We use a different type of bay leaf.We also call it CELIMENT leaf.We use it in coconut sugar cakes and in making chocolate tea from raw cocoa.The leaf is also used to make bayrum.

As to use of cloves, less is more. They have an extremely strong flavor. For me, 2 per coffee cup is plenty. Smashing the cloves releases the oils more, but don't smash them so small that you can't strain them out before drinking your tea.

Burning bay leaves at home keeps mosquitoes away. Much safer than poisonous mosquito repellents.

At one time it may have been that burning the leaves helped to disinfect their dirty smelly homes. In England it was like that historically. People thought it was the smell that was the problem so they burnt herbs (for the wrong reason) and they helped a lot. The Church classed all herbal treatments as witchcraft which they wanted to be rid of.

@Mary Mwinga It could give you palpitations or even heart attack if you have a weak heart. I used to work as a chef in a high-end restaurant in London. It was forbidden to use bay leaves in the kitchen . On the other hand, burning a leaf in a room or kitchen would get rid of cockroaches and vermins and refresh the air.
