@buckplug24235 ай бұрын
@bruhism when your assaulting element encounters casualties (like from mines) you pretty much have three choices - a) stop the attack and attempt to eliminate the threat (like demining), which puts you under enemy fire in the open and stalls the offensive, giving the enemy more time to prepare, b) fall back, and lose men and material for no gain, making their sacrifice in vain or c) push on, accept the casualties and take the objective. It's a very delicate game of risk management - as in, do I want to risk my men in taking the objective and, in the long run, save lives or is it no longer possible to take the objective or not get decimated, making further attempts at taking it suicidal. Now, Western militaries usually just accept that not every assault is going to succeed, they accept that sometimes men die for no gain, and thus they fall back and try again in a different way. The Russian military, on the other hand, is still influenced to a large degree with WW2 thinking - where casualties during an assault where inevitable due to the sheer scale of the war, and thus it was better to sacrifice some men to achieve operational success and ultimately save more lives (from encirclement or attrition) and win the war. Furthermore, Russian commanders are expected to achieve success and make their superiors look good, so no junior officer will go back to his commander saying they lost men for no gain. That's why they push on and on and on - they can't go back empty-handed. That, and Russian military thinking is very top-down, and both officers and ESPECIALLY NCOs are often poorly trained in making their own decisions. A Western commander will try another way when encountering, for example, a minefield, using his own tactical expertise and knowledge of the situation on the ground. A Russian commander sticks to the plan, because if he deviates from it and something goes wrong, then he becomes responsible for anything that happens. This is obviously a major generalisation - more elite units are trained in decentralised combat, but it's still not as emphasised as in the West, for the whole Russian society is built around the idea that personal responsibility is dangerous and that there's safety in doing what you're told.

The Kremlin IS threatened by a capable military general that can gather a loyal following and has the balls to stick up to the man.
