws, leading the military, and protecting rights. I actually have an ancestor who fought in the revolutionary war as a black slave for the Americans and indeed was freed after. He apparently went on to start a brick making factory where he hired other freed slaves and became sort of wealthy via government contracts and bought his wife out from slavery; at least that was the story I was told by my family. Apparently there is a biography he wrote which still exists but I don't know his name. That's something I gotta read.

As a brit, I only ever really feel patriotic when viewing our nations past. Say what you will about the morality of it but in the words of Dave Chapelle - "don't judge a photograph because it wasn't taken today". All that aside, over the course of the two videos I've gone from feeling slightly scorned by the Americans basically mugging off the British to kick things off (knowing too how it ends of course), to now feeling like the American victory in this war was not only absolutely well deserved, due to intelligent strategy and British ineptitude, but also that the manner of the victory speaks so much to how present day America holds itself. Listing them would be mundane, but just thinking about the parallels is facinating
@Rivarya
@Rivarya 10 ай бұрын
The concept of “historical relevance” doesn’t make any sense when you’re talking about morales. Causing human suffering e.g colonialism, slavery, sexism, etc is objectively bad as are the people or nations who did those things. Be proud of your country for its technological genius or something not it’s all encompassing imperialism.

The Americans only quickened the war, although it was already over. Britain also caught up and took over industrial production, and started hunting U boats with the invention of SONAR.

You missed the american "mosquitoes" a group of small, fast ships that were equipped with a single 10 pounder gun. They were intended to slow and harass the British navy off the american coast. A single 10 pound gun wasn't much threat, but was just enough that the British had to be constantly on guard, otherwise these fast, hard to hit ships would slip close enough to sink them.

For those who wonder, the "hole" on the map of France (5:34) is the Comtat Venaissin, a state belonging to the pope since the 13th century, annexed by the French during the first French Revolution in 1791. It was the region bordering the city of Avignon, which has been the residence of the pope in place of Rome during the 14th century - the huge palace of the popes still dominates the city.

The only reason why George Washington was able to hire him was because von Steuben was VERY openly gay and was kicked out of several European courts. America was the only one that accepted him.
