As a film major in California, I can unfortunately relate to this on spiritual level- and I haven’t even finished my four year degree, yet. I can’t even imagine how stressful it is for the actresses in Hollywood, having to look and act a certain way. I LOVE BBC for bringing this to light in the industry, and hope to one day work with them as a Television producer. Thank you!!
@ReapTheWhirlwind6 жыл бұрын
Same. I wish the casting room was kinder to women. As a female director or producer you have to tread a fine line, just like the actresses. You can be neither too controlling or too disorderly, neither too authoritative or too impressionable. I want to have enough authority to allow women dignity while they're auditioning but I will inevitably be see as controlling or even as incompetent.

The thing is, that a producers job is to make a movie that sells. Thus they have to make an image in theire head and try to create as the movie as near as possible to the image in theire head. And honestly, i dont think the movie buisness is just hard on actresses. I believe it is just as hard on actors. Maybe in another way, but i dont believe that beeing an actor is easy either.
@micca9033 жыл бұрын
@@luxfreakx I agree with you. Hollywood isn't kind to anybody really. It's a hugely competitive industry where there are a huge amount of actors ready to take your place. If all these successful people really feel this way they could get together and finance a whole new industry where everyone is treated fairly. They won't do it because it's much easier to complain about it when you don't have to risk hundreds of millions on a virtuous film.

For all the guys getting upset about this,1 it's satire. 2 where does it say men don't get similar treatment, like just for looks why do you think they got Tom Hiddleston as the leading lady! 3 75% of the industry is male, 4 this is obviously a dramatization of what happens but it has had to be condensed so would happen. 5 it is a short, with a small budget (although does have some good lighting) so that is why they are portraying some of the problem actresses face, but just in one location. 6 just to put in perspective Catherine Tate was one of the doctors companions and was slated for not looking the part, there is an example of this bias in real life, from someone who is in the video itself.
@MemeSupremeCookiesNCream6 жыл бұрын
It’s not satire in the traditional way. It’s satire trying to make a point that the wahmens are always second fiddle to men
@Alex-cw3rz6 жыл бұрын
J KERLS I'd say it's bog standard satire, and it isn't just that they play second fiddle to men, it is mainly about the high asthetic standards women have to face (not saying men don't) and also the fact the character is just there to look pretty rather than do anything useful. And again obviously this is not all the time on every production, but systematic.

@MikeKojoteStone6 жыл бұрын
1. that doesn't mean it's automatically good or gets a pass if the script falls short. Satire can be bad or even fail completely. This almost managed to fuck up, despite a great cast. Which is the fault of the script. 2. not to say that it was the sole message of the thing, but it does say that men don't get a similar treatment the moment a man steps in to read the part and immediately gets the job. A point emphasized by the posters at the end. So ... there it says that. 3. citation needed. Trustworthy, redundant sources or it's gonna be considered white noise. 4. obviously, yeah. But it's also an exaggeration that's taken to the absurd. And if you pack everything that's wrong with the industry into one skit, but then decide to make it exclusively about women, it's ... telling. Especially after so much was done to sensitize men like me to our status as natural born perpetrators of all things bad happening to womankind ... 5. I don't know about that. It either has enough budget to pay quite a few popular faces or they went along for the fun of it or the message. It has ONE major location that doesn't change nor does it need to. You can't get much cheaper than that. It's pretty much like every on-stage skit. Budget is NOT the problem of this, and if it was, it could have been solved by cutting one of the promiment people out of it and reusing the money saved. It clearly didn't really need the stars for the underlying message. 6. your point being? Her point being? THE point being? Are we really even talking about how fucked up the industry is? Sure, ten years ago I would've smiled lightly, because the skit wasn't completely terrible. But after a decade of vilainization I don't feel like smiling about it anymore. I can't reset myself to not seeing the injustice in what's shoved into my face day after day and I'm tired of being made the bad guy just by virtue of birth. So I want equal representation in skits about fucked up industry standards. Thank the femi-nazis who made over-representation of women a thing for it. Or the herd of mindless sheep who followed them blindly. THIS is the current climate and the people who still think THIS skit is something we all need are fully responsible for it. So your arguments are void.

Men; no one is saying you dont face your own patriarchal based prejudice - Tom hiddleston is a good-looking, in shape, posh guy, so, believe it or not, he's not being generalised as all men. If you recognise the problems that men face in terms of hypersexualisation in cinema how about instead of criticising a video that addresses it's use against women, you use that energy to go and make or contribute to a video or commentary addressing the systematic expectations from male actors. You might be surprised that the support you get will be the same people supporting this video. We can improve this world for all of us if we stop bitterly sniping at attempts for change or telling people to 'get over it' and instead work together in changing a societal view that effects us all. ♡
@aurayafrost62536 жыл бұрын
Throwing a rape comment and a movie star pay comment in the same sentence indicates your inability to separate those issues and instead lump them all together as a "Women can't be opressed" "argument". Chris Pratt was paid more than Bryce Dallas Howard for JW. 90% of adult rape victims in the US are female. Do you see how disconnected these two points are? You're using them as a shock factor when it's easy to do the same right back, resulting in nothing helpful at all. Men have their own stigmitisations, yes. Amazingly, humanity is shit and our history is based on genocide, war, oppression and treating people of different genders, sexual orientations, races and even feminine qualities as inferior, prejudices that are still ENGRAINED into every part of society and human behaviour. Open your mind, gain some perspective, stop using shock tactics to feel better about your criticisms. Donate to male rape support charities (1in6.org for example). Protest when their assaulters aren't prosecuted fairly. Demand the government support them. Do the same for female survivors. Make the video. Share the video. Help convince others. Then get back to me. Otherwise you don't really care. You just want to argue on the internet.

Tom was not even representing men in this. He was representing an obviously unqualified(being male) person who was given a part they shouldn’t have gotten because they were “perfect”. They obviously didn’t want to take an actress who is “ideal” and shame her in any way(the context of this would have made it uncomfortable) so they chose Tom, which just made the mood lighter because of the absurdity.

Rose Tico Enthusiast just because you’ve seen a few films with leading Asian characters doesn’t mean that there are plenty of opportunities for them apart from the same action karate films, the comic relief, the companion or the smart ass. The point is that all ethnicities should get equal opportunities in the film industry. Just because some have had the opportunity to lead, does not mean that opportunities are equal. Just compare the percentage of Asian lead movies with the percentage of movies lead by white people and you’ll see the point. Asians don’t need to be in every film, but they should have as much opportunity to lead as white people and same with all other ethnicities.

Very clever use of script (the line about being able to speak, the me too at the end) etc. but also I love how it shows that the problem stems from the industry; not an individual demographic. The message is rather clever; the use of Tom Hiddleston is particularly good. Of course the primary focus is the fact that he is male, but Tom Hiddleston is also a white, conventionally attractive man from a very privileged background. I question whether people who call this skit 'man-hating' really got it.

It adds even more of a layer when you know that Tom Hiddleston is very well known to be a strong feminist!

Love this!!! So accurate, and they also use it to showcase some really strong, talented actresses. Also really glad the BBC is paying more attention to how women are treated in the entertainment industry, especially after the trouble they've had with gender equality in the last 12 months or so - hopefully this is a sign that they're sorting it out!

Lo lo London XD So many amazing actors here! Catherine Tate, Emilia Clarke, Tom Hiddleston, Katie Leung, Lena Headey, Florence Pugh and Felicity Jones!!! To be honest I don't know the other ones. But this was comedy gold! I think they conveyed the message very well, I am an aspiring actress and to see the harsh cruelty and especially the racism is heartbreaking, to know what actors and actresses go through.
@perfectpeterpan6 жыл бұрын
Once I thought that this is what the actresses have to go through in real life, I started crying. That's not easy. We must respect and support them more instead of hating on them for their success which came as a result of being put through severe deprecation.

I love this SO much. Thank you all for putting together something so amazing, and the message was right on point. Females, not just in acting, but almost in every aspect of our society are treated as objects and dehumanised. This really shows people how unfair that is. And I know that the produces of this "short" really cared, because the put the hottest chick (the brunette) as one of the people interviewing. Brilliant! This isn't a repression by men of women, this isn't about the "ugly"s getting jealous, this is about the systemic sexism that keeps so many talented actresses from being able to fully explore characters and the full range of the human experience. Great job!
