This old clip from morning show GMTV shows three vintage cleaners being tested against each other. Can you guess which model wins?

Hoover Junior 119 vacuums are superb. The one on the left was original and the middle one was a refurbished one

I have a Hoover from the 70s. I am not surprised one bit! A real testament of Great British (Or South African in my case) quality!

just goes to show that things were built to last back then. till manufacturers realised and starting making products with a shelf life

Unfortunately consumers want cheap prices and are used to just replacing stuff when it breaks. Appliances used to cost a lot more than they do today and people would get them serviced or repair them if they broke. Of course, they were made to be repaired back then, but a lot of items are cheaper to replace than repair now.

Most direct air vacuums will clean very well Kirby is a great choice if you want a great vacuum but pricey new! Royal all metal uprights I think are the best cleaners out there I use them for my commercial cleaning company. A cheap great deep cleaner is also a sanitair commercial upright

The 2 electric cleaners in this clip are identical hoover juniors model 119. The middle one has been reconditioned and resprayed at some point. However the lady using it is not working as efficiently as the first. Reconditioned hoovers were quite popular in the 70s as a good quality machine could be had for a bargain price. Modern cleaners are so poor in build quality theyre not worth reconditioning and not even worth repairing in some cases.

And they don't clean as well.look at the poor cleaning of the Dyson compared to these.

All I’m thinking. Is that My Kirby Heritage would’ve beat them all. It is about 30 years newer.
@ibaisaic6 жыл бұрын
Even a cheap Chinese made vacuum would beat all these for performance.

They truly don't make them like they used to. I have 5 Kirby's that are of each generation and you can tell how the quality has changed over the years. The newer Kirby vacuums are wonderful and durable, but those 500 series models have a lot more metal.
@jonathanmorgan93524 жыл бұрын
Yes I totally agree with you they do not make vacuum cleaners like they used to anymore. I remember when Hoover used to make quality vacuum cleaners not anymore sad

I have a Kirby Heritage 2 and a Kirby model 517. I completely agree. Both are great vacuums, but the 517 is just metal all over. I like how the motor brushes are easily accessible as well. The styling of both vacuums is wonderful, but the 517 takes the cake! From the side it looks like a 40s or 50s roadster screaming down the road.

@@Sc0teeBe318 You have two great machines! I love the Heritage 2, but I agree about the 517. The 500 series Kirbys were lightweight, easy to handle and built to last. I do like those screw caps to access the carbon brushes, also. But, the 519-Legend 2 are fairly easy to get to, also. I have two Kirbys now: the 519 and the Diamond Edition. I love them all, but the vintage models are easier to service, IMHO. And, they don't require as much maintenance concerning the motor, gaskets, etc. the only thing is to keep the shake-out bag cleaned out or switch it over to a disposable bag system.

The curly-haired woman should be very confident with her cleaner. I wonder if it's still good. It's a shame that the cheap modern-day Bissell's, Hoover's, Eureka's and Dirt Devil's from Walmart are garbage.

I heard Mrs Curly traded it in for a Dyson and two days later was killed in a tragic accident involving a tossed salad.🙁

Lawd have mercy, the power would be unbeatable (because all direct air motors (like both of these Hoover’s have) always have more airflow than a clean air vacuum), but I would be afraid to turn it on for fear I wouldn’t be able to breathe. There’s no way filtration meets today’s industry standards.
