In BF42 and 2, I used to specialize in sneaking around the frontline and capturing points the other team wasn't guarding. That created a ton of memorable moments, including an evening-long Enemy at the Gates style rivalry with another scout, among other things. With the newer games, I feel like the EA "pre-packaged experience" philosophy shows once again. It feels like they've got a list of gameplay situations they want players to experience and they built the game specifically for those, but nothing more. Instead of building a gameplay loop that works, they tend to build gameplay tours. It's like splicing together trailers to make a movie. Sure, you get all the explosions and set pieces, but you'll miss out on the substance and repeat enjoyment. And that just won't make for a good game in the long run.

Regarding people running right down the middle- I think it’s just what’s been encouraged by gaming trends. A lot of shooters have become ‘twitch-based’ in the sense that they’re more dependent on quick reflexes and stuff like that. There’s been a huge shift from ‘macro’ tactics like flanking and positioning to micro-ones such as peeking, quickscoping headglitching, corner camping, etc. The speed at how fast everything is in a lot of shooters these days really enforces this- there are fast TTKs, fast-shooting weapon’s, fast spawns, smaller maps- everything’s meant to get players into action as fast as possible. Of course they’re going to get out of spawn and run in the general direction of the enemy ASAP. Why would they waste time flanking when they’re liable to just instantly die and have to spawn all the way back at base, when that same time could be used recklessly charging into chaos and potentially racking up kills? It’s an instant gratification vs long- term thing, I think.

This argument has been made so many times and it just doesnt hold water. It is a provable matematical fact that games now are deliberately simplified and made easier. I am a younger gamer who has missed the old games, but every time I play an old game now or a game is made in the spirit of old games like Pathfinder for example I am blown away by the level of detail and just how much everything makes sense compared to games now. They are hard to play forcing you to learn the game and utiliaze all its features which is rewarding and fun. You see clear as day with every new instalment the game being stripped of features and depth. You dont even know why you play anymore, there is no way to actually fail to complete a game and there is nothing to learn. Its brainless , waste a couple of hours, entertainment. Its for passive passionless shallow people. And if you cannot see that maybe you are that kind of person.

No VoIP and no self made squads with naming options means no squad cohesion. Having a commander like in BF2/4 marking map can also help a lot depending on the commander.

I think that they can’t have voip because people online are so toxic towards each other. Sign of the times, perhaps.

It's called conquest assault, where the goal is to capture all the enemy flags. My favorite is double assault, where both sides can lose all their flags.

I tried almost all modern online shooters... the only ones I still have installed and are being played daily are: Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Counter-Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source. I need to figure out how to get Battlefield 2.

'They don't know what they're doing with the franchise, and I think they should start listening to the people how play it.' This strikes me as the most incredibly obvious business strategy and I have no idea how no one at EA/DICE at a corporate level realizes the importance of selling to their existing target market rather than some audience invented to fit their hopes for monetization. They are so focused on having the most profitable monetization (lead designer, only previous work was candy crush, quit just after 2042 launch) that they are not doing any market research on their target audience and are totally tone deaf to what their customers actually want to buy from them. Just from a business perspective, it's totally unreal.

Games back then had soul. There were a lot of technical obstacles, so you had to push your creative output all the time. Now it’s aesthetically pleasing but hollow. It’s not about making the best game you can make, or a game that you want to play yourself, it’s just about reaching the bare minimum of standards not pushing anything besides graphics and demand a premium price, each year.

I've had the "stupid teammates don't flank" experience ever since the first BF I played online MP on when I got decent internet connection - BF 2142. So it's not a new problem I think.

Anyone remember MAG? Those Devs got it right; 128v128 combat, one team pushing the objectives, another defending them but unlike Battlefield, it was organised because the objectives weren't all over the place. They were in a line the whole width of the map and if one platoon got the objectives on the flanks, you'd be able to rush the defenders into the middle, you know using those things called tactics. This was over 10 years ago, with 256 players feeling just like they're in a war. Bring back MAG! Oh and don't forget the CLASS SYSTEM with skill trees!

To anyone who wants FPS with big maps, large variety of weapons and vehicles , actual Roles and team tactics where team play is rewarded and running like a moron by yourself is punished - then i can't recommend enough : Squad . Massive maps, 100 players per map , great weapon ballistics . You definitely will have to use mic or you will get kicked out from most of squads (they do mic checks at the start of game) , you will have to work with your team and squad leader and it takes some time learning how everything works because Squad has quite few mechanics compared to your mainstream shooters but it is definitely worth it. I spent nearly 300 hours playing it and every game is different and amazing.

The last bit of fun i had in a BF game was Bad Company 2, before that was 1942. The only reason dice survived was because of modders like Desert Combat.

I feel ripped off myself. There are so many problems with this game from the bugs and things like a hovercraft being able to scale a 71 story building to the imbalance of vehicles and WAY too many people in matches. And the vehicles are basically impossible to kill snipe machines. There are many other issues but those are some of the glaring ones.

BF2042 can be fun and after some updates (more are still needed) I had a couple of fun games. Why or how? I was randomly put in the new awful squad system - together with people wanting to work together. Sorta how it happened by design in the older ones, due to classes? People did it anyone in a few games and it was SO FUN. People just refuse to work together, or don't know how to. Remove classes was a HUGE MISTAKE. At least restrict specialists to what they can equip. AT LEAST do that.

Mack you can still review Kingdom New Lands, they only require WASD and not a bad game actually. And also possibly the Expeditions games since its turn-based strategy. They just came out with Expeditions: Rome too, although my personal favorite is Expeditions: Conquistador. Other games that you could still play are of course the visual novels but I know pure story games aren't your thing, believe it or not but they aren't all perved.

I wonder if you would enjoy playing Ground Branch or Ready or Not. Also when World War 3 comes around I would love to have your thoughts. There are plenty of Indie games coming out that have fractured the hardcore FPS gamers. Battlefield 2042 is just trying to compete with Warzone and Mobile at this point. It is not drawing in the team based hardcore FPS shooter fans. we have Arma, Squad, World War 3, Ready or Not, Ground Branch, Operation: Harsh Doorstep, Hell Let Loose, and so many more. There is so much innovation happening outside of Triple AAA studios. I would love you to shine some light on those games and give your impressions.
