Kings and Generals

6 жыл бұрын

The conflicts of the XVII and XVIII centuries are often considered to be dull, as the tactics of the period were too rigid and positional. But even this period had its shining stars - generals whose talent changed the borders with one decisive move and pushed the tactics and warfare forward. Prussian king Frederick II the Great is rightly considered the best commander of this era. In this documentary, we will cover the First and the Second Silesian Wars that were part of the War of the Austrian Succession with the focus on the battles of Mollwitz (1741) and Hohenfriedberg (1745). Hopefully, you will enjoy this video, because we are eager to cover the Thirty Years' War, the War for the Spanish Succession, Seven Years' War and other prominent conflicts of that period.

Great Video as always! The discipline that his troops must have had to perform such manoeuvres at night and when under fire, something still considered difficult in modern warfare is exemplary. Far from being unimaginative. this shows what true discipline and training can do and how it can alter the outcome of battles.

Good video! Its very interesting how the Prussian army didn't rout despite Fredrick fleeing the battlefield. That shows the highly competent generals in the Prussian army. Hitler idiolized Frederick the Great. He used to have Fredrick's portrait in his bunker during his last days.

Who filled the authority vacuum after Frederick left? Was there any central figure to lead the army, or how did that work?
@lovablesnowman
@lovablesnowman 6 жыл бұрын
Micheal Pulkka the highly centralised nature of the Prussian army didn't work very well after Frederick the greats death. See how France easily swept them aside in the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars until after the 4th coalition when Prussia modernised it's armies tactics
@lovablesnowman
@lovablesnowman 6 жыл бұрын
Micheal Pulkka I'm not sure. I know whatever general was in charge at the time had complete control over that army and this highly centralised system worked well under the genius of Frederick the great but not so well after. The advancements in warefare also complicated this

Not only was Frederick the Great a great military strategist but in peace he was a great patron of music and the arts in general -indeed he wrote librettoes for the operas of Graun (Montezuma) and was a very fine flautist and actually wrote music himself -some of his symphonies and flute concertos are on KZbin. Composers like C.P.E. Bach and Quantz performed at his court.

@@lonelystrategos What? As a young crownprince he literally confided to Fredrick Willhelm of Grumbko, that he wasn't attracted enough to the "fair sex" to engage in any kind of marriage. The night before the battle of Mollwitz he gave his brother August Willhelm a list of the people he loved most, so they would be looked after in the case of his death in battle. That list was entirely comprised of men. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@thealeph165
@thealeph165 3 жыл бұрын
@@lonelystrategos You are not only wrong on your first statement, but also the statement in the middle. First of all, I suggest you look up von Keith and Katte, and read some of Frederick's letters from the time of being crown prince. Though he obviously wouldn't state obviously that he was gay, he did make constant mentions in his letters about not liking women in Berlin. I am paraphrasing, of course, because I don't have the exact paragraph, but he essentially said on two different occasions that he wouldn't kiss women nor did he actually like them. But not only this, he said he tried to get an heir, so he definitely wasn't abstaining from it. Congratulations, you were wrong on literally everything you said. I would also suggest researching into Frederick the Great while he lived in Ruppin, where he was more interested in these kinds of topics, and as such you can really get into the frame of mind that Frederick was in by reading his letters and diaries (though a good chunk were burnt up in flames due to an accidental or intentional fire.)

After that we`ve essentially divided HRE into two between us and dominated Europe, breaking apart France and even pushing out of Balkans Ottomans when they gotten really nasty. Ah, what a game. Another great video, as always. I always think of Frederick's victory in Leuthen (1757) as his greatest masterpiece of strategy and tactics, especially when considering he was significantly outnumbered by the Hapsburg Army. Even with such a disparity, Frederick used terrain, celerity, surprise, and deception to defeat his more clunky opponent.

Brilliant as usual. So I have one more place to visit now. There is only one issue. Mixed towns' names - one convention should have been used. If Glogow, Wroclaw and Brzeg then not Ohlau just Olawa. I think it may be better to use names from the time of event, so Glogau, Breslau, Ohlau, Brieg and so on. The present names can be written in brackets (Głogów, Wrocław, Oława, Brzeg and so on) thou it is not necessary. The map of the Battle of Hohenfriedberg (what is Dobromierz today) contains the names only from that time with no today's names. I hope you will not consider that as a cancerous comment - it is just like a particle of dust on glare jewellery.

I feel like the Swedes could have won the war if they had tried to just take St. Petersburg and maybe try to train the Finnish corps, they had a legitimate shot, Swedish troops discipline was comparable to the Prussian’s.

@@myspectumjourney most historians attribute the pivotal move in Russia's survival in the war is Charles XII decision to spend the next 8 years after Narva taking down Poland and Saxony. Should the swedes have kept going after Narva, the Russians would not have had the strength to resist.

yea, but coal mines are beeing closed because they are less and less profitable and cost of mining grows - we are going in to very highly specialized use of coal (increased efficency)... and if its about iron - in my city there was first mine in region going from north (we even have museum of minig)... but is is depleted since hundreads of years now silesia is changing its economic profile - during communism it prospered because of massive export (for low prices) to USSR, now we even are starting to import cheaper coal but still our energy source is mostly coal, we are trying to make a deal for new nuclear power plant and build/transform more efficent and ecologic coal plants, (i think that they just recently opened very modern new block) fun fact - biggest ignite coal mine in europe is just few dozen KM north of my city silesia have black coal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be%C5%82chat%C3%B3w_Coal_Mine
