This episode takes place shortly before they find the dead earth, but this split second moment already shows just how weakened galatica has become. as it shows most of her lateral struts (her spine) has been compromised. Granted the cylon renegades buy her some time in the coming episode with repairs, but its a wonderful attention to detail foreshadowing tighs statement in the final episode after her last jump that "all lateral structural lights on the board are red... her backs broken, she'll never jump again." This has always been one of my favorite scenes. You can sense the absolute panic, discord, and fear of the crew on all three ships from not knowing who’s friend or enemy. The other ships in the fleet, and the president’s shuttle hurrying to the safety of Galactica, really amplified the gravity of the situation as the Vipers race past the civilian vessels desperately trying to jump away. This scene was executed just phenomenally. We also can’t forget Bear’s scoring. High marks all around.

I never noticed that either. But it makes sense - they need eyes on target to reduce reliance on targeting computers.
@RayPall3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a nice detail. But it's also quite a pointless design feature if you think about it. 1) It gives each gun turret a massive weak spot that can be exploited by any stray Raider that would be able to slip past Vipers and flak shield. One missile hit and the entire gun crew is dead and/or vented into space 2) Visual contact with the target is useless for the gun crews as they are getting target solutions from ballistic computers anyway and I reckon Galactica has some sort of centralized fire control system to synchronize all batteries.
@Cowracer673 жыл бұрын
@@RayPall 1) A missile that would take out the human gunners would wreck the turret anyway. 2) we all know of Adama's reluctance to computer controls. I would imagine that the turrets 'could' be slaved to a ballistic computer, but the old man probably prefers human gunners.
@RayPall3 жыл бұрын
@Cowracer67 1) That is true, but that glass cockpit would be probably shattered even by cannon fire, while a fully enclosed, heavily armored turret can be taken out only by an accurate hit with a high-penetrating weapon. If you really need to have gun crews stationed directly in the turrets, you could at least protect them by moving them inside of the turret. They can't rely on visual information anyway. 2) placing humans in gun turrets is an obsolete concept in itself, especially when you can hardwire them to a ballistic computer. Even our current naval warships don't use manned turrets anymore with all the targeting info being relayed from their CIC.

Still BSG reboot was amazing
@Negativvv4 жыл бұрын
For me, BSG went bad after the New Caprica rescue. It was still an ok show but never again reached the heights of S1/S2 along with the Battle of New Caprica. Later episodes included that ridiculous Tillium fuel refining ship where men sorted rocks by hand, utterly insane as modern petrol isn't hand refined let alone some sort of ultra high yield super fuel...Also the Gaeta/Zarek rebellion, in the words of my friend "there was no suspense as the rebels were made up of rapists and murderers with all the big name characters being on one side; it was obvious who was going to win". The final episode felt way too long, the bits on Earth simply felt forced and the insistence on shoe horning All Along The Watchtower into the storyline was meh. Why the hell was the Cylon Colony doing "there" after what would likely be many many light years away from the 12 Colonies as they had been travelling for years by that point?! But I'm too harsh, was a great show overall!
@Negativvv4 жыл бұрын
The lack of discipline could be explained as Galactica was the remnant of the Colonial military plus it was a ship that was literally en route to the scrap yard at the time of the attack. So it was staffed with personnel either looking for a retirement job or ones who were likely deemed by the fleet to be unworthy of serving on more modern ships. That doesn't explain how well the pilots performed Vs Cylon Raiders which were purpose built and bred to fight but meh...

Really nothing special that Tigh did. As Rob Gyanisu said, he simply noticed no Raiders were launching. As shown in the first episode, Cylons are pretty predictable. When a basestar shows up, it pretty much always launches Raiders to disperse Galactic's fire and to hold off Vipers. But this one jumps smack dab in the middle of the entire fleet and just sits there, not even moving an inch. Something is obviously different.
@Crisscross9183 жыл бұрын
"Obviously different" yes, but not "obviously safe". It's entirely possible the basestar was one giant suicide bomber which would launch/self-detonate a bunch of nukes right in the middle of the fleet. Tons of other potential scenarios too, all of which constitute a "shoot first, ask questions later" response. The possibility that a cylon basestar is actually FRIENDLY should not have crossed any sane military commander's mind if their objective is the protection of the last remnants of humanity. Forgot how intense this show was. Seriously, a few mins of BSG is far better than most sci-fi in the last decade and more. Only good sci fi alive these days is The Expanse
@WiseSilverWolf3 жыл бұрын
The Expanse has great graphics but the dialogue drags on and is boring in some parts.

Adama's final stare at Col. Tigh just send shills down my spine... even though he got it right... that is the correct character of a leader
@casbot71 Жыл бұрын
They really should have had the Demitries jump in first and explain that a BaseStar was going to be jumping in. Even if both ships had jumped in at once, it would still cause panic amongst the fleet and cause an emergency jump, wasting supplies.

I loved those little moments where the cylons showed their robotic nature, in the earlier seasons it was shown that models had a way of communicating to each other kind of like a cybernetic kind of telepathy or wireless communication.... and that was how I interpreted this scene that the final five were able to communicate to each other like this and thus Anders was somehow communicating to Tigh that they were there and not to fire
@blusafe12 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Tigh is a military genius and his intuition told him to weapons hold.
@PhoenixT702 жыл бұрын
The Baseship was just sitting there, not firing and not launching Raiders, which contradicts everything the Cylons had previously done. It’s not telepathy, it’s Tigh reading the situation and seeing something is different.

Tigh is not just a military genius he is also genius scientist he just doesn't remember it

probably should have had the demetrius go back first to warn them and this could all be avoided
@T3DNR3D5 жыл бұрын
If you've watched the show, the basestar needed to sync to the Demetrius to jump because it's navigation systems were damaged, and the Demetrius only had enough tylium left for a single jump. That's why they had to jump together.

I have to be wondering what it was like at 2:50. Everyone on the civilian ships must have been like holy….!

Character development. Dee doesn't wait to be ordered to get authentication, she just jumps in on her own authority. I love that moment.

The people on the ship at 2:45 must be having a fucking hell of a ride, the pilot filling his pants and everything not bolted down turning the interior into a blender.

I never noticed Galactica had a Defender Class Escort until now :D Too bad they never showed it in action
@LtCWest5 жыл бұрын
From what I know Lore wise, that Defender had been converted into a civilian ship. No guns or other military hardware whatsoever. Btw, did you know there were a bunch of Defender in Serenity as part of the Reaver fleet? ^^

I always liked that shot of the galactica approaching the base star. Almost looks like a shark coming in for the kill.
@dirdib698 ай бұрын
There was always something dramatically beautiful about seeing the fleet ships jumping away - like you could just see the panic. For the civilian ships, jumping was the only thing they could do. I'll always remember the scene in the miniseries where those ships with FTL have to jump away to avoid being destroyed - leaving those without to the mercy of the Cylons.
