It’s early morning of September 6th, 2022. As all the eyes of the world are focused on the counteroffensive that began in the Kherson region a week ago, Ukrainians intensify their artillery strikes in the Kharkiv region. Here, Russians expected a series of small-scale tactical offensives from Ukrainians, but they severely miscalculated the forces that their adversary gathered. Maintaining their primary focus on the Kherson region, Russian higher military command made a strategic blunder. And Ukrainians are about to use it to inflict one of the most humiliating and significant defeats on their enemy since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Special thanks for covering the ram episode. The man who committed it (Vyacheslav Bashta) was the best sergeant in the whole of airborne forces and my friend, sadly killed in combat with overwhelming enemy forces later during the offense. Amazing work! One suggestion btw: it is hard to tell and keep in mind the sizes of the units. You could make the icons differ in size or add a signifier, like "x" for a brigade or "II" for a battalion, to make the whole picture clearer. Thank you.

or number of troops
@TheWarArchive
@TheWarArchive 6 ай бұрын
There is a significant problem with that. I will try to figure it out but the NATO symbology is hard to apply here as sometimes, the brigade can be split in an unknown ratio to act independently on different parts of the frontline. When it comes to Russia, they can mix together PMC units with the regular army which is hard to define, and add some really weird units such as BARS which one day could have the size of the regiment and in the week, drop to the size of the company due to losses. Then, sometimes they literally can make a brigade out of a division and a division out of a brigade without any justification in terms of the unit size. I am pretty sure that now, there are some brigades that have more people than divisions, even though it does not make sense on paper. All I wanted to say is that it is quite a complex problem and we will need time to figure out the best way to represent units in this war.

I drove through Izium and you can still see destroyed Russian tanks. Artillery craters in the fields. But you can't go up to them because of mines. Most ironic sight in Izium I'd say is the soviet block apartment that has its middle portion totally collapsed with the left and right still standing. You can see abandoned furniture in the exposed apartments.

Also, a small recap of the defence of Shastya would be nice, since it is the first more or less big settlement to not fall directly into russian hands during the first hours of the invasion. The media and russian supporters like to criticize the failed 2023 offensive, but they don’t remember or give much credit to this very successful counter-offensive, Ukraine really showed how capable their armed forces can be. I also think that maybe the Kharkiv offensive set too much expectation for the 2023 offensive, as in we would see huge areas being liberated relatively easily.
@user-ys3uw8ze7z
@user-ys3uw8ze7z 5 ай бұрын
On the contrary, it was the Kharkov counter-offensive that we dismantled and measures were taken to ensure that such a thing would not happen again. Mobilization made it possible to strengthen the front and prevent situations like Balakleya, where there were very few soldiers on the front line. The creation of numerous defense strips and minefields, as well as troops, prevented the AFU from entering the operational space, forcing them to conduct frontal attacks on the villages of Rabotino, Staromayorskoye and Urozhaynoye, rather than threaten our rear. So you are wrong - we have learned the Balakleya and Kherson lessons well
@macleunin
@macleunin 5 ай бұрын
@@user-ys3uw8ze7z no doubt Russia learned the lesson and fortified the whole front, that’s why they were able to to prevent any breakthrough in 2022. But you can’t say Russia dismantled the Kharkiv counter offensive, that’s just denial off what happened. Russia was caught off guard and had to retreat to avoid being encircled.
@user-ys3uw8ze7z
@user-ys3uw8ze7z 5 ай бұрын
@@macleunin No one, except for the guardians of our authorities, denies the Kharkiv debacle, it was dismantled from top to bottom. And I don't deny it either. We have analyzed the causes, the course, the consequences. I do not remember that Ukraine has analyzed in such detail the reasons for the defeat at Severodonetsk-Lisichansk in the summer of 2022 or in the south of the country at the very beginning of the war. The knowledge of two languages allows us to follow the situation on the front from both sides, and learning English helps us to keep an eye on such discussions. In the first case, the situation is reminiscent of the battle for Liman in September 22.

I like this video when its about facts, such as where unit x was at time z, however i dont like it whenever it goes into...well even the tactical sphere. For example around minute 10 he critizes the russian command for ordering their soldiers to hold. How do you know it was a misstake? Would it really be better to order retreats for dozens of individual units, that are badly motorized anyway? How would you keep up command and controll once those units try to run away? Not to mention the fog of war confusing the picture. Either the author should read up a *lot* about military tactics, operations and strategy or just describe the events. Also: Jesus, dont show videos from a russian repairshop with lots of damaged vehicles, while talking about "lots of functioning vehicles that are left behind".

Can we also get railroads on the maps? Since it is extremely important for Russian logistics.

Love your videos and the level of detail. I found myself struggling to watch though with the listings of every single unit involved I.e. 49th mechanized division, etc. It takes up too much bandwidth and I have no context for these units. I'm sure there is a way to pay homage to those involved without distracting so much. Simplified Ukrainian and Russian flags maybe with smaller less distracting unit symbol or name? Just food for thought. I appreciate you taking the time to research and document this conflict. You have allies in the US. We (should) support you 100%
