A note about free files: Always check them for errors and resin traps (voids) before you print - and before you waste time supporting. I've seen a lot of really nice looking models - including a good number of premium files too - that have voids inside them. Most of them I am able to repair (Blender is awesome once you figure it out, and Windows 3D Builder fixes what I miss) but some are impossible to repair and are effectively junk - unless you can vent them with holes.

Yea if you want free files you have to become VERY proficient with self supporting files. Dialing in your support size is absolutely vital. After I had my support sizes 100% dialed, which took MONTHS, I now auto-support in chitbox, and then paintstakingly add slightly larger supports to the weight bearing positions, especially the first few areas closest to be build plate. Chitubox gets about 95% of the spots where supports needs to go, but cannot properly estimate where heavier or more suction prone areas will be. So far my self supported models have almost 100% success after dialing in with zero artifacts, which are usually caused by too big supports. Many small supports are much better than few big supports, because big supports will pockmark your model. Also you have to learn to rotate your model in such a way that details tend to grow away from the build plate, which just takes a lot of practice. Good luck!

I always look for parts of the model that 'will not see the light of day' (the soles of feet, or the hidden sockets of multi-part models) these places always get a HEAVY support.

Which was published about a month before I threw the gauntlet down to him. Hardly the blindsiding sucker punch he's trying to make it.

I think the Cults logs of my activities there are very similar to the squirrels I watch playing in my front lawn that I watch as I get ready for work.

@@mikehammer4018 The actual terms for the challenge were that the files had to be downloaded fresh at the time of the challenge and that the faction was one you didn't have anything table ready for. It was agreed with the referee that it didn't matter if you'd downloaded something previously as long as you hadn't printed it. Otherwise I'd have been stuck as well. That said, there's no reason not to do orks. Orks is best. WAAAAGH!

I found those terminators tried printing some today and had some failures. Ends up the bottom of the pre-supports wasn’t flat, so the first few layers didn’t stick to the Build Plate. So just a hint always check your first layer on your slicing program.

I have had a few mishaps with the first layers not being on the plate but I'll admit i don't always check it, the shields don't print so well with little fails on them if I had more time I would've supported myself

@@rzor12387 Yeah I'm a file hoarder. Problem is I'm not organized. I use cults3d I have a lot from jonethealliance I search free and space, deathwing, terminator, supported, but you may have to do supports yourself. Most people don't take the time to include those.

I’m about to begin this wonderful journey of 3d printing. However, I heard that if you buy second hand models the price comparison is pretty similar to a printed one, and the resin in non quite as sturdy. I want to know to which degree this is a true thing. Have you ever dropped models? I honestly was quite brutal with my few plastic gw models, and I have no problems putting the pieces together. Is 3d printing really for me?

Yeah I dont know whats happened to presupported STLs, Anything you're not paying for ends up being absolute garbage. I have better luck just letting Lychee auto support and just giving it a quick island scan

Great vid! Ive been watching youre vids for a while and got inspired to start 3d printing. On my quest to find presupported files i may have accidentally found the holy grail. Im checking to see if its legit but if it is I think I now have a presupported file for every necron unit for only 6 bucks. Said creator also has packages for other factions that i may check out later.

White spirts is totally different its petrol based rather than alcohol based. 99% IPA is cheap again now the pandemic has faded. I paid £18 for 5l from Amazon which is cheaper than meths these days

There's actually heaps of files free or low cost. Even 1:1's of GW's line up. You just won't find them easily. Better off joining a discord server. Just don't bring them to tornaments or certain shops. I've seen a grown ass man, loyal to the company come over and clothesline a dudes 3D printed minis. Needless to say, he was banned from the shop.

We all demonstrated how much cool stuff you can do with just legiimately free files. Some paid files are definitely better quality than free - those free skitarii have insanely spindly legs that won't hold up to play compared to the paid proxies that are available. But there's still a ton of great free stuff out there, I could have easily doubled the size of my army with other vehicles and units with more time & points.
