I would be willing to give the Hornby 08 another go, despite the poor performance from this particular one. The extra detailing is worth the extra £20.

I'll take smoother running over fancy detail any day. Incidentally the original DC-only Bachmann model had a much larger flywheel and immaculate slow running. The flywheel was shortened on later versions to allow a DCC decoder to be fitted.

Your layout reminds me of Camberwick Green nice days.

Best model, no contest is the Hornby 08.

It certainly has more detail, but the price has shot right up!

Im a newbie. Ive seen people have problems with slow speeds on trains where they jerk start and stop. Whats the trick to getting trains to run smooth and consistent at slow speeds?
@MessingaboutwithModels3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barnaby, there are lots of reasons why that can happen. There isnt really a trick, but as long as the loco is "run-in" - which means having been run for a good while (usually 15-30 minutes in each direction), and well oiled (but not over oiled!) it should run smoothly and slowly on clean, plain track. You can also have issues when going over points, as there is a dead spot where the rails cross over (called the frog), that on many points is electrically dead, meaning that the loco wont be able to pick up power, and that can cause it to stutter or even stall completely. Using electrofrog points can help with that - I have a video on them, as they can sound complicated, but are really very simple. kzbin.info/www/bejne/baPbe4KVfa9lg7s

Great info thanks

A stay-alive capacitor pack would even out the voltage-loss over insulated frogs or unevenly-laid track.

Bachmann any day of the week, at least you can get spares if needed, and their customer service is excellent. ATB, Andy.

I do like the Bachman model. I think they've also done more variants than Hornby.

I can't find the hornby one anywhere. Got a link?

The Hornby Class 09 has been out of the catalogue for some years, so you will only pick it up second hand, from either eBay, or one of the retailers who sell pre-owned. There is an 08 in the current catalogue, but I dont think its arrived from the factory yet - and its a sound fitted model, so quite a bit more expensive if you dont want that.

Ah right thanks for the help

Thanks for the video, I don't think either loco can justify the prices you quoted, I'll be keeping my money firmly in my bank. Thanks again I've been enjoying your channel recently. All the best, kevin.

Those are the recommended retail prices for 2020 models. You can get them at a discount from the major retailers, and of course, second hand models are available ebay.

looks to me like they both shaky going over so many points, I will go with the Hornby simple because of colour but I already have and Ref and grey Parcel sector version, that will do for me. But I have just seen the Branch line version, lovely livery Black top light blue with s white strip, very smart 😃😃

I want the Bachmann LMR Basra version but second hand it went for £170 two weeks ago. It isn't worth that to me

That's a lot for a shunter! I got this standard BR blue one for £45 a couple of years ago.

@@MessingaboutwithModels hi the Basra 08 was special to Modelzone a few years back, i have one.thats why prices are high now if you can get one, its a lovely colour, blue/red,

The limited editions always seem to go for silly money. I would like a BR Blue weathered one that Modelzone did, but every time it comes up it's priced too much.
@modelrailwaynoob3 жыл бұрын
@@petersmith4455 I wouldn't mind but the real locomotive was a class 11. I see there is going to be a Class 11 LMR finally.

No prices yet, but I don't think it will be cheap.

hi i find both 08s are good,less bits to fall off the bachmann one,prices are high for both models now, over 100 pounds.the hornby railroad versions are not bad. i have one in Anglia Railways colours and a red one Thomas, both run well for under 50 pounds.great video on an iconick loco which we cannot live without,
