-23C Extreme Winter Camping In A Heated Tent

I tasked myself with the challenge of camping in extremely cold temperatures. I was successful. With temperatures dipping below -20C (-10F) I relied upon my Mr. Heater Portable Buddy and my Teton Sports Zero degree bag. The Cold was so COLD my food froze before I could eat it! During the night the temperature dropped to -23C. The trees would crack and pop due to the extreme temperatures, it was eerie but satisfying to listen to. The morning brought sunshine and warmth to the forest. It was a beautiful place to camp.

SAFETY DISCLAIMER:
I can’t stress enough the importance of making sure you have good ventilation while using a propane heater. Please have multiple ways of detecting CO. Mr. Heater has a low oxygen sensor built-in but having a second detection source is a must. NEVER run your heater while you are asleep. In this video, I only used the heater while awake and with plenty of ventilation. Please and I stress, please do your research before ever considering using a propane heater in a tent, and make sure the heater is designed for indoor use, as Mr. Heater is. If in doubt, leave it out! SAFETY first everyone!

Loved the video, it reminded me of a story that happened to me when I was younger. When I was a teenager I got lost in the woods in the Colorado mountains after a day of skiing on a snowy night. I walked around for hours until I got tired and layed in a ditch for a little while. After a bit I started to get cold so I walked around some more. After a while a large animal started running towards me. I was afraid until I realized it was a large dog. It barked at me to follow it and it started to direct me for a quarter mile or so until we came to a road. It wasn't more than a few minutes longer that a car came though and stopped. The door opened and the people called the dog. It had gotten out and they were out looking for it. They were kind enough to take me to their home to warm up and then called my dad to get directions and took me home. Had it not been for that dog running away that night and finding me I would likely be dead. I knew God was looking out for me.

17°F. But the truth is when it getaways below 50°F I consider it 🥶. I just watched this for the second time and realized in 35 plus years of camping I’ve never had to worry about my food freezing before I could eat it or literally never had to pray to make it through the night because of the temps. Too fun and safe camping bro!

I enjoy that you actually show the camp breakdown. Usually videos just end with “alright, I’m gonna break down and get out of here. Thanks for watching (etc, etc),” but don’t actually show how much more there is to do! The coldest I’ve ever been camping, it was about 35°F. We were so dumb. It was a summer trip, but we went to the top of a mountain outside Colorado Springs - didn’t bring any firewood or real food (just trail mix and gas station snacks), and we went to an established campsite so there wasn’t any downed wood to make a fire with. We tried everything to get a fire going with the twigs we could find plus our lighters, but nothing. We told stories around a flashlight and drank way more than we should’ve. It was so dumb, and a memory I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. 😁

a small tip, if you ever check back on this video: the emergency blanket will work best reflecting back on you from some distance. Tying it to a point on the ceiling of your tent would be optimal, or in front of the door, propped up by poles you have have. The point of it is to prevent heat from escaping, not to prevent the cold from getting to you.

Kenny, The coldest camp was -30 F (solo) and -40 F (with a group we called "The Chena River Pack Rats") while stationed at Eielson AFB outside Fairbanks, AK. Awesome experiences every time I went out, no matter what the temperatures were. I must admit that I always carried my M1 Garand and Blackhawk revolver in case of bears or wolves. I always let the State Police know when and where I was going (along with a copy of a USC&GS map marking my intended route and campsite in the event I didn't check back in ... so they had some idea where they could find my bones!). This was back in the late '60s, long before cellphones and such, so you couldn't call for "Outdoor Dash" or 911. 😁 Love your spirit ... I know you're never alone. Bless.

I can remember living in -17 degree weather for a week straight while I was stationed in Korea several years ago. The military sleeping bag system they issued us was life savers. They are bulky but are by far one of the best sleeping systems out there for extreme weather. I believe they are rated for -30 degrees. I have one I use in extremely cold temps now. I normally don't use the bivy though. If you have the extra cash they are worth the investment for the type of camping you are doing. Shop around you can get it for $250. They used to be over $400 when they first came out. It has an inner and outer bag, bivy and a stuff sack. The outer shell can be used in the summer and you stick the inner liner for fall and winter.

@@diypainting6933 1000s of experiments of different types.... using science .. you know the science that allows us internet and computers that allow you to watch youtube, planes you fly on, life support machines..medicines and vaccines, mobile phones.. all through science... yet the only science your not interested in is the science that proves how old the planet is and how it was started.. just ignorant to the truth... if you wee born in iran you'd be loving another god... 10,000 years of your religion and not a single bit of evidence demonstrating any actual god... also bible written 50 years after jesus apparently lived.. all those miracles and nobody documented them at the time... strange isn't it... average life expectancy was around 30-40 so no eyewitnesses either... convenient again... you should have stopped believing in fairy tales when you were about 13.. anyone i suppose when you've been fooled for so long it's hard to accept you've been mugged. off...

I'm a new subscriber and an avid outdoorsman myself. The best part of little mishaps, are that we learn from them and try not to repeat. I prepare my chopped veg's, meats and flour mixes and bag them up at home. Then put them in an iceless cooler for winter camping.

Hey Kenny! Now I know I’m not the only one who rolls on the mattress to let out the air, LOL. Tip for you. Turn your water bottle upside down so the ice will form on top of the water. Now when you drink your lid won’t freeze shut and the ice will be on the bottom of your bottle. Thank you for your stand with Christ. I love your videos, your Brother in Christ. Chris

So I watched to the end and this really was a cool video. Not long ago, I bought a extra large cot from Cabelas to get me off the ground. The only problem is that cot weight is a bit too much to haul around. Its nice but at over 50 lbs I wish I would have bought a lighter cot. I have a Nemo Cosmo inflatable pad with a foam layer built into the top and always place a additional 1 inch foam pad under that for added layering on top of my cot. Then my sleeping bag which is a -50 SlumberJack I bought almost 30 years ago. I'm planning to buy one of those Wiggy Sleeping bags for my back yard because obviously it time to retire the old SlumberJack. People I work with think sleeping outside is strange. Personally it is where I recharge my batteries. I sleep like a baby outside and always wake up feeling well rested. Aslong as I'm warm of course. This video makes me think about this upcoming Winter and I am ready again and can't wait.
