Battlefield Recovery was a series taken completely out of context by certain sections of the media. I know from your previous posts how badly this affected you both personally and professionally. You did stirling work there and those of us more familiar with the background scenario can only applaud. Cheers from Hampshire and look forward to some more fantastic finds in 2021 when we can all get out searching again.

No worries. It was well deserved. I would love to do something similar one day. Every soldier, no matter what nationality, deserves to get home or at least buried with some semblance of dignity.

Wow Kris , I’d realised there was some grief from this series but had never looked it up, until now. I watched it thinking it was amazing that so much ww2 artefacts and equipment and unfortunately lost soldiers were still in the fields . Im sure that all local rules regulations and institutions were followed and you were all acting in good faith.

Digging up unsafe munitions then playing with them .....could of killed the entire crew . I can believe the flak they got although I did enjoy the program . My wife was saying the war graves should of been left as is . She says that about time team also .... Anyway moving on .....
@Addictedtobleeps4 жыл бұрын
They’re not graves Peter. That land is owned by Edgars, and he wants as many bodies removed as possible before he sells on for development. Those guys are doing an amazing job out there. For free. In addition. A WW2 soldier we interviewed said ‘Each of these men is still at war until they are repatriated.” Good point, that. Why not properly bury someone away from the hell in which they died? Bring them home? More so if you have their dog tags and can hand their body back to their family so they can give them a dignified burial?

In France there's a growing realisation that if agriculture has continued on and over the various battlefields in the North, with deep ploughing and heavy machinery - without constantly blowing up farmworkers - the instability of munitions 75 to 100yrs on, is perhaps generally overrated. Apparently injury-causing incidents have mostly occurred when amateurs or military have taken the items away and have clumsily attempted to defuse particular devices. Whilst fully accepting and respecting the principle of not touching noted sites of archaeological interest, an association of metal detectorists is using this observations as one of the argument to attempt to overturn a blanket ban on detecting in the Somme region. Whether they will succeed may ultimately depend on whether the bomb disposal technicians accept a possible increase in work.
