From Oscar-nominated visionary filmmaker Baz Luhrmann comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ drama “Elvis,” starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks.
This film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).
Starring alongside Hanks and Butler, award-winning theatre actress Helen Thomson (“Top of the Lake: China Girl,” “Rake”) plays Elvis’s mother, Gladys, Richard Roxburgh (“Moulin Rouge!” “Breath,” “Hacksaw Ridge”) portrays Elvis’s father, Vernon, and DeJonge (“The Visit,” “Stray Dolls”) plays Priscilla. Luke Bracey (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “Point Break”) plays Jerry Schilling, Natasha Bassett (“Hail, Caesar!”) plays Dixie Locke, David Wenham (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, “Lion,” “300”) plays Hank Snow, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “The High Note”) plays B.B. King, Xavier Samuel (“Adore,” “Love & Friendship,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) plays Scotty Moore, and Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) plays Jimmie Rodgers Snow.
Also in the cast, Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things,” “The Broken Heart Gallery”) plays TV director Steve Binder, alongside Australian actors Leon Ford (“Gallipoli,” “The Pacific”) as Tom Diskin, Kate Mulvany (“The Great Gatsby,” “Hunters”) as Marion Keisker, Gareth Davies (“Peter Rabbit,” “Hunters”) as Bones Howe, Charles Grounds (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Camp”) as Billy Smith, Josh McConville (“Fantasy Island”) as Sam Phillips, and Adam Dunn (“Home and Away”) as Bill Black.
To play additional iconic musical artists in the film, Luhrmann cast singer/songwriter Yola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, model Alton Mason as Little Richard, Austin, Texas native Gary Clark Jr. as Arthur Crudup, and artist Shonka Dukureh as Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton.
Oscar nominee Luhrmann (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”) directed from a screenplay by Baz Luhrmann & Sam Bromell and Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner, story by Baz Luhrmann and Jeremy Doner. The film’s producers are Luhrmann, Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”), Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss. Courtenay Valenti and Kevin McCormick executive produced.
The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Mandy Walker (“Mulan,” “Australia”), Oscar-winning production designer and costume designer Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”), production designer Karen Murphy (“A Star Is Born”), editors Matt Villa (“The Great Gatsby,” “Australia”) and Jonathan Redmond (“The Great Gatsby”), Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Thomas Wood (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), music supervisor Anton Monsted (“Australia,” “Moulin Rouge!”) and composer Elliott Wheeler (“The Get Down”).
Principal photography on “Elvis” took place in Queensland, Australia with the support of the Queensland Government, Screen Queensland and the Australian Government’s Producer Offset program.
A Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation, A Bazmark Production, A Jackal Group Production, A Baz Luhrmann Film, “Elvis” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is set to release in theaters in North America on June 24, 2022, and internationally beginning 22 June 2022.

I lived the Elvis era. Over the course of four decades, I have watched many movies, specials, documentaries, etc. about Elvis Presley and his life. However, this film was extraordinary! I cannot recall the last time I was entertained and moved by a film where I already knew the story's beginning, middle, and end. It was a testament to the man's talent, his influence, and his effort to be somebody. It also paid homage to Elvis's determination to be decent man. I kept hearing Alannah Miles' "Black Velvet" in my head throughout the movie. Elvis is an integral part of our American DNA.

That was one of the things I really loved about it - that it presented Elvis as a complete person. So many - if not all - of the other Elvis movies I've seen in the past, he's always portrayed in a very one dimesional, cardboard cutout, way. It was such a beautiful movie. Love the creative camerawork, Austin Butler is amazing, the whole movie is just so beautifully-crafted, and emotional. My only one issue is that Tom Hanks playing the Colonel ruins that whole suspension-of-disbelief thing. You can't get totally lost in the movie because your brain is like 'look it's Tom Hanks'. Part of the reason you can believe that Austin Butler is Elivs is that Austin is not uber-famous. Tom Hanks is, and that actually often ruins movies he is in because it's like 'oh there's Tom Hanks'.... ...same with any super-famous actor. And Tom hanks is the only super famous person in this movie, so he stands out like a sore thumb. If it had been someone less well known, it would have been so so so much better. On top of that, the accent he's doing is weird. I assumed the Colonol actually talked like that, but when I listened to his actual voice, I did not hear that.
@11cabadger
@11cabadger Жыл бұрын
@@Julia-nl3gq I know what you mean. Tom's performance was fine but there were points where it was Tom in makeup (the prosthetics were excellent) but like you said it was still Tom Hanks, which must be terrible for him as an actor. He's been able to do so many different roles. I guess when Spencer Tracy or Fred Astaire were great it was always a Tracy or Astaire film -- weird Merle Streep can morph into different characters. Thanks for bringing that up, Julia🌼

I've known Austin ever since he played in The Carrie Diaries and seeing that he took such a very challenging role (I've been an avid Elvis fan ever since I was born, I come from 3 generations of fans) i was absolutely amazed by his performance even from the trailer. I've already seen the movie 2 times now and I can only say that I cannot imagine anyone to ever portray Elvis to the core as earnest, passionate and on point as Austin. He got all of Elvis's mannerisms on point, he had 2 years to study him, and god knows he did it to the very little detail. I'm so proud of the fact that he won the Golden Globes, I'm waiting for the Academy to make their announcement, because oh lord, there's so so so much talent that Austin can bring to the table, and working on a character so difficult and nailing it is his passport to so many achievements in the Hollywood industry.

But even more, I never paid much attention to Elvis growing up. This movie she'd a whole huge new light on who he was. Priscilla deserves a lot more credit. She’s kept his memory alive and protected him with so much class, grace and style… despite all she went through. She is an amazing woman and his other half. If you actually sit and watch her past interviews she loved Elvis but the rock and roll lifestyle and is infidelity made her choose herself. She did the right thing in my opinion leaving as he was not a healthy person in the end … it was not healthy for her of her child to be his codependent. . and yet she still stayed friends with him and speaks highly of him and never expects anyone to ask about her even though she’s amazing. Look at that hotel she built and all she’s done. She herself had amazing taste and he chose her for a reason. I don’t think anyone could have done it better on his behalf after he was gone.

Austin Butler most definitely is deserving of the Oscar for his performance. There were times when I literally thought he was Elvis! As the movie ended I felt the same sadness I did the moment I learned Elvis died. Know exactly where I was when I heard - on a tennis court and it was my Mother who came to tell me. I miss great stars who died too soon, and my Mother who died in 2015. I watched this movie 5 times because the first time I was too emotional to fully grasp what I was seeing. The second time because I was so engrossed with Austin Butler's performance and how much he looked , sounded, and acted like Elvis that it was messed with my mind that I had to watch it a third time to make sure I didn't miss anything. The third time I couldn't get passed Tom Hank's portrayal of the Colonel, which was astonishingly brilliant, so much so that it made me feel both hatred and admiration for the manager. Then the 4th time after watching every interview with Austin,, Baz, and of course Priscilla and Lisa Marie to get their perspective on how they experienced this docudrama; I watched the movie through their eyes and was once again very emotional. And finally the 5th time through my eyes and how it made me feel rewatching his life just for the sheer enjoyment and longing for his music, his entertainment, and for humanity as Austin would put it, that changed our world. I was thinking about this and I realized why this movie was so deeply profound and evoked such an emotional response from me. I think it's because Austin did such a hauntingly perfect performance as Elvis (confirmed by Priscilla and Lisa Marie) that it felt as if he gave Elvis back to us, even if it was just for a couple of hours. In that seat, for a moment in time, it felt like Elvis was alive once again. Extraordinary work that can only be described as: sublime! There is no need to ever make another Elvis movie again. Baz dropped the mic on this once in a lifetime film, just like Elvis was to the world. Bravo♥️

This movie really brought the whole story around, humanizing him and reminded me that The Divine Spirit was the wellspring of ELVIS the phenomenon.

My dad was a huge Elvis fan. Him and my mom were in Memphis visiting my mom's sister and they were gonna take my dad by Graceland as he never been by there before. It was the day Elvis died. They didn't make it to Graceland that day but always remember that story since I was a kid. Whenever I see or hear Elvis I think of my dad. He was my Elvis. Miss you Pops. I think a lot of people from that generation will get to relive that period in time. Look forward to seeing this one.

It's about time we had a big budget epic Elvis film. Congratulations to Baz Luhrmann for directing an exceptional movie. The camera angles and movement throughout give the film a dynamic breathtaking feel about it. Austin Butler as Elvis puts in an incredible performance. His voice, his look, his presence is a very convincing Elvis. For me, Tom Hanks steals the movie as Elvis's slimy and flawed manager Colonel Tom Parker. He puts in another exceptional performance demonstrating traits where his character is quirky, selfish and often very humorous. Its another performance that deserved an oscar. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors of all time. UNMISSABLE.

@@lacygray524 ~ Elvis grew up in the black culture, he lived in the black area, the black neighborhoods of Tupelo on ol’ Saltillo road. The home that Vernon built, they briefly lived in and it certainly didn’t look like the way the home is presented today. The Presley family was dirt poor. Gladys had also worked in the fields with her young son who was exposed to the soulful singing in those fields. Elvis & the Presley family was regarded as being ‘from the other side of the tracks!’ The white conservatives did not like Elvis. They were against everything about Elvis, from his long hair and sideburns to his loud clothes, his gyrations onstage that they thought were sexual and especially hated his music. They blamed Elvis for juvenile delinquency. They called him despicable names from the devil to the ‘n’ word lover! Elvis’ father, Vernon had also done time in prison when Elvis was a child & their home was foreclosed, so to the ‘white Christian’ conservatives and other religious groups, Elvis was not liked at all! A judge in Florida banned Elvis from moving onstage and the judge attended his concert while the police filmed him. Elvis only moved his pinky finger and the crowd went wild! Elvis and his parents did attend their Pentecostal church and was heavily influenced by the Gospel music. Elvis did attend black churches. Elvis had black friends as a child and had black friends as an adult. Gladys stomped danced, sang and played harmonica. Music was an integral part of their family, their life and Elvis truly loved being in the black churches because music to him was his life! Elvis even said so later in life! Elvis loved R&B music, country and Gospel which is what rock n roll was formed from. Listen to Elvis in the recording studio, between songs he’s to record, you’ll hear Elvis belt out some of the best rhythm and blues. He loved playing bass guitar too. Now, with all the negative stuff and criticism Elvis went thru, and also attended the WDIA benefit in Memphis with black friends (‘56 & ‘57) who were singers, and then breaking racial segregation laws by attending ‘colored night’ at the Memphis fairgrounds, where he was photographed winning at games and giving the prizes to the children (the black kids) Well soon enough, the only child, the only son to carry on the family name who was also the bread winner for the family was drafted! The military branches had lots on who was going to ‘win’ Elvis. This was during the time that Elvis Presley was regarded as a national threat to the United States! (Yes, this is true!) It was a big deal to shave Elvis Presley’s head! This was Elvis Presley’s time of stardom! The government thought otherwise. They could control Elvis plus use his stardom to advertise the military and they did just that! Elvis could have fought being drafted but it would look worse for his character, his career. Elvis served humbly and refused any special treatment or lighter duty. They wanted him to be in the entertainment section to entertain the troops but he served as any other soldier. Now, with all that, Gladys, who we all know worried about her son when he was on tour singing & hated when the fans tore his clothes off, scratched him awfully etc. Gladys couldn’t be with her son, or talk to him during basic training and that was hard on her. When Elvis was at Ft. Hood, Texas, after basic training, his parents visited him at Eddie Fadal’s home. There are home videos of Elvis & Anita & wonderful home recordings of Elvis & Anita singing. The toll though on Gladys was severe and Elvis told his parents to go back to Memphis & for his Mama to see her doctor. Well, soon enough, an ambulance took Gladys from Graceland to Methodist Hospital where she was admitted and was in grave condition. Elvis requested many times to see his Mother but the Army refused his requests. Elvis was upset and threatened to go AWOL if he couldn’t see her, so the Army finally allowed him to see his Mother. Elvis and Lamar quickly flew to Memphis where Elvis visited his Mama all day long. Vernon told Elvis to go home and get some rest. Elvis went back home to Graceland while Vernon stayed at Gladys’ bedside when she died on August 14, 1958 at age 46. Elvis was devastated and in my opinion, he knew that it was him being in the Army, soon to be stationed in Germany that truly tore apart his Mama. Later on, in 1970, while onstage, Elvis said he was drafted and he was shafted. In my opinion, Elvis never forgave the way his Mama died. Had Elvis never been drafted, perhaps Gladys would have lived longer. Only Elvis knew why he said that and we will never know what was really deep down in his heart. It’s been said that Elvis was never the same after his Mother’s death but I think it’s more than that, I think it was about why she died. Gladys died mostly of a broken heart... “Until We Meet Again, May God Bless You, As He Has Blessed Me” “Adios” Elvis Presley TCB⚡️TLC⚡️
