I have only had one visit. I showed them the TV. It wasn’t even connected and when I did connect it it was so out of date that it couldn’t even find any channels as it needed a rescan. They could see it wasn’t used. I never had any problems with them since. I still get letters asking if my usage changed. So every three years I return the declaration and have no problems with them.

Mine all get shredded and go in the compost bin. That's just the last 22 years, mind - before that I didn't have a garden, so the council took them away. I've been 51 years without a TV or a license, and we were looking forward to getting a free license when the old boy got to 75 - we were gutted when that was abolished. Not that we planned on getting a TV, we just wanted the letters to stop. I'm sure they could reduce the fee if they gave up on the constant letters.

Almost none of their shows reveal any particularly biased opinion, that is just a trendy myth you are peddling. Occasional guests or presenters may air their political viewpoint but you are free to disagree with them :)

The reason I cancelled my tv license just over a year ago was because of this channel. I paid the bbc for years my subscription fee but realised I could save my money by cancelling it. On the fact broadcasting tv was no longer a use for our household. Everything is watched in a different manner, so it was a no brainer. Cancelled my tv license and genuinely saved the subscription fee. There millions of people today still paying for their license who I'd imagine most don't require one- because it was what we did in the olden days with no thought attached. That was me 12 months ago. Well they do make a strong case for abolishing the licence, when people have to reduce their TV entertainment costs to ensure they have enough food and energy then being able to not have to go through all the pain of cancelling the TV licence and the follow up people knocking on the door would be marvelous Yeah we know that people can cancel their licence but how many are deterred by all the forms and follow ups? So yes it's good to see they are so concerned about people and so we can look forward to their commitment to moving to a subscription service with adds so they can give customers a cheap choice that's easy to sign up to and to cancel and no more licence obligations

Streaming isn't going anywhere. The latest tv viewing figures revealed that just one programme got an audience in excess of 5 million viewers which is really poor and fire sticks are still selling well. In addition to subscription services there are plenty of ad-supported services such as pluto tv and imdb tv both are actually surprisingly good. Its funny that's its the likes of the BBC and The Guardian that's doing these articles.

But this is not common practice at all - it's expensive sending someone around to spend hours waiting for you to watch TV.

Here in Ireland there's no option to give up the TV licence. You either have it or face going to court then brought to a witting room in a prison and then get sent home again with a big fine to boot. We are being forced to pay €160 a year for the thing 🤬 The worst part of it is the TV licence fee goes towards RTE and most people in Ireland don't watch any of the RYE TV channels or listen to their radio stations meaning we are paying for a service that we don't use. Plus some of us are paying SKY TV for our channels which include RTE TV and RYE radio

The BBC wouldn't even bring it up, the amount of people that think a TV license is just a normal thing you have to pay is phenomenal. The only way to really find out if you need one or not is to read the terms on the TV licensing website. How many 60/70+ year olds are going to worm their way around websites to figure that out? I cancelled my TV licence in 2011, in fact I gave my TV away, I was so sick of the rubbish being broadcasted. I took up reading and to be truthful, I didn't miss watching TV. This lasted quite a few years, then came subscription TV. I paid for NowTv and Amazon Prime. Netflix was a better choice for the money so dumped the other two. Netflix has started to increase its subscription price so I'm keeping a watch on that. If they get too greedy then they will be binned and I'll go back to my books?

I only have one streaming service - at a time. When I feel I've seen enough of one, I cancel and restart another. I barely watch an hour of TV a day, though my wife watches a bit more, so we feel that's sufficient. I don't even have a large TV - we find a basic 24" model does us fine. I know families nearby on the breadline who subscribe to them all, and seem to need 50"+ screens to watch them on.

I never paid tv license, when they were writing to me I always answered I don’t watch tv, which is true I only use my tv for Netflix and each movies on discs.

I'm quite happy to pay a small premium for no-ads on streaming services, if their service has content that I want to view - the BBC has neither at this point!

There simply isn’t a viable market for all the streaming services. Most of them operate at a loss in the mistaken belief that eventually they’ll get enough market share to become profitable. Many with merge or close, eventually resulting in only 2-3 companies remaining. (It was this thought pattern that produced all the cable companies 30 years ago - and with similar results eventually).

Cancelled mine too, BBC has made some great comedies over the years, but sadly not for many years. DVD box sets of old shows are much better value than paying for a license to watch stuff I personally find unwatchable.

the licence is not a licence, it's legally a tax. The fiction is that it is not a payment to or for the bbc, so non payment is a criminal (ie prison) not a civil offence, and there's no relationship between viewer and bbc so no consumer rights emerge. This fiction has become even more bizarre now that the 'licence' applies to all live broadcasting plus one website. In real life we all know it's a payment to and for the bbc, it's an abuse of our tax system and an abuse of our legal system. The goons turned up catching me off guard phone was in the shed where i had been so no video to send you yet!. 30seconds chat who are you oh your from tv licence nope not interested closed the door. so wished id had my phone. im sure they will be back soon. keep up the good work on bringing down the BBC

I have gone a step further taking the TV in another room the damn thing unplugged do I miss it hell no I did inform the BBC website I didn't want any more of the s*** but like many got ignored I did try ringing in ultimately they just get me hanging around 4 calls average 14 minutes but then somebody gave me some wise words I think it was your good self if you ring up to ask them to stop their threatening letters that you've got a sensitivity on their system and that means they will have a few more since cancelling my son has bought a Doberman it started off as a puppy it is now getting on for 35 kg and getting larger by the day if a licence sales person comes and they are round the back of my property would I be within my right put the dog on them and beat them with a rounders bat seems only fair considering threatening letters and accusing me of dishonesty. I know it's more effort than just not opening the door but where's the sport in that.

I read that story yesterday and thought exactly the same! With regards to ads, can't stand them. Ditched now when they thought charging for a subscription and adding ads was a good idea. Funnily enough since cancelling they offered me entertainment back at a pound a month for 3 months, then just before it was about to end emailed to say you can keep pound a month deal for another 6 months. Result. Guess they know it's true worth these days! Just swapped from Spotify to KZbin music as you get ad free KZbin included. The quantity of them was becoming ridiculous. And my finger has got well versed in double tapping to get past KZbinrs poxy rambles about Squarespace and nordvpn. Yawn.

Have been thinking of cancelling my licence as I don’t watch live tv at all. Am definitely now going to cancel. I know an ex head of drama, retired, who is a millionaire because us stupid people pay a licence fee.
